If you’re looking to upgrade your skincare routine and minimize bedhead, investing in a silk pillowcase may just be the best solution. With its ultra-smooth and breathable surface, “it creates less potential irritation on the face, and less potential irritation and breakage on hair,” says board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, which is why silk hair bonnets are also the way to go, btw.

That means the best silk pillowcase can work wonders for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Plus, silk pillowcases are naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and temperature-regulating, so they can keep you cool and sweat-free in the summer, and warm and cozy during the winter.

Best Silk Pillowcase

Another great benefit of this luxurious fiber is its ability to keep your skin incredibly hydrated and moisturized. “Silk isn’t as absorbent as cotton, so if you’re putting product on your face or hair at night, it leaves the product where it belongs,” says textile expert Deborah Young.

Although some silk pillowcases look very similar, they often vary in terms of quality, price, and feel. So, before you dive into our favorite picks, here are a few things to look for in a silk pillowcase.

What to consider

Fiber content

When shopping for a silk pillowcase, it’s important for it to actually be 100 percent silk, says Dr. Gohara. Most silk pillowcases are made with mulberry silk, which comes from the cocoons of silkworms that exclusively eat mulberry leaves (hence the name). However, you might come across some silk pillowcases that are actually just satin. So, what’s the difference, and why does it matter?

Satin is a type of weave structure rather than a fabric, while silk is a protein fiber. Although some satin pillowcases can be made with natural silk, many are often blended with synthetic materials like polyester and rayon, which are less breathable and more likely to cause acne and skin irritation, says Dr. Gohara. “There really is a difference between sleeping on a silk pillowcase, a satin pillowcase, and a rough cotton pillowcase,” she explains. Ultimately, when you use a pillowcase that’s 100 percent pure silk, “you will notice the benefits on your skin, and it’s something worth investing in.”

Weight measurement

Similar to thread count in cotton sheets, momme is a term that’s commonly used to describe the weight measurement of silk. It also indicates the weave tightness, density, and overall quality of the material. Most silk pillowcases range from 19 momme (soft, more delicate, and relatively affordable) to 30 momme (luxurious, exceptionally durable, and expensive), with 22 momme widely considered to be an excellent middle ground.

Basically, as the momme count increases, it becomes heavier, denser, and more costly. You can even go as low as 16 momme if you’re looking for a less bulky, ultra soft, and budget-friendly option. However, Young recommends shopping for silk pillowcases that are 20 momme or higher. “Don’t be seduced just by the softness,” she says. “You have to go beyond the touch of them. Look for a certain heft so that they’re not flimsy.” The silk pillowcases on this list range from 16 to 25 momme, so you can choose your preferred level of durability, softness, and thickness at different price points.

Care instructions

Unlike cotton, mulberry silk is a delicate fiber that requires special care, explains Young. So, when ordering silk pillowcases online, you’ll want to pay attention to the label and specific care instructions because they may vary depending on the brand, quality, and fabric structure. While hand-washing is widely preferred, most silk pillowcases are machine-washable (more on that below!). Just make sure you’re using mild detergent and a gentle, cold wash cycle.

$75 at Amazon$91 at Macy's
Pros
  • Super comfortable
  • Machine-washable and dryable
  • 60-day return policy
Cons
  • Very expensive for a single pillowcase (not a pair)

We tested a ton of silk pillowcases from various brands, but this option from Blissy stood out for several reasons. Not only is it made from the highest grade of 100 percent pure mulberry silk, but it also has thermo-regulating and moisture-retaining properties that keep you cool and dry while you sleep, without dehydrating your skin. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and OEKO-TEX certified, which means it’s less likely to irritate sensitive, acne-prone skin.

Unlike most of the other options on this list, this silk pillowcase is both machine-washable and dryable, so you don’t have to worry about strictly hand-washing or line-drying. Just make sure you’re using the most gentle cycle setting on your washer, and the lowest temperature on your dryer for no more than 20 minutes.

Dr. Gohara says she loves using this silk pillowcase, noting that it’s "sturdy, good quality, and feels good on the skin.” Young also referred to Blissy as a “gold standard” brand for silk pillowcases. At $90, it’s definitely on the pricier side, but well worth the investment. Pure Silk Pillowcase
Pros
  • Reduces bedhead and tangles
  • Super soft and cool to the touch
  • Good variety of color and pattern options
Cons
  • Available in queen and king, but no standard size

Dr. Gohara swears by this bestselling pillowcase from Slip. And for good reason: Based on the brand’s recent clinical study and laboratory testing, this silk pillowcase creates about 43 percent less friction against your hair and skin compared to cotton and satin, which means it can aid in reducing the appearance of sleep lines and wrinkles. It also absorbs less face cream compared to standard cotton pillowcases, which means you can sleep comfortably at night knowing that the skincare products you use will stay on your face where they belong.

Similar to Blissy, this option from Slip is on the pricier side, but we found that the superior quality, durability, and luxurious feel make it well worth the splurge. Plus, it’s available in a wide variety of vibrant colors and cute patterns to liven up your bedroom or living room. “I use a lot of Slip products,” says Dr. Gohara. “I like that it’s 100 percent silk, well-made, and really sturdy.”

Silk Pillowcase for Hair and Skin

  • Great value
  • Lots of color options
  • Soft and durable
Cons
  • Stains easily

For a silk pillowcase that looks and feels expensive without the hefty price tag, this pick by Suatien is a great choice. For less than $50, you can get either a single pillowcase or a set of two, and you can choose from four sizes and more than 16 color options.

Made from 100 percent organic mulberry silk, this pillowcase is breathable and hygroscopic, which means it absorbs just the right amount of water from the environment to keep you dry and cool throughout the night, while also maintaining your skin’s natural moisture.

After washing this pillowcase several times, we love how well it holds up and that it stays silky soft and vibrant. One note we do have, though, is that it stains somewhat easily if you use oil-based hair products, so that’s something to keep in mind.

  • Stain-resistant
  • Excellent comfort and softness
Cons
  • Not exactly wrinkle-free

Those looking for a wide range of rich colors and floral patterns to match personal style and room decor, will like this silk pillowcase. Are silk pillowcases washable?

shape, rectangle

The short answer: Yes. However, you can’t just throw it in the washing machine with everything else, Young says. “Silk is a protein fiber, and protein fibers are weaker when they’re wet, so it has to be handled delicately.”

She recommends turning your silk pillowcases inside out, putting them in a mesh laundry bag, and using mild detergent and a delicate wash setting for the best results. Bleach may be your go-to for getting out tough stains on some of your clothes and sheets, but it’s too harsh for delicate fibers like silk. Instead, try spot cleaning by soaking your pillowcase in cold water and dabbing the stain with mild detergent.

If you opt to hand-wash your silk pillowcase, fill a basin or sink with cold water, add a few drops of mild detergent, and let it soak for a few minutes before gently stirring and rinsing. You can even add a little bit of distilled white vinegar or hair conditioner for the final rinse to help keep your pillowcase smooth and supple. Hot water can damage and shrink silk, so remember to always use a temperature that’s less than 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Just like your other bed linens, your silk pillowcases should be washed once per week to remove any oil, perspiration, and dead skin.

Lastly, when in doubt, always check the label inside your silk pillowcases and follow the care instructions. If the label indicates that you should hand-wash or dry clean only, then it’s best to believe it. Taking proper care of your silk pillowcases will help maintain the appearance, shape, and quality of them for years to come.
