Salamis (Greek, Modern: Σαλαμίνα Salamína, Ancient/Katharevousa: Σαλαμίς Salamís) is the largest Greek island in the Saronic Gulf, about 1 nautical mile (2 km) off-coast from Piraeus. Paloukia Port is the main port, in size second only to Piraeus in Greece. The name Salamis is probably derived from Salam (chalam), meaning calm or peace, under which it was mentioned in Homer's writings. It also could have been named after Cychreus's mother (Cychreus was the first king of the island).

Salamis island is known for the Battle of Salamis, and is said to be the birthplace of Ajax and Euripides, the latter's birth being popularly placed on the day of the battle of Salamis. In modern times, it is home to a Greek naval base which serves as headquarters for the Greek navy. The harbor was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in 1941, sinking the Greek battleships Kilkis and Lemnos. The population boomed after World War II and the Greek Civil War but suburban housing came later in the 1970s. It boosted the urban area in the 1980s and the 1990s to the central and the western portions of the land and brought luxury housing to the north, the west and the south.

Salamis is homeland of many people of Art , Euripides ( tragedian ), Polychronos Lempesis (painter) , Dimitrios Mpogris ( playwright ) , Memos Mpegnis ( actor ) , all of these were and are eminent , celebrated , illustrious and famous Salaminians.

In Salamis, Angelos Sikelianos , the popular poet had his cottage across from the Monastery of Faneromeni . Also the politician , who is currently deputy of Greek Parliament and former actor , Giorgos Vasileiou has his permanent residence in the North of the island in the area Batsi.
