Bhind (Hindi-भिंड) Bhind district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is in the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. It is named after the mythological Hindu saint Vibhandak Rishi or Bhindi Rishi.

Geography

Bhind is located at 26°34′N 78°47′E / 26.56°N 78.79°E / 26.56; 78.79.[1] It has an average elevation of 143 metres (469 feet).

Bhind district is surrounded by Datia District(M.P.), Gwalior District(M.P.), Etawah District (U.P.) and Jalaun District (U.P.). The main activity of the people is Agriculture. Mustard and wheat are main crops of this district. Malanpur is the industrial area.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Bhind had a population of 153,768. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Bhind has high literacy rate of 89%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 76% and female literacy of 60%. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

  • The bandit Daku Man Singh and his son, Subedar Singh, were shot dead in an encounter in Bhind in 1955.
  • The bandit Gabbar Singh was killed in Bhind in 1965, based on which the super hit Hindi film Sholay was made in 1976.
  • Former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee also lived here for sometime.
  • it is also famous for dwarika peda house.
  • IPS academy is one of the best school in bhind.
  • The bandit nirbhay gurjar shot dead on 2006.

Misc.

VANKHANDESHWAR is ancient temple of lord shiva in bhind city where there are two lamps(deepak) established by prthvi raj chauhan in 12th century which are continuously lighting from then.Near this temple is a beautiful and great holy pond named gauri sarovar having a series of temples on its embankments.

BHINDIRISHI is another famous temple in the city situated nearby the fort and is the holy place of vibhandak rishi.
