Pune: The body of another missing child was retrieved by the rescuers on Monday ending the long search operation. Nine members of a family had swept away in the raging waterfall at Lonavala Bhush Dam in Pune on Sunday. The spine-chilling incident was caught on camera where the family could be seen trying to hold on to a rock to save themselves, but all in vain.
Rescue teams had saved four people on the same day and recovered three bodies on Sunday. Then one of the missing child was found early on Monday and the corpse of another boy was found in the evening.
The rescue operation was launched on Sunday itself when the incident occurred and the teams found the bodies of a 36-year-old woman and two minor girls. The operation was undertaken by police and Navy divers and resumed on Monday when they recovered the body of Mariya Ansari (9) from a reservoir near the accident spot, a senior official from Pune rural police said, quoted PTI.
The bodies of Shahista Liaqat Ansari (36), Amima Adil Ansari (13) and Umera Adil Ansari (8) were recovered from the reservoir downstream on Sunday.
A relative said the family members travelled from Mumbai for a wedding a couple of days ago and on Sunday, over 15 members hired a bus for Lonavala to enjoy picnic, an official added, as per PTI.
With monsoon's arrival in the region, tourists have flocked the Bhushi and Pavana dam areas, often disregarding warnings from the police, the PTI report stated. A police officer reportedly said that on Sunday alone, more than 50,000 people visited Lonavala.
