Use this template only for files hosted on weather.gov and other NWS channels that were created by people other than NWS employees.
At different times, various regional offices of the National Weather Service have held contests or other public outreach exercises that have made release into the public domain a condition of participation. For example, the La Crosse,[1] Louisville,[2], Norman[3], Omaha[4], Peachtree City[5] and Sioux Falls[6] offices are known to have set such conditions in the past.
 | Read any such terms and conditions carefully; at least one of these (Omaha) contains one option which would place the file into the public domain and another option which would not. When evaluating terms and conditions, look out for language that precludes release into the public domain such as "gives permission", specifies a particular purpose for which the file may be re-used (eg "for lightning safety"), or requires attribution for re-use. Requiring attribution is itself not incompatible with a free licence, but is incompatible with release into the public domain. |

- files not hosted on weather.gov or other NWS channels

- files credited to the NWS on third-party websites such as news websites.
- files hosted on weather.gov or other NWS channels that are in the public domain because they were ineligible for copyright for some reason other than being the work of an NWS employee, or for which a third-party copyright has expired. Choose another tag that more specifically expresses why the file is in the public domain, for example {{PD-ineligible}}, {{PD-automated}}, {{PD-US-no notice}}, or {{PD-US-expired}}.
