Is Renato Veiga’s Signing a Signal for Ben Chilwell’s Exit at Chelsea?

The club football has taken a backseat right now due to the ongoing Euro and Copa America competitions. However, many things are going on behind the scenes, as clubs are gearing up for the new season. Chelsea football club has been in action in the transfer market and they are about to surpass £100 million.

Chelsea is close to signing Renato Veiga from FC Basel for around £14 million. The 20-year-old left-sided centre-back is set for a medical at Cobham before signing a long-term contract. Basel confirmed on social media platform X that Veiga had left their training camp to negotiate with another club.
This signing will be Chelsea’s sixth and seventh acquisition this summer, as they have also agreed on a £17 million deal with Boca Juniors for young defender Aaron Anselmino. Once both players join, Chelsea's summer spending will surpass £100 million.
The Newly appointed head coach Enzo Maresca will evaluate Veiga during pre-season to determine if he can compete for a spot in the senior squad or if a loan move would be more beneficial. Veiga can play as an inverted left-back, a role Maresca favoured during his successful tenure at Leicester City.
Marc Cucurella demonstrated his ability to play this role effectively in the final stretch of last season. During a challenging match against Aston Villa in late April, former manager Mauricio Pochettino instructed Cucurella to move into the midfield while Chelsea had possession, helping the team come back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2.
Cucurella continued in this role in subsequent matches, contributing to a five-game winning streak to end the season. Despite struggling initially at Stamford Bridge, Cucurella's performance in this position showcased his strengths.
There is little debate about who will start the season at left-back for Chelsea. Ben Chilwell, the club's vice-captain, is another option but has not been used in this role yet. With three years remaining on his contract, this season is crucial for Chilwell under Maresca.
Chelsea has been searching for a versatile left-back this summer, and Veiga fits the profile. His ability to play multiple positions, experience in the inverted full-back role, and reasonable transfer fee make him a strategic acquisition.
Chilwell's recent injuries have hindered his progress, and while the club plans to keep him this summer, his future may be reassessed based on his performance in the upcoming season.
