El Príncipe is a Spanish TV series of drama and suspense created by Aitor Gabilondo and César Benítez for Telecinco. The series, produced by Mediaset Spain in collaboration with Plano a Plano, is aimed at a young audience and tells a love story between a Christian policeman from the Iberian peninsula and the young Muslim sister of a drug trafficker. Most of the stories are set in the troubled El Principe Alfonso neighborhood of Ceuta, near the border with Morocco.

The series debuted on February 4, 2014 in Spain with a multichannel broadcast that gave high viewing rates. On its launch it obtained 21.9% viewing rate (27.7% in multichannel) and was leader in all its broadcasts during the first season.

History

The project's history goes back to October 27, 2011, when the company Mediaset Spain Communication announced they had in mind a new project in which the main theme would be based on the detective genre. The statement further explained that the format will be set in the fight against drug traffic; its plot revolves around the presence of a policeman stationed in Ceuta who tries to fight drug trafficking between Spain and Africa, and chases a Moroccan leader whose younger sister falls in love with him. It was also reported that the main character of the serie would be the actor José Coronado, who had worked in the film No habrá paz para los malvados in Trinidad Santos role as police inspector, film produced by the communication group that harvested a great in blockbuster.

Plot

In the troubled neighborhood of El Principe, Fran, a veteran police officer, he doesn't doubt in enforcing order using aggressive methods. This seems to be in danger with the arrival of Morey, a CNI agent uses the police station as a cover to investigate an alleged police collaboration with a jihadist network. Their situation is complicated in the beginning knows Fatima, an idealistic Muslim teacher who is looking for his teenage brother, Abdu, who supposedly died some time ago, and she is against the criminal activities of his other brother, Faruq, one of the biggest drug dealers in the neighborhood. However, Faruq is not the villain of the story. Then everything gets complicated when they recognize a terrorist band called Akrab, which recruits teenagers to frighten the city. Meanwhile, Morey offers Fátima to go to the peninsula with him, but, being on the way, his brother 'Abdu' returns to Ceuta with a bomb in a tour bus . In the end, the police discover his plan and try to stop him; they avoid the bus explosion, but Abdu gets shot in the head by Morey. This consecuently offers a second season with an impossible love between Morey and Fatima because he has killed his brother.

Production

The serie is entirely produced by Plano a Plano, under the direction of Aitor Gabilondo and Cesar Benitez as creators, executive producers and writers, who had worked for the chain with series like Periodistas o El comisario. Moreover, fiction didn't consist of a defined ending in June 2014 as both production chain agreed an outcome in the second season of 16 chapters divided into eight each one. Note that the episodes are shot entirely in natural settings (Ceuta, Granada, Madrid and Malta) and then, the scenes are exposed to an edition process. As for the system of writing, they first thought of the ending and then start working on that chapter, working up to the top. Moreover, one of the biggest attractions of the plot is the process of postproduction. The US company Stargate Studios is responsible for the creation and oversight of special features by using Virtual technology Backlot. Meanwhile, Aitor Gabilondo, executive producer of the series, he argued at the press presentation in May 2013 that they would like to shot some scenes in Madrid, but will be recreated through visual effects in Ceuta.

Filming The 13th of May, 2013 the crew began the filmig of the series in the city of Ceuta. Most scenes were not shot in el Principe but in other neighborhoods of the city or Madrid. In its second and final part of fiction episodes they will, likewise, make use of the digital system; in addition, some filming is taking place for real in the cities of Valletta and Granada. This season Filming began on the 9th of June, 2014.

Disputes

Several voices have denounced the distortion of the image of Ceuta and stigma that will mean the series for the city, specifically to the neighborhood of el Principe, by the distorted images that show the series on the reality of the city. The president of the neighborhood refused that the police use to turn a blind eye as reflected in the series. It is also doubted that the Prince was the most dangerous slum in Spain, as promoted in the series respect to other places like Las 3000 Viviendas en Sevilla.

Episodes and audience

The first episode was seen by over 4.4 million viewers and 21.9% audience share, what became the most-watched premiere of any Telecinco television series since the start of Aida in January 2005.Its emission every Tuesday night established the serie as the most viewed show on that time and Tuesday was selected the best hearing program day. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the first episode of fiction was aired on a simulcast in six of the channels (Telecinco, Factoría de Ficción, Divinity, Energy, LaSiete and Nueve) operated by Mediaset España, which allowed the series to raise the overall average 27.7% to 5.6 million.
