Text Appearing Before Image:
work is to question the artistic wisdomof putting so much beautiful work, on such a smallscale,—for the delicate drawing and finish of thework is wonderful,—in a position in which it wasinvisible to the ordinary observer below. PerhapsJohn Thornton did not realize how small his panelswould look,—panels three and a half feet squareseem a fair size when you are working at them,—and no doubt access to the galleries was freer thenthan now; but a thirteenth century artist wouldnot have made the mistake.^ Yet the architectural effect of the whole is little,if at all, the worse for it. The smallness of thepanels only increases ones sense of the size of thewindow and gives the glass a jewel-Hke quality. It is all a twinkle of beautiful colour. Neitherhave the repairs effected by the eighteenth century ^ Perhaps it is unfair to blame Thornton, for in the contract heundertakes to work secundum ordiuationem Decani et Capituli. Text Appearing After Image:
FIFTEENTH CENTURY GLASS AT YORK 233 glaziers hurt it much—pieces of clear colouredglass put in to fill up holes, and on which theglazier has usually scratched his name and the datewith his diamond. Rather, I think, these tinytouches of pure colour (for they used quite a goodblue) add to it and give it a quality. What does detract from its beauty is the dirtyquarry glazing which has been put outside it toprotect it. Beautiful as the window still is, quitea third of its beauty of light and colour has beensacrificed by this means. There is some glass in the Lady Chapel which A transi-seems older than the east window. I have ^ytudowalready alluded to the third window from theeast in the south aisle which represents a stageof development corresponding to the earlier workof the Winchester School in the west window ofWinchester Cathedral and the east windows ofNew College antechapel. The three lights containthree figures, St. Edward the Confessor betweenSt. James and St. John the Evangelis
