Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hillcrest is a public school situated in Taman Sri Gombak and ranked as one of the best schools in the state of Selangor in Malaysia. The school is well-known for its exceptional achievement in standardised examinations; Penilaian Menengah Rendah and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. The school serves Form 1 to Form 5, Form 6 students are not accepted. The school is widely-known as Hillcrest and the students of Hillcrest bear the name Hillcrestians

History

The school construction was started in 1989 and the first block was completed in 1991, hence opening its doors to the pioneer batch of students on 1st December 1990. The school area was originally an estate of 8.2 hectares. The school received its name, Hillcrest, by the Gombak Prefecture Education Office that named the school after the developing company that have developed the neighborhood that it is intended to serve, the Taman Seri Gombak; Hillcrest Garden Sdn Bhd

Encik Irwan Tan Abdullah, who was the then-senior assistant, was elected as the first acting-principal on 1st December 1992. The first principal is Puan Sukma Murni Bt Abdul Samad. During that time, only the Munsyi building is in operation and the other building, the Sri Lanang building was still under construction. Kajai building was officially completed in 1996. With the operation of the new building, the school now have a Kemahiran Hidup Lab (Life Skills Labs), three science labs and another two new classrooms in operation.

On the 1st July 1997, Puan Rohani Bt Bakar became the principal succeeding the first principal, Puan Sukma Murni. She served the school for six months before she is transferred to SMK Melawati. She was then succeeded by Puan Hodaima Bt Haji Halil. She served seven years before her retirement in 2005. Pn Kamalyah Bt Teh Mohamed followed. Pn Nik Maryam bt Idris whom joined the school in 2007 succeeded Pn Kamalyah. Later in 2011, Pn Sharifah Bt Mamat succeeded Pn Nik Maryam. She is currently the incumbent principal.

The first PIBG meeting was launched by Yang Berhormat Datin Paduka Zaleha Bt Ismail on 17th January 1993.

Annual Sports Day

The school's first sports day was held on February 12, 1993 and was launched by Yang Berhormat Encik Ahmad Bahari Abdul Rahman, the then-parliamentary member of Gombak SETIA. The school's first sport flag was also launched by him.

Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) of SMK Hillcrest

Founded in 1994, MRCS have a humble beginning in this school. Under the leadership of many well-elected chairman, the society have emerged as one of the largest society in the school with many contributions and achievements made at the school-level as well as at the district-level. Each year, it receive participation from students of different background as its members. The two backbone of the society are the First Aid Squad and the Elite Squad.

The First Aid Squad is the single most important squad of the society and its presence is very prominent in the school. The squad is actively deploy to many events at the district-level and constantly participate in many activities organized by the Gombak Malaysian Red Crescent Society and also the Majlis Sukan Sekolah Daerah activities.

In 2011, the society reached another milestone when they formed their first ever batch of Elite Squad. This highly trained squad undergoes 4-weeks of intensive training and each prospective-members are required to sit for an examination and required to pass with at least 60% marks for them to be officially accepted into the squad. The first examination was conducted at 5 Alpha with the questions set by the then-committee members spearheaded by Sergeant Abdul Wafi and assisted by Sergeant Tan Shen Tze, Mohd Syameer Firdaus and Gan I-Ning.

In 2012, under the administration of the new chairman, the society reached another milestone when their first official Facebook page was set up with the objective to enhance the communication between the society members. In the same year, the society have actively participated in many activities organized by the district MRCS and they themselves have also internally organized many activities for the members. Achievements

2009

In 2009, one of SMK Hillcrest's students, Nik Muhammad Harith bin Nik Zafri, was appointed as one of the Malaysian representatives travelling to the US under the AFS Program - AFS Intercultural US sponsored by Department of State, Washington DC Nik Harith was stationed at Boardman Ohio. He is also the Recipient of 2008 Student Leader Award (Anugerah Tokoh Pelajar 2008) scoring 11 A1 in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and also scored the best foreign student in Boardman High School Ohio, Pennsylvania (where he is also the first Malaysian student attending such school)

2010

In 2010, one of SMK Hillcrest's student, Arveent Srirangan Kathirtchelvan was the runner-up for The Star-ESUM-HSBC Public Speaking Competition.He won an all expenses paid trip to London to participate in The ESU International Public Speaking Competition.

2011

In 2011, the SMK Hillcrest's debate team made it big by representing the state of Selangor (beating 10 teams on the way)in the Datuk Wira Debate Cup. In all 11 rounds, the Best Speaker award was given to Arveent Srirangan Kathirtchelvan (the 3rd speaker of the team)for 10 times (upon defeating Perak in the octofinals).

For the SPM examinations of year 2011, 4 students from SMK Hillcrest attained straight A+s. Among these students were Arveent Srirangan Kathirtchelvan (10 A+), Veeneshankar Ravichandar (10A+, who was also the 2nd speaker of the debate team of 2011), Dheebak Kumaran Jayakumaran (10A+) and Diviya Gunasegaran (9A+). This achievement made SMK Hillcrest the school with the most number of students scoring striaght A+ in the district of Gombak. These students were also in the list of the top 10 students of the state of Selangor. Arveent Srirangan was awarded the Tokoh Pelajar (Valedictorian) award for the year.

2012

In 2012, once again, SMK Hillcrest have proved itself as one of the best school in the district when one of its student was awarded as one of the best student in Selangor for 2012 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia Examination; Mohd Syameer Firdaus, the school's only straight A+ (highest distinction) achiever. Besides his excellent and strong academic record, he is also a very active and dedicated member of several society in the school. He was the former Chairman of the Red Crescent Society, Chief of Publicity Bureau of the Junior Councillors Society and Treasurer of the Mathematics Society. He too have represented the school in many competitions and events organized at the district-level mainly under the Gombak Malaysian Red Crescent Society. Along with the Best Student of the Year 2012 Award, he was also awarded as the best student for Malay Language subject and English for Science and Technology subject of the 2012 as he is the only student from the school that have achieved A+ in both of the aforementioned subjects.

The award, Tokoh Pelajar 2012 (Best Overall Student of 2012) was awarded to Muhammad Faris Abdul Hamid. He is the closest competitor to Mohd Syameer Firdaus. He represented the school in many co curricular activities. With both his outstanding performance in SPM and also in co curricular fields, he was awarded with the Tokoh Pelajar 2012 award. He is also the best student for Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects in 2012.

2013

In 2013, SMK Hillcrest has once again, Dominated the co-curriculum achievement of districts.

The Football Team were able to win and carry the cup for being Champions of the Gombak District.

The Debate Team on the other hand has won Districts. They have represented the Gombak District and also won the Selangor-State Datuk Wira Debate beating top-notch teams such as SMK Damansara Utama along the way. The finals of States were "This House Believes That Parents Should Be Responsible For Their Children's Wrongdoing" and SMK Hillcrest were against the debate team of SMK Subang Utama. Once again, SMK Hillcrest emerged as the champions of Selangor, victorious in all 9 rounds on the way. By defeating international representatives, former Selangor champions and resplendent schools as far as debating is concerned, SMK Hillcrest clearly has etched its name as one of the best debating schools in the state of Selangor. The team composed of Muhd Ishraq bin Abdul Rahman, Delib Sharwen Kathirtchelvan, Sukhdev Singh Malhi, Gayathri Santhiran Segaran and Hafizuddin bin Yusof. Astounding credit was given to Pn Shobha Menon after she successfully lead the school to represent the state of Selangor for the second time after 2011. The other teachers include Pn Edora Elias, Pn Zulfahaila Jamil and Pn Zainariah who have also equally contributed to the team's victory.

They will now represent the state of Selangor in the Datuk Wira National Debate of 2013 which will be held in Ipoh, Perak.
