Abstract: This essay discusses the way nationalism developed in modern Korea.In understanding Korean nationalism one first has to know what the system of Dongxue ideas was,what relationship existed between the Dongxue political thought and the Peasants’ Uprising of 1894,and what significance the Uprising possessed in the history of modern Korean nationalism.The notion that man is heaven was put forth by the scholars of Dongxue,and they thus provided the peasants with the ideal and the organization base.In the political activities of peasants,the Dongxue ideology came to be strengthened and put into practice.As the result,Korean nationalism acquired the tradition that it was often developed through popular participation.
