Pune: The number of Zika virus infections has risen to six in Pune with two new cases involving pregnant women in Erandwane. The two fresh cases were reported on Monday taking the total count to six, days after a doctor and his teenage doctor in the city tested positive for the virus.
They also live in Erandwane. Now, health officials have inspected the area and collected samples as many cases from the locality have come to light, reported news agency ANI. One pregnant women and a 22-year-old man from Mudhwa had tested positive for the virus on Saturday.
Speaking on the current situation, Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, health officer for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), said that they had collected 25 samples -- 12 from Erandwane including seven from pregnant women. Out of these, she added, two pregnant women tested positive for Zika virus, as per ANI.
Out of 13 samples from Mundhwa, no pregnant women tested positive, she further said.
Health officials are meanwhile conducting anomaly scams for pregnant women as they are at higher risk due to the infection. ANI reported that the authorities have enhanced surveillance in the affected areas her ethe women were found to be positive for Zika virus.
The outbreak of the virus has been a concern for the health and other departments in Pune. The civic body has asked the residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and monitor their health for any symptoms of Zika.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is also working closely with health authorities to track and contain the spread of the virus in the city.
