The Sculpted Word is a complete survey of anthropomorphic stone statues (gowe) from the northern region of Nias in Indonesia that date from the 17th century onwards. This book examines the origins and the cultural significance of the gowe in the context of the heritage of Nias, as well as the architectural and sculptural aspects of their construction. Results from our anthropological study suggest that this unique cultural resource is under threat from theft, sale, and erosion, and we therefore, provide a unique dataset in which these statues are recorded for the people of Nias and further research. Further qualitative contextual information has been collected through interviews with the current inhabitants of Nias which has highlighted the survival of a significant oral tradition.
