Shayne Hayne was born Kevin John Hayne in Wellington, NSW in 1967. His family moved to Muswellbrook in 1968.

As a child Shayne showed he was a gifted sportsman in a number of sports, however Rugby League proved to be his main destiny.

He played for the Muswellbrook Rams, up until 1993. In 1990 he set a National record for the most points scored in a season of 318 points, including 30 tries.[citation needed] He attracted a number of offers from clubs in Newcastle and Sydney, yet there was no guarantee of a steady income, so he stayed in Muswellbrook.

Shayne also had an interest in refereeing Rugby League.

At the age of 16, he had his Junior Schoolboys badge, and his Senior Badge at the age of 18. He soon became one of the top referees in Group 21, and upon invitation started to make the big time in the year 2000. He started doing the touch lines in NRL games during the 2000 season, traveling from Muswellbrook to Sydney twice a week.

His first grade debut came on March 10, 2001 at ANZ Stadium between West Tigers and Brisbane Broncos.

Since then, he has become one of the main referees in the game on a regular basis, including refereeing the 2007 City v Country game at Coffs Harbour.
