| Description |
The telecommunications tower on the right in northern England is 1,084-foot-tall (330.4 m) and is mainly made of reinforced concrete. It was built in 1961-1971 and it was then the third-tallest freestanding structure in Europe. It's still the tallest freestanding structure in Britain. Compare the height to the farm buildings on the hill. The tower replaced a lattice tower that fell down in the winter of 1969 when accumulation of ice and strong winds caused it to collapse. The tower of the left was constructed in 2018 and is only going to be there for about 4 years whilst alterations & upgrades are made to the older iconic tower. The temporary tower is actually shorter than the older one but an optical illusion makes it look taller. (Apologies that the picture quality is not very good - as it was taken from a moving car.) |
