Title
S-shaped Brooch
Description
English: A near complete cast copper alloy S-shaped brooch of Early-Medieval date, dating to the fifth or sixth century (probably c. 450-550 AD).

Description: The brooch is of plate type and is narrowed S-shape in plan. Each terminal is bifurcated slightly possibly in imitation of a bird beak, a common motif of such brooches. It has further decoration in the form of two transverse incised lines diagonally top to bottom, each side of which are a line of ring and and annulets top to bottom also. There are additional ring and annulets incised into the terminal/heads.The reverse is undecorated although the pin lug and catchplate remain in situ with the iron pin remaining in a heavily corroded state across the back. Some abrasion has occurred particularly around the terminals but otherwise it remains in good condition. It has a dark green patination apart from the abrasion which has verdi gris and the corroded pin which is dark brown

Measurements: 32.58mm long, 11.92mm wide, 6.60mm thick (including lug, plate is 1.46mm front plate) and 3.84g in weight.
