If China and Taiwan can have trade ties, why can’t Pak and India?

Billions flowing between both nations through smuggling and ‘rerouting’ underscore potential benefits of normalising trade relations

Pakistan’s relationship with India has a long his­tory of volatility, but trade ties took a nosedive after 2019. The Pulwama attack escalated tensions, followed by India’s revocation of Jammu and Kash­mir’s special status in August.
These events strangled formal trade relations. India imposed a hefty tariff on Pakistani imports and suspended trade across the Line of Control. Pakistan retaliated with a trade ban, later allowing only essential pharmaceutical imports.
