Mario Van Peebles has been tapped to direct “That’ll Be the Day,” the story of how Buddy Holly and other musicians of the late 1950s helped give birth to rock ‘n’ roll and influence the wider societal and cultural landscape, including the civil rights movement.
Music has been central to much of Van Peebles’ work, from his 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” to his work on “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which he co-executive produced for Hulu. Van Peebles is currently writing a musical stage tribute to his father Melvin Van Peebles, to be performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center later this year.
“America’s tumultuous cultural melting pot has produced transcendent musical talent, including Buddy Holly, who was our first bad ass rock ’n’ roll nerd,” Van Peebles said in a statement.

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

“How could you place a human over God?”
Such is the reasoning for enduring the generational abuse at the hands of self-professed prophet Warren Jeffs, who led a secretive polygamous sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Flds). Netflix’s true crime docuseries “Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey,” streaming June 8, analyzes the radical arm of the Mormon Church of the Latter-Day Saints, with Jeff at the helm of an abusive polygamist child-marrying branch.
Jeff accumulated 78 wives — 24 of which were underage girls — over the course of his religious dictatorship. “Keep Sweet” interviews survivors and former wives of Jeff, including one woman who wed him at age 14.
“Young girls were like a commodity owned by the church,” a commentator says in the trailer.
Another adds, “The more the wives, the more children you have, the higher in heaven you will be.”

As if daylight saving time didn’t already have us out of sorts, here comes The Resident with a few more jarring changes.
As you’ll recall from Episode 5 of the Fox drama’s fifth season — which aired three weeks ago, before the show’s World Series-induced hiatus — The Resident has leapt forward by three years, sparing our tear ducts from the worst of Conrad’s grief over Nic. But where has this time jump left the Chastain staff? And which character’s new circumstances might be eliciting “very strong feelings from people,” as co-showrunner Peter Elkoff predicted last month?...

Melvin Van Peebles, who died Sept. 21 at 89, was not the inventor of Black cinema, but it’s no exaggeration to say that he smashed open the door to Black cinema as we know it. It’s a door that, until he came along, had been wedged tightly shut — by Hollywood and by mainstream American culture. There were a handful of Black actors who were stars, like Sidney Poitier and Lena Horne and Cicely Tyson, and a handful of films by Black filmmakers, but there was still a vast roster of things that Black artists working in the movies could and could not do. Van Peebles stood in front of his audience, holding that roster in hand, and burned it.
He was a novelist, a playwright, a recording artist, an actor, a director, a groundbreaker, a visionary: the filmmaker as one-man band. In key ways, he changed movie history, and if...

Melvin Van Peebles, the influential indie filmmaker who helped spawn the Blaxploitation genre with his 1971 film Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song, has died at the age of 89.
The director/actor/composer/novelist/playwright — among many other talents — died Wednesday night at his home with his family. The Criterion Collection, which will release a retrospective box set of Van Peebles’ work next week, announced his death in a statement. “Van Peebles made an indelible mark on the international cultural landscape. He will be deeply missed,” Criterion added. No cause of death was revealed.

Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, which turns 50 this month, is the opposite of the definition imposed on it. The 1971 film inspired the Blaxploitation genre, but Melvin Van Peebles exploited no one but himself. He got the money together, wrote the script and the music, selected the shots, aimed the camera, and starred in the film. He even did the stunts and post-production editing. Everything that came after was a reaction to his revolution. The father of Black cinema is one of the godfathers of independent filmmaking, and he turned everything upside down doing it.
Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song defies all expectations. Unapologetically Black, it flips every stereotype back on itself. It reconstructs the constrictions of sexual identification. It wasn’t made for the institution. It was made for the people. “This film is dedicated to all the Brothers and Sisters who had enough of the Man,” reads the opening titles. That...

It’s never really the final frontier for any beloved fan property, now is it? We’ve known what the Discovery will look like since last year’s Comic-Con and we even got a glimpse of filming when the show finally went into production last January. What we haven’t known until now is what the series itself might be like. A lot’s changed from last summer, specifically the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller, who revealed a big vision for the series during the Summer 2016 TCAs, down to alien diversity amongst the crew.

As the DVD and Blu-ray release of Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven rides into your homes, we take a look at those heroes, anti-heroes, and low down dirty scoundrels that would make up our own cinematic posse. Sadly, none of the movie cowboys come from the Mario Van Peebles, ahead of its time, diversity epic, Posse, despite a cast that includes Stephen Baldwin, Billy Zane, and Big Daddy Kane. Alas.
Imagine if Thandie Netwon’s Westworld progressive, Maeve Millay, were to swipe on her generic tablet to the page marked “Host Influences and Templates”, then we’d like to think that amongst the hundreds of profiles garnered from one of Hollywood’s richest genres, The Western, this mostly magnificent seven would make up the first page.

Elementary school teachers deal with the occasional little monster, but in the horror film Cooties, an entire faculty faces an army of disobedient, hungry zombie children that are wilder and far more dangerous than any human troublemakers. Starring Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, and Leigh Whannell, Lionsgate Premiere's Cooties will kick off the 2015 Stanley Film Festival:
Press Release - "April 6, 2015 (Denver, Co) - The Stanley Film Festival, (Sff) produced by the Denver Film Society and presented by NBC Universal's Chiller, announced today that Lionsgate Premiere's Cooties will open the festival on Thursday, April 30, 2015.
From the minds of Leigh Whannell (co-creator of Saw and Insidious) and Ian Brennan (co-creator of Glee), Cooties is a horror comedy with unexpected laughs and unapologetic thrills. When a cafeteria food virus turns elementary school children into little killer savages, a group of misfit teachers must band together to escape the playground carnage. Comics aren't always on. Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy probably don't get up in the morning thinking, "I'm funny," no matter how entertaining they may be on TV or in a movie theater. Add to that list David Alan Grier, a comic actor known for his role in the '90s sketch comedy show "In Living Color" (yes, J Lo was one of the dancers), as well as his various movies, time on Broadway, and, more recently, his first book, "Barack Like Me: The Chocolate-Covered Truth." In person, Grier appears much quieter, less zany, and by his own admission these days, "less out there." However, he didn't hold back when it came time to talk to Moviefone about his role in the Tyler Perry-produced comedy "Peeples," in which he stars as Kerry Washington's dad. Grier talked at length about the cast, shenanigans on the set, the invasion of Twitter and Instagram,...

Welcome To The Punch. Boom. That is a brilliant film title. It hits you and it hits you hard. It’s an inviting knuckle sandwich to your conscious awareness and its five syllables sucker punch you and say, “Yeah, now you know me. You are watching this film, sunshine.”
Imprinted indelibly on my memory right from the first mention, how could I not follow it up and discover what mysteries lie behind the bombastic moniker? It immediately impresses me with its shocking violence and promises brutal action, intense energy and all the other sadomasochistic kicks I crave in my cinema trips. Just when you thought Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale couldn’t get any more handsome.
Redditor morphinapg has produced an image that combines the features of all five actors who have portrayed Bruce Wayne on the big screen, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The result is, well, a pretty good-looking dude. And probably a billionaire.
But does he possess the childhood trauma and vindictive rage that drives the caped crusader? Alas, such characteristics are only visible within.

How awesome is New York? So awesome that we're willing to throw crumbs to podunk towns like San Diego once in a while. Sure, knock yourself out, have the world's biggest pop culture convention in the world, we'll be over here on the East Coast being awesome.
As it happens, we have our own little Comic-Con and it ain't exactly something to sneeze at. Held in the House that Graft Built (a.k.a the Jacob K. Javits Center), New York Comic-Con is a perfectly suitable alternative for those too weak and puny to make it out to Sd. If it is your first time, however, the schedule can be a little overwhelming. Luckily, I'm here to help you strategize.

What happens when you put the greatest action heroes of all time into one movie? You get the epic explosion of badassery that is "The Expendables 2."
Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Jean-Claude Van Damme lead this sequel to the successful 2010 action film about a band of hired mercenaries. Although they're one cohesive unit, with so much testosterone gathered in one movie, we couldn't help but pit these actors against each other to see who can really be considered the most badass, based on their fighting style, muscle mass, studliness, weapons expertise and one-liners from their entire filmographies.
Whether they're a martial arts master, a skilled sniper or a bodacious bodybuilder, read on to see who's really the least expendable of "The Expendables 2" cast.

The Dark Knight Rises comes out this Friday on July 20th, and the first reviews of the film are starting to role in! I'm actually very surprised to see that there's mixed reviews, some of the critics thought the film had some problems. The movie also got some very positive reviews as well. None of these reviews sway my insane excitement for the movie, and I still think it's going to be an incredible film!
I've gathered together snippets from several reviews of the film from around the net for you to read. Check them out and let us know if they've changed your opinion of the film that you've built up in your head.

Don't worry! It's not a remake of Michael Mann's Heat! Badass action star Jason Statham has officially been cast in the remake of Burt Reynolds' 1987 film Heat, which is set to be directed by Brian De Palma. William Goldman will write the script for the film. Goldman wrote the original script for the first film, which was adapted from the book he wrote.
In the film "Statham plays the recovering gambling addict who makes his living providing protection on the rough edges of the gambling world. When a female friend is beaten by a high-rolling mobster, the enforcer kicks some ass and gets in over his head."
If you enjoy watching Statham kicking ass, then Heat is a movie you'll want to see. I liked the original film, but I can see how there's a lot of room for improvement. What are your thoughts on Statham and De...

The vigilante has been a mainstay in film for decades. Classic Hollywood westerns bestowed the lone ranger and the gun for hire with a mythic quality.
Recent films such as The Dark Knight and Taken have shown that the popularity of characters operating outside the confines of law and order remains intact. Last year, however, saw the release of several major films concerning a team of vigilantes, or a “vigilanteam” as I like to call them. The Losers (2010), The Expendables (2010) and The A-Team (2010) all portray a cast of characters who have been wronged and are out to get even. In essence these films are ensemble pieces, giving the audience a variation of characters to root for.
In the case of the new vigilanteams, nostalgia seems to be the buzz word. All three films contain a realism-defying sense of action bombast which recalls over-the-top eighties blockbusters. Furthermore, The Expendables and The A-Team...

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

Spin-offs are inevitable when something in Hollywood becomes successful. While "Jackass" will never be nominated for an Oscar (well, not until the Academy recognizes Achievement in Excrement), the three movies have grossed over $330 million worldwide.
Especially after the hugely successful release of "Jackass 3" (on DVD and Blu-ray today), this franchise is primed for a few movie spin-offs.
Since we haven't heard of any in the works, we took the liberty of devising nine concepts. Please comment below and tell us which one you like best. Hey, if you give us some valuable insight, maybe we'll make you an executive producer when we sell the spin-off. Well, or at least a production assistant.

A Conversation with Todd Phillips
