Rutger Hauer missing

Sorry, I don't know how to fix this, but I noticed that Rutger Hauer is missing from the Dutch actors category page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Dutch_actors — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.5.240.122 (talk) 23:26, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He is in [[Category:Dutch film actors]] which is a subcategory of [[Category:Dutch actors]]. SpeakFree (talk) 16:29, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Word origin question

I'm wondering if anybody that speaks Dutch could comment on the origin of the name of a local creek called the Poesten Kill. Kill is obviously old Dutch for creek, but I have conflicting evidence regarding the first part of the name. One of the sources states that Poesten means "frothy", "foamy", or "bubbly" in old Dutch. (The other source says it comes from the name of a local farmer, which is probably more likely.) Can anyone comment on whether or not they're familiar with the word poesten meaning frothy (or anything else, for that matter) in Dutch? upstateNYer 23:01, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kill is indeed a old word, it isn't used anymore in the Dutch language and I don't know what Poesten means, I actually have never heard about it before, because there is no such word (in modern Dutch). Steppler 15:17, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply! upstateNYer 00:44, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Kil is still used in some geographic names e.g. Sluiskil and Dordtsche Kil. SpeakFree (talk) 16:34, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch knighthoods

A while back, somebody depopulated the Category:Dutch knights, removing baseball players Sidney Ponson, Calvin Maduro, and Gene Kingsale, all of whom have received the Order of Orange-Nassau, in the grade Knight. The edit summary said "A decoration is not a knighthood." Soon afterward, the Category:Dutch knights was deleted for being empty.

Can anyone clarify whether it is correct to refer to members of the Order of Orange-Nassau, in the grade Knight, as "Dutch knights"? Thanks. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 05:40, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes the order of O-N is a dutch knighhood. See Category:Orders of knighthood of the Netherlands
However I would not support creation of a category Dutch knights as there are thousands (if not tens of thousands) knights in the Netherlands (especially in the orders of Oranje-Nassau and the Netherlands Lion. Arnoutf (talk) 16:23, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Minor cleanup needed at Dutch Virgin Islands

I Google-Translated the article Dutch Virgin Islands from nl.wiki, but there were a few things that I couldn't quite clear up. A couple are marked with [clarification needed] tags, and one is shielded as hidden text (visible only when editing). I'd appreciate any help from Dutch speakers in fixing those last bits. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:13, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article nl:Senegambia (17e eeuw) seems notable (though not totally sure what to call it in English). It's short, but somehow the way it's written makes it nigh-incomprehensible in GoogleTranslate. If any Dutch speaker wants to take a stab at it, it may be worth having on en.wiki. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:46, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Matthew. I'm working on the translation and I've called the article Senegambia (Dutch West India Company). Feel free to change this if you consider it wise. Because English is not my native tongue it can't be expected that the translation will be perfect grammarwise. Needless to say that I welcome any improvements made. Cheers, --Antiphus (talk) 09:04, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to hear you're on it! I've redirected my term above to your new article. Just ping me if you'd like a native English speaker to do a cleanup at the end of your translation. MatthewVanitas (talk) 09:40, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Worth expanding Ruit van Bonjol?

Is Ruit van Bonjol worth expanding, or should I just go ahead with the deletion? There's a nl.wiki article and a nice pic, but is it worth having? Oh, and should I have a better English title? MatthewVanitas (talk) 07:45, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of Chinezenmoord?

I ran across this article on nl.wiki and gTranslated the lede to at least get a stub going. Also found a pic on Google and uploaded it. This seems like a really engaging topic, maybe worth translating more of the nl.wiki article? MatthewVanitas (talk) 09:42, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have had two battles regarding links from the English language Wikipedia to articles in the Dutch language Wikipedia. In both cases, other editors have attempted to revoke the links that I placed in the list of winners of the Elfstedentocht to the Dutch articles where, in my judgement, there would never be an English language article. Do members of this group have any comments?

BTW, I am half Dutch and half English by parentage, but having been taught Afrikaans at school will never have the ability to write in Dutch (though I can read it). Martinvl (talk) 20:21, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Links to Wikipedia articles on other language Wikipedias are allowed per WP:ILL. Naturally, should an article in English be written, the link should be amended to point at that article. Mjroots (talk) 08:32, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Translation help needed please

I'm currently working on a Dutch windmill article in my sandbox. In the mill is a poem by the mill's builder. As the mill was built in 1821 the poem is out of copyright by now, so I've quoted it in full. What I need help with is translating it into English. Is there any editor willing to assist with this? Help required from Dutch speakers

While updating the article on Lipke Holthuis, I came across a link to a photo of him, which I would like to include in that article. Could a Dutch speaker please confirm that "Het beeldmateriaal is rechtenvrij en in hoge resolutie te downloaden" does indeed mean that the images are available under a free license (presumably {{PD-author}}), and offer an opinion as to whether that applies to the photo of Prof. Holthuis, or merely to the images on the linked page. Thanks. --Stemonitis (talk) 08:15, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FYI - A massive discussion is taking place at a Request for comment (RfC) Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people. About 50k of articles are currently unreferenced and therefore in danger of deletion, some of those are on Dutch subjects. I have added the proper template on the main page to have a bot generate the cleanup list after some days (hopefully). The cleanup link in the title above (now a redlink) will then point to a list of unreferenced articles with the WikiProject Netherlands template on its talk page. Please revise articles on the list, when possible,

  1. review them for contentious unsourced information pr WP:BLP concerns
  2. add references (you may e.g. lift references from the Dutch page, if that page exists)
  3. remove the {{BLP unsourced}} template from the article.

Assistance needed with articles on Dutch ships and naval officers

Hi there, I am currently working on a draft article of Battle of Camperdown and need some urgent help with articles on Dutch warships and naval officers, with the redlinks outlined at User:jackyd101/Workbox7. I know that a number of the required articles have their equivalents on Nederlands wikipedia and I am leaving this notice in several places in the hope that someone can help me. If you are able to translate Dutch and willing to work on this then please drop me a line on my talk page and I'll explain more specifically which articles I need the most (I can handle the required articles on British ships and officers myself, its just the Dutch I'm struggling with). Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Netherlands/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Netherlands/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.

The lead states: "'The name "RaRa" is said to also mean "Guess who I am" in Dutch'". I absolutely fail to see how "RaRa" can be construed to mean "Guess who I am" in Dutch, or how anyone can get such a weird idea. What is going on there? 80.135.34.101 (talk) 03:23, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the 1950's, when I was a child and the family lived in South Africa, my father (who was Dutch) taught me a game in which the players chant "Ra ra ra wie heeft de ball?". I had never been taught the meaning of "Ra ra ra", but I always udnerstood the meaning of "wie heeft de ball?". Martinvl (talk) 05:27, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Ra-" is the first part of the verb "raden". I have little doubt that that is where "ra" comes from. As for the first question, "RaRa" means "guess who I am" because the group's terrorist actions were a kind of a guessing game, a whodunit if you will. Hope this helps. Drmies (talk) 05:30, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Afrikaans word for guess is raai. (Afrikaans is derived from the colloquial Dutch that was used in South Africa in the nineteenth and early twentieth century). Martinvl (talk) 07:50, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right. Vernacular Dutch has "raaien." Drmies (talk) 14:56, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Netherlands/Unreferenced BLPs. Currently you have approximately 101 articles to be referenced. Other project lists can be found at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates and User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:26, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help looking for Dutch book

Perhaps this is the wrong place to ask for this kind of help - and I know this does not directly relate to the Netherlands WikiProject, but I was hoping someone might be able to access a book locally and help me with a citation for an article. I am looking for the book Albumdossier: 1969-2002 by Johan van Slooten, a book that does not appear to be in print anymore and is not available in the United States. I wish to know the page number of the book that has information about a U2 album called Achtung Baby, specifically a page that states what the album's charting peak was. I apologize if this request is misplaced, but I figured someone from the Netherlands might be involved in this project and be able to access the book at their local library. Thanks for your understanding. Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 14:07, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I used a Dutch source to confirm that what was in Wikipedia was wrong. Wikipedia was only corroborated by itself and mirror sites. Other sources which I plan to add had a different version. Only the Dutch source confirms that Wikipedia's statement is a myth.

The holy roman empire lost about all authority over the Netherlands in the 14th century, so a newspaper published in 1618 would fall outside of that political entity. See further comments on talk. Arnoutf (talk) 13:35, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

race riots?

In the article on Culemborg there is talk of violent race riots. Since I live there and am also a member of the local fire brigade (so I guess I have some insight in the matter) I think the world 'riots' implicates much and much more than actually happened. Yes, there were tensions, yes, there were fights, yes, there were cars on fire. But if it is on a scale of 3 or 4 streets and an area that can be walked through in 2 minutes I feel the term 'riot' is a gross exaggeration. Especially compared to real riots like in Miami or Paris suburbs both some years ago. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.213.47.11 (talk) 07:34, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Opera in the Netherlands

Hi all. I'm a member of WP:WikiProject Opera and I have noticed that our coverage of opera in the Netherlands is rather poor. We have an articles on De Nederlandse Opera and its theatre, Stopera, which was established after World War II. However, opera was performed in Amsterdam for several hundred years before that, and there are no articles on any opera houses/theatres from before the construction of the Stopera, which only opened in 1986. Also, we could use articles on other current opera companies in other cites, like the Nationale Reisopera in Enschede, the Stichting Opera Groningen, and Opera Zuid in Maastricht. Netherlands articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Netherlands articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Hello,

I have never suggested an edit before, so I am not sure how one goes about that, but I saw on the link for Frikadellen that it says it was invented in 1959:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frikandel

I just stumbled onto an old "Dr. Oetker's Schulkochbuch" that has a reference to Frikandellen (I think it is the 1920 edition) on page 64. It's in parenthesis after a reference to "Dämpfschnitte."

The copy I got is missing the copyright page, but it has 144 pages, and I saw that # of pages mentioned on a Library of Congress page for the 1920 edition. The later editions, such as the ones in the 1930s had more pages.

I know this cookbook predates 1959 because the cover is in Kurrentschrift and the text is in Fraktur, which was pretty much obliterated from the German script after World War II.

Anyway, I think it was invented much earlier than the article suggests.

Cheers, Sheryl Zettner

OK, you're mixing up the Netherlands (with their frikadel, respelled in 2005 to frikandel to better reflect common pronunciation)) and Germany (with their Frikadelle). These are different things. The German variant is a flattened meatball, the Dutch variant started out as a sausage-like meatball (invented in 1954 by Gerrit de Vries; in 1959 "perfected" by giving it a smooth surface by Jan Bekkers (now Jan Beckers)). Lodewijk van den Berg

The article on Lodewijk van den Berg says that he "was a naturalized American and no longer a Dutch citizen" at the time he went to space (1985). The accompanying reference (with a dead link) states that "according to Dutch regulations a person automatically loses the Dutch nationality if he voluntarily accepted another nationality before April 1, 2003". But can that retroactively apply to Van den Berg's 1985 flight? Had he really lost his Dutch citizenship at the time he took up American citizenship? Or did he only lose his Dutch citizenship when the current law came into force, which afaik was after the space flight? 83.84.195.88 (talk) 14:07, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the text is incomplete. He lost his citizenship based on the Dutch Nationality Act of January 1, 1985. That act was amended in 2003, to create some exceptions. [1] Whaledad (talk) 14:28, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maarten Maartens

Just a question. Why isn't the article about Maarten Maartens within the scope of the WikiProject Netherlands? Since I wrote it, in 2009, I have always wondered why the WikiProject Netherlands has ignored it. He was Dutch and he was world famous in his time. The Netherlands should be proud of him! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sijtze Reurich (talkcontribs) 11:38, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have just put up a page on Bloeme Evers-Emden using the English-language sources available to me. I invite your editors to improve the article with Dutch-language sources as well. Thank you, Yoninah (talk) 16:50, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What happened to them ?

I am looking for an information about a former Netherlands construction companty named Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij Voor Havenwerken which was an important international company of 1950s and 1960s. But the name of the company doesn't appear on web pages. I have a vague idea that the company may have merged to a Spanish company. But other than that, I have no idea of the company. Any information or even a hint appreciated. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 14:14, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reimerswaal

Yesterday I proposed that the Reimerswaal article should be split into an article about the historic city and an article about the current municipality. I've just thought that I should note it here too, for example I don't know what (if any) naming conventions exist for articles about Dutch places. Thryduulf (talk) 16:43, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've now carried out this split and disambiguated almost every incoming link. There are a couple of templates that need updating though, Template:Single-column table row (and it's /doc page) and Template:Data Reimerswaal. I don't know how to fix these without breaking them though, sorry! Thryduulf (talk) 08:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect I have fixed the template. adding the article parameter to the data template fixed the others. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:37, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article improvement project for Koninginnedag

Hi, I've been working to improve this article, which is presently a good article nominee, and I hope down the road to nominate for FA. I'd be grateful for reviewers, random comments, I'm not picky!--Wehwalt (talk) 13:34, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well it says it is GA now. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:57, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is. It's now a Featured Article Candidate (for nomination, click here). Reviews and commenters would be very welcome.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:48, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Split Cabinet Crisis 2006 into new article?

Hi, I recommended this split after reading the Second Balkenende Cabinet article. I thought the topic has enough complexity, context leading up to the cabinet dispute, and consequences to warrant the creation of a new article. This would make it easier for the reader to access the information from all sides - the cabinet perspective and Ayaan Hirsi Ali's perspective - without having to go through multiple pages. What do you guys think? Rabiddog51sb (talk) 00:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request

I know this might sound odd, but is there anyone here who can translate a newspaper article for me (from the Haagsche Courant) that I might be able to use as sourcing? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 14:05, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of dutch people, what qualifies as famous and notable?

I noticed in the movies section that dutch oscar winner Michael Dudok de Wit was missing so i added him to the list. I also added animator Paul Driessen and Marten Toonder but i put him in visual arts (since he is foremost a comic creator) But i also noticed no less then four porn actresses, maybe some of them could be called famous or notable, but i had never heard of them.

I would think the goal is a balanced list with people that are relevant in their field on a global scale. Looking at it like this, the four actresses might qualify, but how do you judge this? Peter wassink (talk) 19:34, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One way to judge the notability of the subject is to see how many hits the article gets and how many other articles link to it. If they get hardly any hits and have hardly any other links, they are clearly not notable and should be deleted. Martinvl (talk) 21:22, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Netherlands to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Netherlands/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 21:30, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't bother this project is as dead as the dodo (which you may notice was killed off by Dutch sailors). SpeakFree (talk)(contribs) 02:44, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
