Pathaan is scheduled to be released in India on January 25, 2023, coinciding with Indian Republic Day weekend along with dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu.[2][3] The film will mark Shah Rukh Khan's return to the silver screen after his 2018 film Zero.[4]

Development

Yash Raj Films, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham officially announced Pathaan on 2 March 2022 at their social media accounts, revealing the release date of 25 January 2023 with a first look teaser.[5] It was previously teased by other cast members, including Salman Khan and Vishal Dadlani, on various occasions before. Dadlani announced the film on Twitter, stating, "No number from the past matters, no number in the future is too big. The whole world is waiting [for] Shahrukh. More importantly, we're all working [on] a kickass film with great songs."[6] This film is YRF's first Dolby Cinema release and the first Bollywood film to be shot with IMAX cameras.[citation needed]

Casting

Khan was cast in the film in September 2020.[7] Padukone joined production that November,[8][9][10] while Abraham rounded out the main cast in June, joining filming in Mumbai.[11][12] Dimple Kapadia was cast in December 2020.[13][14] Salman Khan was confirmed to make a cameo appearance in November 2020, reprising his role as Avinash Singh Rathore from the Tiger franchise.[15][16] Hrithik Roshan is also set to make a cameo, reprising his role as Kabir Dhaliwal from War (2019).

Filming

Principal photography of the film began on 17 November 2020 in Mumbai.[17][18] In January 2021, filming moved to Dubai. Some of the major action sequences including a long chase sequence were shot in the same schedule.[19][20] On 12 April 2021, after some crew members of the film tested positive for COVID-19, further schedules of the film were postponed.[21] The filming resumed on 25 June 2021.[22][23][24] Later, in July 2021, another schedule of the film began.[25] A song was scheduled to be shot from 7 October 2021 in Mallorca and Cádiz,[26][27] but the schedule was postponed.[28]

In February 2022, production moved to Spain to shoot action sequences including Khan, Padukone, and Abraham.[29] Filming then took place in Mallorca and Cádiz.[30] The Spain schedule was completed in March 2022, with the Mumbai schedule completed in Yash Raj Studios as the film wrapped. In October 2022, reshoots and additional scenes were completed. The film was shot in multiple locations across India, Afghanistan, Spain, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Italy and France.[31][32]

Music

The film's music was composed by Vishal–Shekhar, marking their seventh full-length film collaboration with Anand, after Salaam Namaste (2005), Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Anjaana Anjaani (2010), Bang Bang! (2014), and War (2019). This will mark their fifth collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, after Om Shanti Om, Ra.One, Chennai Express, and Happy New Year.[33]

Vishal-Shekhar reunited with producer Meghdeep Bose, after previously collaborating on Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), on the film's music arrangement and production.[34] Pathaan's score was composed by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara, marking their second collaboration with Anand, after War. Julius Packiam will additionally be a guest background score composer for his reuse of the Tiger themes for Salman Khan’s cameo as Tiger.

Marketing

The teaser of the film was released on 2 November 2022, coinciding with Shah Rukh Khan's 57th birthday.[35]

Release

Pathaan is scheduled to be theatrically released, in standard and IMAX versions, in India on 25 January 2023, coinciding with Indian Republic Day weekend along with dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu.[36][3]
