TVB to broadcast Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) today announced that it will be the official broadcaster in Hong Kong for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016 in Brazil and the Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014 in Nanjing, China.

TVB has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights across all media platforms, including free television, pay television, internet and mobile.

After the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Russia this February, TVB will once again be the official broadcaster in Hong Kong for the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games.  It will be held in Rio de Janeiro on 5 to 21 August in 2016, the first time that the world’s largest sports event takes place in South America.

More than 10,500 athletes from over 200 nations will compete in 29 sports, including diving, gymnastics, table tennis, volleyball, badminton, athletics and swimming, which are very popular among Hong Kong audience.  For the first time, rugby sevens and golf have been approved as new sports in Rio 2016.

“We have endeavoured to bring to Hong Kong viewers the major international sports events, such as the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil,” Mr Mark Lee, TVB Group General Manager said.  “Our aim is to ensure that as many people as possible are able to watch these popular sports events on all TVB platforms.”

“We will broadcast live and daily highlights on our free TV channels more than 400 hours of high viewer interest events of Rio 2016.  All television broadcasts will be in high definition.”

In less than three months, the eyes of the world will be on the city of Nanjing for the opening of the second Summer Youth Olympic Games.  The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games will be held on 16 to 28 August this year.  Created by IOC in 2007, it is a youth version of the Olympic Games held every four years for athletes aged 15 to 18 from around the world.  Held for the first time in China, it will feature 28 sports including badminton, table tennis, diving, gymnastics, weightlifting and shooting which young Chinese athletes will stand a very good chance of claiming victories in front of a home crowd.
