Dehumidify naturally

As the monsoon rains come splattering down, so does the humidity and moisture that fills your room. It makes everything feel sticky, slippery, and just very heavy. So, here are a few ways to beat the humidity this monsoon.

Keep the windows open

When you keep the windows and doors open for circulation, it helps fresh air move through the house which in turn reduces the humidity levels. But if you live in a flat and opening the door isn’t possible, try to keep the balcony door and the windows open as much as possible.

Houseplants to absorb humidity

Certain houseplants can absorb moisture from the air through their leaves and will help you feel non-sticky when inside. Plants like peace lilies, spider plants, and the like are good at reducing humidity.

Rock salt

Rock salt is known to naturally absorb moisture from the air, making the home dehumidified. To try this out, fill a large bowl or container with rock salt and place it in a humid area. Slowly, the salt will start to clump together, showing that it is absorbing moisture.

Use the air conditioner

The air conditioner, when turned on in the dry setting, helps to dehumidify the room a little. While on cold it will immediately cool the room, on dry mode it will help lower the moisture level.

Turn on the exhaust fans

Exhaust fans, usually installed in the kitchen or near the bathroom, help remove humid air from the space. When the temperature drops and the rooms start feeling heavy and your face sticky, turn on all the exhausts to expel humid air outside.

Silica gel packs

The silica gel packs that are found in new bottles or containers also help in absorbing moisture from the air. Take a deep bowl and add in all the collected gel packs. It is alright to take them out of the pack or keep them in.

Dry the clothes outside

Although during the rainy season, people prefer to dry their clothes inside the rooms fearing the rain, this can increase the moisture content of the home. So, try to dry them out in the balcony or external space and make sure to keep the door closed to that room.

The last resort

If none of this seems to be working, the only resort would be a dehumidifier. Invest in a nice dehumidifier and keep it in the room where you spend the most time.
