The Movie: "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs"
Where You Can Stream It: Netflix
The Pitch: In addition to being the final Coen Brothers film, "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" is the most charming anthology Western about death you're ever likely to see. It's not only about death, but the specter of human mortality looms over all six segments of this film, which unfolds like a collection of short stories, complete with an actual book and the turning of pages onscreen.
In each story, a character meets their match in some way, whether it be through a musically inclined gunslinger or a math-inclined chicken. The sum total is a masterful, Oscar-nominated anthology where each tale holds its own pleasures yet also...

Amiah Miller and Bill Heck are rounding out the cast of Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming horror thriller film “Dust.”
The film stars Sarah Paulson of “American Horror Story,” Annaleigh Ashford and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in a story set in 1930s Oklahoma. The film is directed by Will Joines and Karrie Crouse, and Crouse penned the script. “Dust” commenced principal photography this week in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Miller previously starred as Nova in the 2017 film from 20th Century Studios “War for the Planet of the Apes” alongside Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn. In 2020, she was also seen in David Oyelowo’s feature directorial debut “The Water Man.”

Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings performed their Oscar-nominated song “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” at the 91nd Academy Awards on Sunday night.
Introduced by fellow Nashvillian Kacey Musgraves, the longtime musical partners donned matching embroidered Western suits to strum the song and harmonize in front of a starry night backdrop in Monument Valley. It was a minimalist performance, charmingly delivered as if around the campfire and not on the grand stage of the Oscars.

The 91st Academy Awards were held on February 24, 2019. For the first time in three decades, the Oscars did not have a host. That reduced the running time of this ceremony, which has stretched to over four hours in the past. Scroll down for the full and complete list of winners.
Leading this year’s nominees with 10 bids apiece are the Spanish-language film “Roma” and the English period drama “The Favourite.” They both contend for Best Picture as do eight-time nominees “A Star is Born” and “Vice.” “Black Panther” made history as the first comic book movie to reap a Best Picture; it is nominated for seven awards in all. Rounding out the top category are six-time nominee “BlacKkKlansman” and a pair of pictures with five bids apiece: “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Green Book.”

Kelly Clarkson said she’s a huge fan of Lady Gaga and wanted to show her appreciation for the Oscar nominee by performing a cover of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born.
During a tour stop Friday night in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the chart-topping singer and Voice coach told fans she’s always admired Gaga.
“It’s cool just to know that someone that talented is also really nice,” Clarkson said about the singer and actress. “I’ve been rooting for her for a while. This song! I just, I love it. It’s from that movie that she’s nominated for a billion awards for, and I hope she wins.”
Clarkson admitted she was a little nervous — especially since she didn’t have help from Bradley Cooper, aka Jackson Maine, still she proceeded to perform both parts.

This year’s crop of Oscar-nominated songs may be the most diverse in years: a ballad and a pop-rap from two of the year’s biggest films, plus a delicate lullaby from a Disney musical, a political themed anthem, and a novelty tune for singing cowboys.
“Shallow,” the top-10 hit from “A Star Is Born,” is widely favored to win, and would be a way for the Academy to acknowledge the success of the Bradley Cooper-directed musical remake and singer-songwriter Lady Gaga (also up for Best Actress), who was nominated three years ago for “Til It Happens to You.”
Its main competition would appear to be “All the Stars,” Kendrick Lamar’s duet with Sza for the “Black Panther” soundtrack, another top-10 hit but which — unlike “Shallow,” whose performance is central to “A Star Is Born” — is relegated to the end-credits roll of the Marvel film about an African prince-turned-superhero.

Since the beginning of their musical and personal partnership Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have evoked the primitive, traditional roots of country music. One of those most important traditions, the cowboy song, is captured in the pair’s plaintive Academy Award-nominated tune, “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings,” for which they’ve released their own recording.

Singer/songwriters Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have already been announced as set to perform their Oscar-nominated song from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” on the Academy Awards telecast Feb. 24. But no one will have to wait till then to hear the writers’ take on the tune. They’ve released their own recording of “When a Cowboy Trades HIs Spurs for Wings”.
The song is performed in the Coen brothers’ omnibus movie by actor Tim Blake Nelson and singer-turned-actor Willie Watson, who play gunslingers in the Old West who don’t let a duel that turns deadly for one of them stand in the way of an old-fashioned cowboy duet.
Welch and Rawlings are Americana favorites and theater headliners in their own right, so the recent decision to have the writers instead of actors sing the song on the Oscars was, while a rarity, not unanticipated in this instance. The duo did “When a Cowboy…...

Exclusive: Either today or tomorrow, the Academy will start leveling with what it is planning for the 91st Oscars on February 24. The Academy tweeted last night that all five nominated songs will be performed during the telecast, and insiders said that reports that only two — the Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper team-up “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, and Kendrick Lamar’s “All the Stars” from Black Panther — would be performed, were premature and only reflective of a proposal.
Since we’re dishing, here’s what I was told. The producers wanted to limit it to those two songs, and the reason the Academy walked back that decision was because either Lady Gaga herself, or her reps, made it clear she felt it was completely unfair to eliminated the three songs — almost like the Academy producers were forecasting who they thought would win — and that she wouldn’t perform if a change wasn’t made.

The Motion Picture Academy has suddenly changed its tune and will allow all five best song contenders to be performed on the Academy Award telecast that will air live on February 24. The not-so-good news is that each number will allegedly be allowed only 90 seconds. That’s about as long as the aria that Lady Gaga sings in “Shallow,” her nominated song from “A Star Is Born.”
Warble-gate came about after producers of the show told reps that they only had time for “Shallow” and Kendrick Lamar and Sza’s “All the Stars,” both top 10 hits, to be performed during the show, which they are trying to keep to three hours. But now spots have been offered to the other three contenders. Jennifer Hudson has accepted the invite to sing “I’ll Fight” from the doc “Rbg,” the 10th nomination without a win for the prolific Diane Warren. As for “The...

The Motion Picture Academy, responding to a widespread backlash to its initial plan to only spotlight two of the best original song nominees on the Oscarcast, is now planning to have all five nominated songs performed on the Feb. 24 show, Variety has learned.
Earlier today, the Academy tweeted that Jennifer Hudson would perform “I’ll Fight,” the Diane Warren-penned song from the documentary “Rbg.” A subsequent tweet announced a “spoiler” that “The Place Where the Lost Things Go” would be “performed by a surprise special guest.” Previously, the plan had been to include only the top 10 hits “Shallow,” from “A Star Is Born,” and “All the Stars,” from “Black Panther.”
Producers last week told representatives for the remaining three nominees that there wasn’t time to perform all five songs in a streamlined show. But now, sources tell Variety that offers have gone out to reps from all five to perform the songs,...

When it comes to the Best Song category, you would think a live show like the Oscar telecast that has been bleeding ratings lately would benefit from showcasing the five nominated songs on the air. Who doesn’t like a good halftime show. But apparently the academy, which continues to waffle over its hosting issues, has now floated the notion that only two of the nominated five songs — “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born,” sung by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, and Kendrick Lamar and Sza’s “All the Stars” from “Black Panther” – will be performed live .
What would get left out in the cold? Jennifer Hudson, Oscar-vetted for wailing her way through 2006’s “Dreamgirls” for one. Its her voice that soars on “I’ll Fight” from the Ruth Bader Ginsburg doc, “Rbg.” Adding more interest is the fact that is written by Diane Warren, a 10-time nominee who is massively overdue.

Only two of this year’s five Oscar-nominated songs may be performed live on the Academy Awards show Feb. 24, Variety has learned.
Multiple sources tell Variety that the two biggest chart hits — Kendrick Lamar and Sza’s “All the Stars” from “Black Panther” and Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” — are the two chosen by Academy execs and show producers for performance on the telecast.
The other three — “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns,” “I’ll Fight” from “Rbg” and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” — would likely be acknowledged only during the announcement of the song nominees. Rumors of their exclusion is already causing consternation among members of the music branch as well as among those nominees’ respective camps.
The Academy declined specific comment except to say that no decision on song performances has been made yet.

Gillian Welch had a brush with the Academy Awards universe back in 2000, when the Coen Brothers’ acclaimed O Brother, Where Art Thou? was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The blockbuster soundtrack, featuring contributions by Welch, largely consisted of rearranged old folk tunes, but didn’t net any musical nominations.

Since it arrived last fall, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s hit duet from A Star Is Born, “Shallow,” has seemed the likely front-runner for Best Original Song at the Oscars. Tuesday’s Oscar music nominations produced some of the day’s biggest surprises, inevitabilities and near-inevitabilities that still produced a sigh of relief. Some notes on the shocks and happy affirmations in the Best Original Song and Score fields:
1. No “First Man.” That was the biggest shocker of Tuesday’s announcement. Justin Hurwitz, who won song and score Oscars for 2016’s “La La Land,” was widely expected to be among the final five for his music for Damien Chazelle’s moon-landing saga. 1. No “First Man.” That was the biggest shocker of Tuesday’s announcement. Justin Hurwitz, who won song and score Oscars for 2016’s “La La Land,” was widely expected to be among the final five for his music for Damien Chazelle’s moon-landing saga. After all, he already won the Golden Globe and Broadcast Film Critics awards. Academy Awards officials released a short list of contenders for Best Original Song on Monday. It was the first time ever that the composers branch has whittled a massive number of entries down to just 15 tunes and announced those names to the public. Top stars are among the songwriters eligible to win an Oscar, including Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, Troye Sivan, Kendrick Lamar and more.
We’ve got the complete list of the songwriters and performers for each of the 15 candidates below. Keep in mind that only the writers would actually be nominated on January 22 for Academy Awards, but you might see some of the performers on stage for the ceremony. Also keep in mind that these are the songwriters listed by the studios on the campaign websites and Fyc materials. It’s only appropriate that the newest film from the Coen brothers, the six-part Western anthology feature “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” includes a wealth of new songs and tracks from some of their frequent collaborators. While the film, which stars Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, Liam Neeson, Tom Waits, Zoe Kazan, and Bill Heck, includes some rollicking jams from a motley crew of villains and heroes from the American West, the soundtrack also includes some more gentle offerings from composer Carter Burwell.
Burwell and the Coens have worked together frequently throughout the years, and “Buster Scruggs” continues to build on a creative relationship that has spanned Coen films as classic and defining as “Blood Simple,” “Raising Arizona,” “Miller’s Crossing,” “Barton Fink,” “The Hudsucker Proxy,” and “Fargo.”

"I'd appreciate it if you deposit your weapon in the receptacle by the swinging doors." Netflix has debtued a second trailer for the new Coen Brothers film, though it's actually six new Coen Brothers films, as part of their western anthology feature The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Netflix will be releasing this in select theaters (on November 9th) before it arrives on Netflix for everyone else to watch. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year, and also played at Nyff. I saw this in Venice loved it, saying it's "thoroughly amusing and compelling to watch; none of the six stories is any worse than any other, they're all top notch." The huge ensemble cast includes Tyne Daly, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson, Bill Heck, Grainger Hines, Zoe Kazan, Harry Melling, Liam Neeson, Jonjo O'Neill, Chelcie Ross, Saul Rubinek, Tom Waits, Clancy Brown, Jefferson Mays, Stephen Root, and Willie Watson.

The Coen Bros. certainly have style with the films they make. I love that style, and this western anthology film, which implements that style, looks so freakin’ entertaining! These guys have a wonderful way with words. The movie also comes along with a great cast that includes Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, Liam Neeson, Clancy Brown, Brendan Gleeson, Zoe Kazan, Tom Waits, Stephen Root and many more.

Joel and Ethan Coen’s Netflix six-parter The Ballad of Buster Scruggs took the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival last weekend, and this new trailer shows what the buzz was about.
“First time?” asks an about-to-be-hanged James Franco (at his glib and goofy best) to the doomed, sobbing prisoner next to him.
The Western anthology is a series of tales about the American frontier, each chapter offering a distinct story about the West. As one character says in the trailer, people love to be distracted with stories – “so long as people in the story are us, but not us.”
Written, produced and directed by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, with Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle and Robert Graf serving as producers, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs features a cast including Franco, Tyne Daly, Brendan Gleeson, Bill Heck, Grainger Hines, Zoe Kazan, Harry Melling, Liam Neeson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jonjo O’Neill,...

"Things have a way of escalatin' out here in the West." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for the latest Coen Brothers feature, a western anthology film titled The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, featuring six tales about the American frontier. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival to mostly positive reviews. I saw this film in Venice and loved it, saying in my review that it's "thoroughly amusing and compelling to watch; none of the six stories is any worse than any other, they're all top notch." The film's huge ensemble cast includes Tyne Daly, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson, Bill Heck, Grainger Hines, Zoe Kazan, Harry Melling, Liam Neeson, Jonjo O'Neill, Chelcie Ross, Saul Rubinek, Tom Waits, Clancy Brown, Jefferson Mays, Stephen Root, and Willie Watson. Along with Tim Blake Nelson playing the titular musician/gunslinger Buster Scruggs. I can't wait until this is available for everyone to fully enjoy.

Perhaps the best surprise we got when it comes to the fall movie season is we were getting a brand-new film from Joel and Ethan Coen. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, once thought to be a Netflix series, is in fact a film and now the six-part anthology feature has its first trailer.
Starring Tyne Daly, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson, Bill Heck, Grainger Hines, Zoe Kazan, Harry Melling, Liam Neeson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jonjo O’Neill, Chelcie Ross, Saul Rubinek, Tom Waits, Clancy Brown, Jefferson Mays, Stephen Root, and Willie Watson, it picked up the Best Screenpaly award at Venice and will next stop by Nyff before a November release.
Rory O’Connor said in our review, “Scruggs is, of course, the latest work from brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, and represents a ravishing if wildly uneven addition to their catalogue. It also marks their first foray into the odd waters of the portmanteau subgenre,...
