COM:DW of copyrighted artwork on the pieces. Maybe fine in Japan per their COM:TOYS exception but highly doubtful it is ok in the US. Majora (talk) 22:41, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. I originally asked about this at Commons:Village pump/Copyright/Archive/2019/09#File:Shogi-Set-12.JPG, but never got a response; so, I asked Majora to take a look. My concern is the same in that this is a COM:DW, which means there are two copyrights that need to be taken into account. The uploader/photographer can release their photo under a free license, but only if the piece imagery itself is either (1) ineligible for copyright protection or (2) released under a free-license that Commons excepts. I don't think (1) can be argued since the piece imagery seems to complex per both COM:TOO US and COM:TOO Japan to be {{PD-ineligible}} or {{PD-shape}}, etc. The game en:Dōbutsu shōgi seems to have been developed around 2007, so it's not too old to be eligible for copyright protection. There's no indication that can be found on the game developer's websites that the game imagery has been released per COM:L. Moreover, COM:TOYS seems to imply that even though the game might be considered utilitarian in Japan, it most likely wouldn't be in the United States which is where the Commons servers are located. There are other similar images in Category:Nekomado Shogi sets which should also be assessed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:03, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
