Ever since Marvel Studios launched Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the franchise landscape has changed exponentially. It hasn't always been for the better, but it has been a lot bigger, with the biggest change being the introduction of the Disney Plus shows.
The MCU Disney Plus shows produced a lot of highs for the franchise, including the Emmy-winning WandaVision, the record-breaking Loki, and the game-changing Moon Knight, but there were also some lows, such as the critically-reviled Secret Invasion.
It's been years since some of those shows streamed and fans are still holding out hope that some of them will return for sophomore seasons. Some will have their stories continue in various spinoffs (the story that began in WandaVision will continue through Agatha All Along and Vision Quest) but there are rumors of some direct sequel seasons for others, too.
The good news is that it sounds like...

Marvel has always had a fascination with stretching the limits of what is known and what is possible. One of the first proofs of that concept was the 1990s production of the X-Men animated series. Now, evolving into X-Men ’97, the show not only serves as an extension of the past but also re-examines what made the 1992 series so successful in the first place.

With an inherent interest in the progress of the modern-day MCU, fans and studio execs, sponsors and competitors, partners and collaborators – all wait patiently on the sidelines, waiting for the comic book studio juggernaut to either slip up or create a masterpiece. However, with recent accomplishments of X-Men ’97 under the belt, Kevin Feige may not call it quits just yet.

‘X-Men ’97’ was a breath of fresh air on Disney+. The continuation of the original animated series drew many fans back to the platform after the disappointment of ‘The Marvels.’
Combining nostalgia with excellent storytelling, the episodes kept us entertained for weeks, even though the plot moved quickly.
The hashtag ‘X-Men ’97’ trended for weeks, with social media buzzing with theories and discussions, primarily sparked by showrunner Beau DeMayo. The overwhelmingly positive reaction led to the confirmation of at least two additional seasons, with rumors suggesting the show could continue indefinitely.
However, the viewership numbers tell a different story. It seems that only die-hard fans of the original animated series and the X-Men team were drawn to this project.

‘X-Men ’97’ was truly a breath of fresh air on Disney+. The continuation of the original animated series brought numerous fans back to the platform following the failure that was ‘The Marvels.’
It was a perfect combination of nostalgia and excellent storytelling, and the episodes kept us entertained for weeks, despite burning through the plot rather fast.
‘X-Men ’97’ hashtag was trending for weeks, the social media was filled with theories and discussions, started by the showrunners themselves primarily Beau DeMayo. Seeing that overwhelmingly positive reaction to the show, it was confirmed that it would get at least 2 additional seasons, with several rumors going as far as claiming that the show would get as many seasons as possible.

We still don't know why exactly Marvel Studios parted ways with X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo shortly before the series launched (and no one seems willing to explain).
Unsurprisingly, the writer has today confirmed that he's in the dark about Marvel's season 2 plans and where the series goes from there. However, DeMayo also told fans on X - via Toonado.com - that he originally had a five-season plan which seemingly included taking us to the "Age of Apocalypse."
Marvel Studios might be looking to stick with that, though if "creative differences" came into play, there are any number of directions X-Men '97 could head in after this first batch of episodes.
Thank you. I’d like you to discover the answer to this on your own. But I will also say I had a five season plan.

‘X-Men ’97’ debuted last week on Disney+ with its first two episodes, and the initial reactions are fantastic. The series premiered with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics dubbing it the “Best Marvel release in years.” Metacritic also gave the show a high score of 82, indicating “Universal acclaim” – a rare achievement for recent Marvel Studios projects.
The series capitalizes on its strongest aspect: being a direct continuation of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series.’ It strives to maintain the essence of the original characters and animation while presenting a more mature and “raw” storyline than what audiences typically expect.

Three Marvels? In this economy? "The Marvels" (read /Film's review here) is technically a sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel," a film which rewound the clock to 1995 -- a mythical time when Blockbuster stores adorned every other street corner and nobody had ever heard of that Iron Man fellow -- for a fairly standalone story revealing how Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) got her superpowers. But at the same time, it's also the 33rd (!) movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is arriving on the heels of no less than eight live-action Disney+ MCU shows, one animated series, and even a pair of holiday-themed streaming specials.
That's a whole lot of continuity to account for, so much so that even the creatives behind the MCU have found it increasingly difficult to keep track of everything lately while at the same time making sure every new installment is a satisfying viewing experience unto itself.

A recent update to the MCU timeline on Disney+ provided a major change to the first projects in Phase 4.
Disney+ recently made a significant alteration to the MCU timeline, specifically related to the I Am Groot streaming series, consolidating it into one entry which came between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
This comes as the MCU timeline continues to shift, placing Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3 as one of the most recent events, despite its original 2020 release date if James Gunn hadn't been fired and then re-hired by the studio.

In 2021, Marvel entered a new phase.
Not just Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would catch up with new and old heroes in the aftermath of “Avengers: Endgame,” but a phase of multi-pronged storytelling synergy unlike anything before it. In Phase 4, the MCU embraced television with multiple Disney+ streaming series, driving subscribers to the platform with more Marvel content than ever before.
Major franchises like have previous explored the coexistence of live-action films and TV shows — as well as cartoons, comics, and graphic novels — but with clear narrative priorities. There hasn’t been a new tentpole Star Wars movie since Disney+, so those series haven’t had to share the spotlight yet; meanwhile, the MCU churns out both theatrical releases and streaming series with regularity, all of it set in roughly the same timeline and universe with interconnected characters, plot lines, and settings.

With the release of its second season, I Am Groot's meta episode intros have been officially changed for all of the show's episodes.
When I Am Groot first premiered, it was — and still is — the show with the shortest runtimes in the MCU. Episodes from both seasons ranged from four minutes at the shortest, and six minutes at the longest.
This meant that if Marvel Studios' standard fanfare opening sequence — which clocks in at about 40 seconds in length — was used for I Am Groot, it would take up a range from a sixth to a ninth of the episode's entire duration.

If there's one thing to be said for the Disney Studios Showcase at Destination D23 this year, it's that it gave those of us on the weekend news shift a nice quiet start to Sunday.
First, to give some perspective, here's a quick recap of the headlines from last year's D23 Expo. The 2022 event featured the announcement of two new Pixar movies and Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Wish," the first footage from "Elemental," the first footage from the live-action "Little Mermaid" remake, Rachel Zegler presenting the first teaser for "Snow White," Jude Law presenting a first look at Disney's "Peter Pan & Wendy," and the entire original cast of "Enchanted" showing up to introduce the trailer for "Disenchanted." On the Marvel Studios front, the showcase included a first look at "The Marvels," footage from "Loki" season 2, a preview of "Werewolf By Night," and a teaser for "Secret Invasion," among other treats.

It’s all about beginnings and endings in the Season 2 finale of “Minx.” The 1970s-set comedy from Ellen Rapoport starring Ophelia Lovibond as the idealistic editor of a popular women’s magazine ends its triumphant sophomore outing with an episode that attempts to reset the status quo.
After a season that saw the titular magazine become an international sensation at the cost of its employees’ happiness, the finale (now streaming on Starz) sees Joyce (Lovibond), who spent most of the eight-episode season buying into her own manufactured hype, finally take action against the demanding and opinionated Constance (Emmy nominee Elizabeth Perkins), the wealthy widow who came on board to finance the magazine. Unfortunately for Joyce and the rest of the staff, Constance has also made Doug (fan favorite Jake Johnson) an offer he can’t refuse, sparking interpersonal drama and setting the show up for a dramatic third season (should...

I Am Groot’s Kirsten Lepore had a pipe dream that involved giving Baby Groot a nose, and she never imagined that Marvel Studios would actually say yes to the zany idea.
The head writer-director is back with a second volume of animated shorts for Disney+, including the aforementioned episode, “Groot Noses Around.” The noseless tree-like creature from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy discovers the wonder (and the horror) that a sense of smell can offer, culminating in a gag that perfectly illustrates how young children will often take the path of least resistance.
“‘Groot gets a nose’ was the original logline, and I felt like I was sneaking it under the door at the eleventh hour,” Lepore tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I was like, ‘There’s no way [Marvel Studios is] going to choose this one.’ So I was shocked when that one came back circled.”

One of the MCU’s most beloved characters, Groot, has returned to the small screen once again as the second season of the animated short series I am Groot has been released on Disney+. If a series were centered on any other B-tier character of any other existing MCU IP (read Agatha), I would have gone on a rant about the MCU overexploiting its characters, but Groot is special, even among the ragtag ensemble known as The Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, unsurprisingly, the only two good ventures the MCU has released this year are based on characters from Guardians of the Galaxy, the first being the final, third installment of the movie series, and the second being this compilation of shorts we are going to discuss.
I am Groot is the fourth release of the ongoing fifth phase of the MCU’s storytelling, but chronologically, it falls right...

Even though MCU’s television schedule was recently reshuffled, with many upcoming series delayed, and some of them even indefinitely, we still have a handful of MCU content to watch by the end of this year. Apart from ‘Loki’ Season 2, which starts in October, and ‘The Marvels,’ which opens in theaters in November, MCU fans will get to watch the second season of ‘I Am Groot,’ a series of shorts that premiered last year.
