Image of Māori taonga

[edit]

Justification for removal of image of Robley and severed heads: Members of the Māori community have requested removal of this image: "From a Māori perspective, this image is taonga due to the presence of ancestors, but given they are the unwitting subjects of the image, it is incredibly traumatising and offensive." Hi @Zeromonk, for better or for worse, we cannot censor Wikipedia to avoid offending people, even when such material is offensive from a cultural standpoint (eg, Depictions of Muhammad). That Wikipedia is WP:NOTCENSORED is long-standing policy. The ground level of course has to be that the material adds value, but I think it is hard to dispute that this photograph does. — HTGS (talk) 07:47, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@HTGS thanks, point taken. I'll think how best to convey the cultural sensitivity via the text and caption. Then it's an addition rather than a removal and enriches the information available about context of the image. Any suggestions of wordings for this very much appreciated.
