Two People Tested Positive For Zika Virus Including A Pregnant Woman In Pune

Dr Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer of PMC said that they had sent 13 samples to NIV. However, as per NIV reports ,12 samples have tested negative for Zika virus. He added that surveillance activities are being held in both the affected areas.

Pune: A 28-year-old pregnant woman from Ganeshnagar, Erandwane and a 22-year-old man from Mundhwa tested positive for Zika virus taking the total number of cases in the city to five.
Public Health Department officials said that samples of a pregnant woman have tested positive for Zika, and two are expecting mothers who have tested negative, a HT report said. Orders have been issued to PMC to start screening of all pregnant women in the five-kilometre radius of Erandwane area.
The 28-year-old woman’s samples were sent to NIV on Wednesday. She complained of fever and rash and the NIV report received on Friday confirmed Zika virus infection in her samples, the HT report added. The woman is undergoing Antenatal Care (ANC) at Late Vishnu Yashwant Tharkude Dispensary, Karve Road.
The second Zika virus infection has been detected in a Mundhwa resident. He too complained of fever and body ache. As his samples were sent to NIV, the report confirmed Zika infection in his samples. His mother, a 47-year-old woman, was tested for Zika virus on June 1.

Dr Supriya Puranik, the senior consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Ankura Hospital for Women and Child explained that Zika virus can majorly impact pregnancy causing a birth defect called microcephaly, in which a baby is born with a small head. Zika virus can cause life-threatening health problems in newborn babies such as eye problems, hearing loss and seizures.
Dr Neelam Gorhe, deputy speaker of the Legislative Council expressed concerns over the increasing number of Zika virus cases in Pune. He added that a spike in Zika virus cases has been reported in Pune district.
Previously on June 20, Zika virus infection was reported in a 46-year-old doctor from Erandwane and his 15-year-old daughter.
