by Laurence Sterne
'Tristram Shandy' was first published in 9 volumes over the period of 8 years from 1759 to 1767, using various printers/publishers. Volumes I and II were first printed in York, 1759 by Ann Ward; Volumes III and IV in London, 1761 by R & J. Dodsley; Volumes V to IX were printed in London by Becket and Dehondt (Volume V and VI in 1762; Volume VII and VIII in 1765; and Volume IX in 1767). [Based on Laurence Sterne: Tristram Shandy (1988) by Wolfgang Iser, p. xv.
This transcription, which is based on scanned copies from the Cambridge University Library website, is a mixture of various editions, as indicated below.
The work makes a lot of use of dashes. These vary in length, but the variation mostly appears to be for typesetting purposes only, since there are few instances where words break at the ends of lines. Unless, from the context, there is a clear reason for not doing so, the em dash — has been used.
