Although racialism is most often used synonymously with racism, the term is also often found within white separatist literature, indicating a usage and concern with the relevance of race to various social issues. It is used in contrast to racism, because the claim is that separatists do not believe themselves superior to other races, or hate other races - they merely believe that race does matter.

Critics of white separatism say that there is no difference in application, and that separatists are in fact white supremacists, and that racialism is nothing more than a thinly veiled racism.
