(for the Armenian ruler, see Aravan)

Aravan is a town in the Fergahna Valley, in Aravan District of Osh Province, Kyrgygstan, about 25km west of Osh. It is the capital of Aravan District. Nearby are the Celestial Horses of Aravan, carved on a cliff face perhaps in the first century. They are thought to represent the 'blood-sweating horses' sought by the Han dynasty Chinese. The site is sacred to the not-quite-orthodox Muslims of the region. There is a Sufi shrine. The Chil-Ustun cave system is 4km away in the hills above the Aravan and Ak-Buura rivers. There is a similar cave system 20km away. Neither is easily accessable.
