Eddie Bravo (born Edgar Cano May 15, 1970) is an American practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who holds a second degree black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado. He is most famous for his win as a brown belt against Royler Gracie by triangle choke in the 2003 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling championships and his particular style of no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, called 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. He is also known for his mixed martial arts commentating on the Ultimate Fighting Championship and music composition. In an interview he advocated marijuana as performance enhancer.[2][3] He lives in Hollywood, California, where he runs his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school out of Legends MMA.

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu

10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is an unorthodox style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu developed by Eddie Bravo, the characteristics that distinguish it from traditional grappling are its strong focus on alternative and unconventional techniques, while largely training without the use of a gi. Victory Belt Publishing released two manuals covering techniques of the 10th Planet system, one in 2006[1] and a second in 2007[2]. The first covered aspects of the signature guard of the system, the rubber guard, while the second tackled aspects of the Twister, another integral position in the system. The books were written by Eddie Bravo, Glen Cordoza, and Erich Krauss. Bravo created this no-gi style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after defeating Royler Gracie via triangle choke in the ADCC 2003[3]. 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu focuses on constant pressure from unorthodox positions such as the Rubber guard, Twister Side Control , Monkey Mount (Gangsta Lean) and the half-guard position known as the "Lock Down".[4] The main premise behind 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is that the art should keep evolving, finding new ways to attack and counter. Bravo believes that standard Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become boring and predictable.

Instructional Manuals

Eddie Bravo has released several Instructional Manuals since defeating Royler:

  • Jiu Jitsu Unleashed (2005)
  • Mastering the Rubber Guard (2006)
  • Mastering the Twister (2007)
  • Advanced Rubber Guard (2011)

Chan Sung Jung

At UFC Fight Night 24, Chan Sung Jung, aka "the Korean Zombie" forced Leonard Garcia to tap to a spine lock called "the twister", the lock is also known in amateur wrestling as a "guillotine", not to be confused with the guillotine choke which is used widely in MMA. It was the first time the submission had been used to finish a fight in UFC history. He talked about the move after the fight, "It's something I saw a long time ago on the Internet on video," Jung said. "It's one of Eddie Bravo's moves. It's something I practiced because it looks fun and I do it quite a bit in practice. I have always told people I was going to try it sometime in competition. I wanted to do it in the UFC and I was able to, finally."[4]
