Hell in a Cell (2009) è stata la prima edizione dell'omonimo evento in pay-per-view prodotto dalla WWE. L'evento si è svolto il 4 ottobre 2009 al Prudential Center di New Jersey. Questo evento sostituisce No Mercy.[1]. L'evento si è svolto il 4 ottobre 2009 presso il Prudential Center di Newark (New Jersey). La particolarità dell'evento è quella di proporre come Main Event esclusivamente Hell in a Cell (Come suggerisce il titolo dell'evento), vale a dire Match nella gabbia. Nel PPV sono coinvolti i wrestler di Raw, SmackDown e ECW. Il nome dell'evento è stato scelto dai fan nel sito ufficiale della WWE. La colonna sonora ufficiale dell'evento è Monster di Skillet.[2]

La principale rivalità dal roster di Raw vide protagonisti John Cena, Randy Orton e la loro corsa per il WWE Championship; A SummerSlam, Orton mantenne il titolo in maniera molto controversa, facendosi più volte squalificare. Il proprietario della WWE Vince McMahon annunciò un rematch a Breaking Point; un I Quit match che fu vinto da Cena.[3][4][5] La notte seguente, a Raw, Orton ricevette un rematch per il titolo dalla conduttrice speciale di quella puntata Trish Stratus per il pay-per-view Hell in a Cell, in un Hell in a Cell match.[6]

La rivalità principale del roster di SmackDown! è tra il World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk e The Undertaker. A Breaking Point, i due si affrontarono in un Submission match. Nonostante Undertaker costrinse Punk alla resa grazie alla sua Hell's Gate, il General Manager di SmackDown Theodore Long dichiarò che la presa era stato vietata tempo addietro da Vickie Guerrero e riavviò il match. Punk bloccò poi Taker nella sua Anaconda Vise, e nonostante Undertaker non avesse ceduto, Punk fu dichiarato vincitore, quando l'arbitro Scott Armstrong fece suonare il gong.[7] Il 18 settembre, durante un'edizione di SmackDown, Undertaker rapì Long dentro la sua limousine. Liberato la settimana successiva, Long annunciò la legalizzazione della Hell's Gate e un rematch tra i due che si sarebbe svolto a Hell in a Cell, in Hell in a Cell Match.[8]

Triple H e Shawn Michaels riformarono la D-Generation X a SummerSlam, dove riuscirono a sconfiggere Ted DiBiase e Cody Rhodes (i componenti della Legacy).[9] La loro faida proseguì nel corso delle settimane successive, fino ad arrivare ad un Submissions Count Anywhere Match a Breaking Point 2009, match che vide trionfare la Legacy.[10] Dopo un'ultima grande rissa tra le due squadre avvenuta la notte seguente al PPV, a Raw, fu annunciato che le due squadre si sarebbero affrontate ad Hell in a Cell, in un Tag Team Hell in a Cell.[6]

Dolph Ziggler continuò la sua ricerca del WWE Intercontinental Championship, iniziata quando vinse un Triple Threat match il 27 agosto durante un'edizione di WWE Superstars contro Mike Knox e Finlay per diventare il #1 Contender al titolo.[11] Una settimana più tardi, a SmackDown, John Morrison riuscì a sconfiggere Rey Mysterio diventando il nuovo campione intercontinentale.[12] Il match tra Ziggler e Morrison era in origine previsto per Breaking Point. Tuttavia, il match fu rinviato e, successivamente, annunciato per il PPV Hell in a Cell.[13][14]

Batista fece il suo ritorno in WWE dopo essere rimasto fuori dagli show per via di uno strappo al bicipite brachiale. A Raw annunciò il suo trasferimento a SmackDown!, dove entrò in conflitto con Unified Tag Team Champions Chris Jericho e The Big Show.[15] Dopo vari confronti con i due heel, Batista annunciò che li avrebbe affrontati a Hell in a Cell in un match con in palio i titoli, e scelse come partner il rientrante Rey Mysterio.[15]

La rivalità tra R-Truth e McIntyre non nacque sul ring, bensì per un match che non ebbe mai avuto luogo. Sebbene McIntyre dovesse affrontare il rapper a SmackDown, preferì attaccarlo prima del suono della campana. L'episodio si è ripetuto anche nelle settimane seguenti. Dopo che Mr. McMahon inserì la Superstar scozzese nel roster di SmackDown, R-Truth sfogò tutta la sua rabbia vendicandosi con dei brutali assalti alla nuova Superstar. La rivalità tra i due è continuata nelle settimane successive, senza però un vero e proprio confronto sul ring.[16]
