The Toronto International Film Festival — which I have been attending since 2007, and from which I just returned — has long been an important launching pad for Oscar contenders, from 1981’s Chariots of Fire to 1999’s American Beauty to 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire to 2018’s Green Book. But a few years ago, that status was jeopardized when the fest grew resentful of the fact that a number of films that it was advertising as “world premieres” or “North American premieres” were, in fact, first sneak-screening at the Telluride Film Festival, which takes place a few days before it does.
Even though virtually no TIFF attendee would have balked at seeing a film that had previously screened for a relatively small number of people in a remote town in the Rockies, TIFF decided to adopt a hard-line position: it told film makers and backers that if they showed their film somewhere else in North America before TIFF,...

“The Life of Chuck,” director Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation starring Tom Hiddleston, has won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF organizers announced at an awards ceremony on Sunday.
In TheWrap’s review of the film, Chase Hutchinson called it “less of a horror film than it is an existential grappling with the end — while also being a jubilant celebration of the moments that make life worth living along the way. It’s Flanagan’s vibrant equivalent of Charlie Kaufman’s ‘Synecdoche, New York’ that finds hope and meaning in his own way just as it is one of the best modern Stephen King adaptations one could hope for.”
Unlike festivals like Cannes, Berlin, Sundance and Venice, Toronto does not give out a jury award to the festival’s top film. Instead, viewers at all public screenings are invited to vote for their...

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2024 Toronto Film Festival has gone to The Life of Chuck, first runner-up is Emilia Pérez, and second runner-up is Anora. The Documentary Award goes to The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, and the Midnight Madness winner is The Substance.
Both runners-up Emilia Pérez and Anora were big winners at Cannes in May (the latter taking the Palme d’Or), but Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck was a TIFF world premiere and a surprise winner of this award.
Tom Hiddleston stars in the film based on King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. It is an unusual winner here for this award as it currently is looking for distribution and has no set release date, which means it could be the first People’s Choice winner in recent memory...

About two and a half hours into King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Aug. 16 show — the first of two nights at the 13,000-capacity Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York — bandleader Stu Mackenzie realized they were going to come up short on their three-hour set. “We didn’t put enough songs on the set list,” he recalls. “That doesn’t usually happen to us. Hollywood big-budget tentpoles get ready, Armando Iaunucci is coming for you.
The Veep and Avenue 5 creator/writer teamed up with Succession and Veep writer Jon Brown and the pair have crash-landed from the worlds of media, politics and outer space onto a superhero movie set for the satirical series, The Franchise, which has now dropped a teaser trailer.
Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) is director and executive producer along with Iaunucci (The Thick Of It, The Death Of Stalin) and Brown, with Brown as showrunner.
“Everything’s exploding at a million miles an hour, and the movie is a scrotum resting on a razor’s edge,” says Himesh Patel to set the tone in the footage. Patel is playing the director an unloved franchise movie “fighting for its place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe.”

‘The Franchise,’ Superhero Comedy From ‘Veep’ Creator Armando Iannucci, Drops First Stressful Teaser
If you thought Marvel movies were stressful, you ain’t seen nothing yet. HBO dropped the first teaser for “The Franchise,” the premium cable network’s upcoming high-pressure comedy about creating a superhero franchise in Hollywood. The series will premiere on Oct. 6.
The upcoming show comes from Armando Iannucci, best known for creating “Veep” and “The Thick of It,” as well as Sam Mendes and Jon Brown.
“Just another 83 days, and then we’re done,” Himesh Patel as Daniel says in the teaser while rushing down a hall with people filing after him. “I’d savor every moment.”
As is typically the case with Iannucci’s work, it’s difficult to know how much of that statement is rooted in truth and how much is sarcasm thinly masking an impending mental breakdown. That manic tone continues throughout the teaser as characters call this movie everything from “a scrotum resting on...

Can Tom Cruise, who has spent the last decade dominating the box office with explosive hits like the Mission: Impossible series and Top Gun: Maverick, finally snag that elusive Oscar? The odds are looking better than ever, thanks to a new film venture under the acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñárritu—the genius who steered Leonardo DiCaprio to his first ‘Best Actor’ Oscar for The Revenant after five previous nominations.

Recent reports suggest that the cast for Iñárritu’s next cinematic escapade reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
The screenplay, a brainchild of Iñárritu along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, tells the tale of a man with untold power who’s caused a colossal mess but must convince humanity that he’s their knight in shining armor.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Nicole Kidman squat-piss on Zac Efron’s jellyfish sting, or eye-fuck John Cusack from across the room of a no-contact death row prison visit, or Efron dancing to Linda Clifford’s “I Just Wanna Wanna” in clinging tighty-whities in the rain. All of this and more happens in Lee Daniels’ sweaty, swampy Southern Gothic “The Paperboy,” the writer/director’s 2012 follow-up to his Oscar-winning sensation “Precious.” It’s a movie, as Daniels told IndieWire, that “doesn’t get any love.”
Set in 1969, this delirious entertainment follows Matthew McConaughey as a Florida reporter covering inmate Hillary Van Wetter (Cusack), who has been convicted of killing a racist cop. McConaughey hires his brother Jack (Efron) to probe Hillary’s possible innocence. Efron is seduced by the vamping, sex-mad blonde Charlotte Bless (Kidman), a southern-friend Alabama belle in love with Hillary from afar. Violence, madness,...

On a humid and muggy evening in New York City’s Soho neighborhood, filmmaker and genre maestro M. Night Shyamalan seems particularly giddy while standing in front of a room of assorted press. A major reason is probably that tonight is also the birthday of his leading man and collaborator, Josh Hartnett. The pair apparently have plans for a nice dinner upstairs. However, he also seems genuinely curious to see what a group of journalists are going to think about his and Hartnett’s latest movie, Trap—a serial killer thriller told from the point-of-view of the killer.
According to Shyamalan, it felt just like the type of movies he and his contemporaries made in the 1990s, although we can attest there has never quite been a serial killer movie like this. Not only is Hartnett’s deceptively affable Cooper a predatory wolf in sheep’s clothing, but he’s...

The luxurious waterfront home of acclaimed actor Kevin Spacey in Baltimore has been sold at a public auction for $3.24 million.
The sale was concluded on the steps of the Baltimore Circuit Court, marking the end of an era for this iconic property.
The massive 9,000-square-foot Harborview estate, previously marketed as a “magnificent mansion on the water,” was snapped up in under 10 minutes by a Maryland developer, Sam Sheibani from Compass, who acted as the winning bidder. The transaction required a $100,000 deposit from the successful purchaser.

The explosive body horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, directed by French heatseeker Coralie Fargeat, has been set to open the Midnight Madness section at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
“Substance” follows Elizabeth Sparkle (Moore), an Oscar winner who commits the high crime of aging in Hollywood. Relegated to a morning fitness show, Sparkle’s world closes in on her when opportunities dry up — until a mysterious stranger offers her the titular substance, a chance at a more perfect version of herself. Sparing any spoilers, Qualley comes into play as the idealized version of Moore. The pair learns that coexisting ain’t easy in Fargeat’s violent fantasia.
Also on the lineup, veteran music video and film director Joseph Kahn will show “Ick,” a tribute to ‘80s creature features starring former TV Superman Brandon Routh and “American Beauty” actor Mena Suvari.

It’s nearly been a year since Kevin Spacey was acquitted of all nine sexual offense charges in a U.K. criminal trial, and the two-time Oscar winner has publicly admitted that his career is still in the doldrums.
The two solitary projects of his that have released in the last 12 months — “Control” and “Peter Five Eight,” both low-budget indie features and far removed from the starry features he was leading before his glittering four-decade career imploded when allegations first emerged in 2017 — landed without much noise. In a tearful interview on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” in June, he claimed that he owed so “many millions” of dollars in legal fees that his house in the U.S had been foreclosed and he’d almost had to file for bankruptcy several times.
But while he may still be the highest profile actor effectively “canceled” by mainstream Hollywood in the wake of the #MeToo movement,...

Kevin Spacey is set to be honored with a trophy for a voice role in the 2023 U.K. action thriller Control by the Folkestone Independent Film Awards on July 20.
On Monday, organizers of the British indie film awards confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the House of Cards star is set to win a best performance trophy for his role in Control. The British action thriller, written and directed by Gene Fallaize, did not have Spacey on screen, but rather the two-time Oscar winner instead had a voice role with a menacing presence in the film.
The British indie film awards event also touted Spacey’s performance and award on its Instagram and Facebook pages. The producers of Control cast Spacey in late 2022 as he awaited his London criminal trial over multiple counts of sexual assault. The British legal proceeding ended with the embattled Hollywood actor cleared of all charges.

Chris Cooper is an Oscar-winning actor who has brought his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. Let’s take a look back at 17 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).
He hit the Oscar jackpot with his supporting turn in Spike Jonze‘s “Adaptation” (2002), a self-reflective comedy about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman‘s (Nicolas Cage) struggles to adapt Susan Orlean‘s (Meryl Streep) nonfiction book “The Orchid Thief.” Cooper played John Laroche, the eccentric, swampy horticulturalist at the center of Orlean’s story.

Jake Gyllenhaal learned the biggest lesson of his acting career during a scene in which he thought he was nailing it. He starred in the 1999 family drama movie October Sky alongside veteran actor Chris Cooper, who was responsible for instilling in him the true essence of acting.

In the world of Yellowstone, problems get solved by guns and the cunning minds of those in power. The real world, on the other hand, is hardly as entertaining as Taylor Sheridan’s universe. Wes Bentley could vouch for that fact on account of the addiction-related struggles of his past and his friendship with a ubiquitously loved star that ended much too soon in tragedy.
Wes Bentley and Kelly Reilly in Yellowstone [Credit: Paramount Network]In the years since Bentley won his battle against addiction, the actor has helped shed light on the subject multiple times in numerous interviews. More importantly, however, he has never forgotten the people who helped push him across the line to sobriety, one of them being the Oscar-winning DC star, Heath Ledger.

New York – The 23rd annual Tribeca Festival, presented by Okx, today announced the winners in its competition categories at an awards ceremony at Racket NYC. The top honors went to “Griffin in Summer” for the Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, “Bikechess” for Best International Narrative Feature, and “Hacking Hate” for Best Documentary Feature.
“Griffin in Summer” (Dir: Nicolas Colia) involves 14-year-old Griffin Nafly, who during summer vacations gets down to the serious business of putting on his dramatic new play … an ambitious cross between “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” and “American Beauty.” However, when his tween collaborators get distracted by more trivial pursuits like boys and camp, Griffin’s attention drifts toward Brad, the zoned-out handyman working at his house.

Kevin Spacey recently appeared on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored program where he broke down into tears as he recalled the support he received from Elton John and David Furnish. Kevin Spacey, a name once synonymous with phenomenal talent & award-winning performances, continues to command our attention despite the shadow cast by allegations of s*xual impropriety that emerged in 2017.
But as we reflect on his career, punctuated by two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA, it’s remarkable to witness Spacey’s resilience in the face of adversity. Despite his significantly diminished net worth and the industry’s overall disinterest in him, the actor is still making headlines, but not for the reasons you may expect.

Spacey is facing an enhanced number of allegations of s*xual assault related to alleged incidents that took place between 2005 and 2013. His net worth has dropped by tens of millions of dollars in those years, even though he has kept working despite his cancellation.

“I have nothing to hide and I want to live a more open life than the one that I did,” said Kevin Spacey in his first lengthy interview since winning most of the sexual misconduct suits against him over the past several years. (The actor did have a much shorter conversation with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo last month.)
Today’s hour-plus interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored covered not just the allegations against him, but the two time Oscar winner’s mental state, his sexuality, his childhood and his much-impacted finances.
Spacey choked up as he said his home in Baltimore is in foreclosure and would be auctioned at a fire sale.
“I’m not quite sure where I’m going to live now,” said Spacey, who also maintains that he is broke and still owes millions in legal fees.

Over two decades after its initial release, "Six Feet Under" is a uniquely of-its-time television show. The series about a family-owned funeral home and the dysfunctional constellation of people whose lives are shaped by it is often as emotional and riveting now as it was upon release, but it's also aged in interesting key ways. With "American Beauty" scribe Alan Ball and future "Transparent" creator Joey Soloway working behind the scenes, the series also builds in space for existential contemplation, playful and shocking transgression, and mistakes. Lots and lots of mistakes.
As the show wears on, how frequently — and how believably — the Fisher family screws up is at times directly correlated to how well the show's story succeeds. The writers of "Six Feet Under" put their characters through the wringer again and again in a move that makes the series' weakest seasons feel redundant, while its high points mine the mess-ups for heartfelt emotion,...

Sam Mendes is undoubtedly one of the best filmmakers of our times. Among his many hit films are American Beauty (1999), which earned him the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Director, then Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), the James Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), and the critically acclaimed war film 1917 (2019). He also made Empire of Light in 2022 but has not been active since. Yet, earlier this year, it was reported that Mendes was working on an ambitious four-film project related to arguably the best band ever – The Beatles!
Mandes is working on four individual biopics, each dedicated to one member of the famous group – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. All four movies are currently planned for a 2027 release, which demonstrates just how big this project is. But this is old news. What we have for you here is some important casting information,...

Despite the Fab Four’s massive popularity, Beatlemania wasn’t of much interest for filmmakers for a long time. As for large movie projects about this group, fans have only seen Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Nowhere Boy (2009) about John Lennon’s teenage years.
This February every Beatles fan was blown away by the news that Sam Mendes will install the Beatles Cinematic Universe that will include four movies, each told from the perspective of every band member.
More than that, it has been recently reported that the director has already cast the Fab Four actors, and at first glance it seems to be a fan cast.
The biopics will assemble Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw) as John Lennon, Paul Mescal (Normal People) as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) as Ringo Starr and Charlie Rowe (Red Band Society) as George Harrison.

Griffin Nafly (Everett Blunck) is not like other 14-year-olds. Consider his contribution to his school’s end-of-the-year talent show: a snippet of his latest play in which he reads for both lead roles, a disaffected stockbroker and his drunk wife, as they scream and carry on about everything from infidelity to abortions. While everyone else is happy with pop song duets, it’s Griffin — too old for his years, too young to really break free — who wants to bring some actual art to the suburban stage.
And while that might all be Ok, even kinda fun, the real problem isn’t just that Griffin isn’t like most other 14-year-olds, it’s that he’s not even really like his closest friends either. While his childhood pals, including “Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret” breakout Abbie Ryder Fortson as his long-suffering second-in-command Kara, are moving into classic young adulthood — finding handsy boyfriends,...

Maybe the Matrix can’t tell you who you are but Carrie-Anne Moss can tell you the impact it had. It’s kind of hard to believe that The Matrix came out 25 years ago, redefining special effects and bringing action flicks into the 21st century both visually and narratively. The sequels didn’t get close to living up to the original but the 1999 film remains a truly groundbreaking essential.
A quarter-century after it became one of the biggest pop culture topics in the world, Carrie-Anne Moss – who played Trinity to Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus – reflected on the legacy of The Matrix, saying, “It was such a unique film at that time. I’d love to pick it apart a little bit more now that I have a bit more wisdom behind me. But I don’t really think about it. I mean, I will see things and think,...

Takashi Miike’s operatically over-the-top new film concerns a serial killer but who needs a plot with all this trademark violence, alienation and nihilism?
The vintage year of 1999 has been back in the critical conversation recently for its quarter-centenary; it was the year of The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty – and there can hardly have been more brilliant and more disturbing film of that time than Takashi Miike’s demonically inspired horror-satire Audition, a nightmarishly violent parable of sexual politics and national malaise which launched his reputation in the west as a master of the macabre and the extreme.
Perhaps Miike has never quite equalled that hideous display of cruelty and fear, or perhaps it is truer to say he never again brought these things into such a sharp dramatic focus. But he certainly has kept up an extraordinary productivity and his latest movie – unveiled at last...

The movie that launched a million memes has lost none of its conspiratorial power, and its action sequences still dazzle – but was it actually trying to tell us something we’ve all missed?
To paraphrase Apu in The Simpsons, this was the year filmgoers were partying like it was on sale for $19.99; it offered the vintage of American Beauty, Fight Club, The Sixth Sense and more. But The Matrix seemed to me then – and seems to me now – more exciting than any of them, first among equals in the previous century’s final graduating class. Rereleased for its 25th anniversary, this barnstorming sci-fi paranoia thriller, produced by action veteran Joel Silver and written and directed by the Wachowskis, holds up tremendously well. The martial arts sequences choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping are gripping and nothing about the bullet-time effects or production design feels dated. More of AMC's extensive Anne Rice Universe is on the way. During the latest episode of Interview with the Vampire season 2, AMC released a brief teaser for the upcoming sophomore season of its other notable Rice series, Mayfair Witches, based on the Lives of the Mayfair Witches book series.

As you can see, the clip is only 15 seconds long and just includes a few little quotes like, "the legacy continues," and "embrace the darkness."
Some spoilers ahead for the end of Mayfair Witches season 1.

What does an abundantly talented woman have to do to get an Oscar around here? Annette Bening is 0-5 when it comes to winning an Academy Award in the acting categories. If it were up to her fans, there would a law in place that would put an end to this insanity. She might not always choose well when it comes to picking projects – if you haven’t seen 2000’s “What Planet Are You From?,” consider yourself lucky. Of course, it was probably criminal that her performance in 2016’s “20th Century Women” didn’t make more of an impact.
Bening was born on May 29, 1958, and married actor, producer, writer and director Warren Beatty after co-starring in “Bugsy.” Let’s look back at her three-decade career on the big screen, with 13 of her greatest films in our photo gallery, including “Nyad,” “The American President,” “The Grifters,” “The Kids Are All Right” and “American Beauty,...

Production on the “forensic” documentary Spacey Unmasked, diving into the allegations of sexual misconduct that have toppled Kevin Spacey’s career, started before his U.K. trial had been announced that same May — it even put a “brake” on things, Haywood reveals, as Channel 4 had to wait until after a verdict was reached. He was later acquitted of nine charges brought against him in London in July 2023, but Haywood and her team had found others, uninvolved in the trial, who wanted to tell their stories, too.
“I set out to talk to as many people as I could and understand what the story is,” Haywood tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I tried to contact men and women,...

Spacey’s legal team was in court today responding to a judgement in favor of Spacey’s accuser after it failed to file his defense in time. Spacey was not present. According to Reuters, Adam Speker, a lawyer representing Spacey, said it was a “genuine error” by the actor’s legal team from the prominent British law firm Carter-Ruck.
