Actress Candice Bergen made a comment about vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance at the 76th Emmy Awards on Sunday night.
Bergen presented the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award. She introduced the category by reflecting on her time starring in the comedy series Murphy Brown.
“I was surrounded by brilliant and funny actors, had the best scripts to work with, and in one classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother,” she said.

Candice Bergen came out swinging on Sunday night.
She just did it in a somewhat hushed tone.
At one point during the 2024 Emmy Awards, viewers and attendees were taken by surprise when the legendary actress came out on stage to present the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
This was honor Bergen won five times for her portrayal of news broadcaster Murphy Brown on the TV sitcom of the same name.

Not a lot of earth-shattering moments at last night’s Emmy Awards, but at least there were a handful of good jokes. In between Shogun and Hacks taking home the night’s major awards, here were the evening’s nine best punchlines and funniest moments…
1 Hopefully, the Last ‘The Bear’ Isn’t a Comedy’ Joke
Eugene Levy: “The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most-nominated comedy in history. Now, I love the show, and I know some of you will be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy — but in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”
2 Shoutout to ‘Hot Ones’
Dan Levy: “The creators of Shogun actually had their scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten and then translated back into English subtitles that you missed because you were also on your phone...

From the moment Eugene and Dan Levy casually strolled on stage — without so much as a pre-taped lead-in video — the 2024 Emmy Awards felt like nothing special. After all, many of the attendees had already been to an Emmys ceremony this year. Getting hyped to watch the same winners, year after year, is a recurring issue for TV’s grandest night, but the challenge becomes that much harder when a chunk of those winners were rewarded less than nine months ago. Similarly buzz-killing is the idea that the new winners are predetermined, as many expected “Shōgun,” “Baby Reindeer,” and “The Bear” to do well at the 76th Emmy Awards, which they did. For the most part.
But despite slight early surprises (Liza Colon-Zayas! Lamorne Morris!) and a major late stunner (“Hacks” putting the “comedy” back in Best Comedy Series), ABC’s telecast was constantly fighting familiarity, if not outright redundancy. Where...

The 2024 Emmy Awards were filled with several memorable moments throughout the night on Sunday, from historical wins and powerful speeches to heartfelt cast reunions and political jokes. Some of them included Anna Sawai, Liza Colón-Zayas and Hiroyuki Sanada making history with their wins; Candice Bergen making a catty J.D. Vance joke; and The West Wing, Happy Days and Saturday Night Live casts reuniting onstage. Below, The Hollywood Reporter highlights some of the night’s unforgettable moments.
John Leguizamo Celebrates Diverse Emmy Nominees in Powerful Speech
John Leguizamo is “almost happy and certainly less angry” with the nominees for the 2024 Emmys. When taking the stage during Sunday night’s show, the Emmy-winning actor was quick to point out, “I’m one of Hollywood’s Dei hires. That’s right, Dei. The ‘D’ is for diligence, the ‘E’ is for excellence, the ‘I’ is for imagination. And everyone in this room tonight...

It’s hard to make a yearly awards show feel special when it’s staged twice in one year. Such was the challenge facing the 76th annual Emmy Awards, which aired just eight months after its warmly nostalgic predecessor due to the prior show’s strike-related delay. (Both shows were helmed by the same producing team.) Factor in the Television Academy’s tendency toward repeat honorees — and more recently, select shows to sweep all awards in their category within a given year — and it’s understandable why Sunday’s broadcast was a relatively muted affair. But drab is drab. Whatever the justifications, the 76th Emmys were a far less dynamic and more stilted watch than the January show.
Take the signature flourish of a night that was otherwise straightforwardly staged: grouping presenters by archetype of character, from fathers to villains to doctors, and surrounding them with custom sets and backdrops.

It was a tame throwback Sunday at the Emmy Awards tonight with blasts from the past taking center stage in a show seemingly longing for another era.
Besides the unexpected and well deserved Best Comedy win for Hacks, the show was full of predictable trophies for FX’s Shōgun and The Bear and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. Along with anticipated victories for True Detective: Night Country’s Jodie Foster, The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki and Hacks’ Jean Smart, Sunday’s nostalgia-heavy, nearly three-hour 76th Primetime Emmy Awards was punctuated by a crowd-pleasing West Wing 25th anniversary reunion, featuring Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff and Dulé Hill.
Even so, there was not much new to be said there on this small screen display of back to the future.
“Our political landscape has shifted dramatically in recent years,” stated Moloney, the show’s Donna Moss, “but two things...

It all went down at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. Lots of wins, even more losses and many moments we just had to rate as either best or worst — from John Leguizamo’s impactful message about diversity and inclusion to Candice Bergen scratching at Donald Trump’s vice president pick Jd Vance.
Netflix’s thrilling drama miniseries “Baby Reindeer” took home four Emmys, alongside FX’s “The Bear” and “Shōgun,” while “Hacks” proved that comedic moments are needed to win Outstanding Comedy Series. Plus, Jodie Foster won her very first Emmy for her role in Season 4 of “True Detective: Night Country.”
The evening was hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, who both have taken home Emmys for their work on “Schitt’s Creek.” Here are the best and absolute worst moments from the night.

We’re back for our second Emmys ceremony in eight months — and maybe that explains why the whole night felt so listless. Sunday’s Emmys broadcast on ABC certainly had its moments and honored some outstanding shows and performances along the way. But overall, it was a disappointingly stuffy, by-the-numbers production that failed to capture the passion and creativity found on the small screen these days. TV is as daring as it’s ever been… but these Emmys weren’t nearly bold enough to reflect that.

A night of nostalgia, a Baby Reindeer sweep and an incredible launching pad for the upcoming seasons of The Bear and Shōgun made up the 76th annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday.
While the Family Levy didn’t exactly rock the L.A.’s Peacock Theater as the first father-and-son hosts, breakout moments came courtesy of TV’s old guard and Jodie Foster’s first Emmy win.
Here are some of the great moments, surprises and snubs from tonight’s telecast on ABC.
Great moment when Eugene Levy made a crack about The Bear‘s record wins in the comedy category and how, well, it’s hardly a knee-slapping series. “In the true spirit of The Bear we will not be making any jokes.”

It was a Happy Days 50th anniversary reunion tonight at the Emmys, with former stars Ron Howard and Henry Winkler presenting the Emmy for Best Directing for a Comedy Series.
Howard and Winkler appeared on a re-creation of the iconic Arnold’s Drive-In set, when Howard (aka Richie Cunningham), noted that their intro did not include music, specifically the “Happy Days” theme song. “Candice Bergen had a theme song,” said Howard, to which Winkler replied, “Well of course she would get one.”
“Well, I have a solution, you could do it,” said Howard, encouraging Winkler to go play the jukebox as he did on the series. “First of all, I’m out of practice, it takes schooling” joked Winkler, who then did the iconic Fonzie move and got the Happy Days theme song to play. “Well done,” said Howard.

The 76th annual Emmys has arrived, and with it comes the celebration of TV hits past and present as the event makes way for some extra special reunions, among which included a 50th-anniversary reunion for Happy Days stars Henry Winkler and Ron Howard. Presented by co-host Eugene Levy, Howard and Winkler took to the stage to present Emmy in the category for Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series. Before they turned their attention to the nominees, Winkler called out Howard’s recent Emmy win for his documentary Jim Henson: Idea Man. And it was then time to note that the stage fashioned after Happy Days‘ set “feels like home.” Kevin Winter/Getty Images “Did you notice anything?” Howard questioned then, noting that no theme song played for the stars during their entrance. “Candice Bergen had a theme song,” Howard complained before he suggested Winkler fix that problem. “You went to the Yale School of Drama,...

Jean Smart won the award for best lead actress in a comedy series at the 2024 Primetime Emmys. The actress, who won her second Emmy for her role as Deborah Vance on the Max (formerly HBO Max) comedy Hacks, quipped about the network’s name change in her acceptance speech during the award show.
“Thank you so, so much, so humbling, I really appreciate this because I don’t get enough attention,” joked Smart as she accepted the award presented by Candice Bergen. “I have so many people to thank, starting with our brilliant showrunners. Casey [Bloys] and everybody at HBO … Max … no, I’m sorry,” she added to a roar of laughter. “Just what we needed, another network.”

Candice Bergen and Selena Gomez took aim at Republican vice presidential candidate Jd Vance’s widely-mocked “childless cat ladies” comment at the Emmys.
While presenting during the show, Bergen brought up her series “Murphy Brown,” saying: “In one classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother. Candice Bergen returned to the 2024 Emmys stage Sunday night and landed a joke at the expense of Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance.
The former star of CBS’ Murphy Brown, who famously drew the ire of conservative politicians in the 1990s, made a direct comparison to her sitcom’s most famous storyline and current political headlines.
“For 11 years, I had the tremendous privilege of playing the lead in a comedy series called Murphy Brown,” the 78-year-old Bergen said. “I was surrounded by brilliant and funny actors, had the best scripts to work with, and, in one classic moment, my character was attacked by vice president Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother.”
Bergen took a beat, and then sarcastically said, “Oh, how far we’ve come … Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids.

TV legend Candice Bergen was on hand Sunday (September 15) night for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards to present the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series to Hacks star Jean Smart. But before she got to the business of handing out the award, she had a little something to say about her multiple Emmy-winning series, Murphy Brown, and how it relates to certain current events. “In one classic moment, my character was attacked by the vice president, Dan Quayle… when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother,” she remembered, citing his very public and publicized reaction to the show’s Season 4 finale. Then, in the run-up to the 1992 election, in which George H.W. Bush and his running mate were up for re-election, Quayle responded to the storyline where the titular character gave birth to a son and decided to raise him as a single mother.

Is “Shōgun” adding more Emmy hardware to its historic haul? Will “The Bear” break its own record? Those are the big questions heading into the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live coast-to-coast from Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. Est/5 p.m Pst on ABC.
Hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the main ceremony caps off a television year dominated by “Shōgun,” which already set a record for most Emmys by a drama series in a single year when it nearly swept the Creative Arts Emmys with 14. The FX drama, led by Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, will attempt to beef up its overall take when it competes with eight nominations in six top categories: drama series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, writing and directing. TheWrap’s awards guru Steve Pond boldly predicts “Shōgun” will go six for six on Sunday.

If you’re Jimmy Fallon or Horatio Sanz, Saturday Night Live screwups are a dime a dozen. But forget not being able to keep a straight face. When you’re doing live television, other things can — and do — go wrong, from uncontrollable animals to high-flying theatrics gone haywire.
Here are five times that SNL sketches went sideways — and there wasn’t a damn thing anyone could do about it…
1 Massive Head Wound Harry Play
When W.C. Fields said, “Never work with children or animals,” he was somehow predicting Massive Head Wound Harry, a sketch in which a dog decides to take comedy into its own paws.
The plan was always for the pooch to lick Harry’s unfortunate wound, but it wasn’t supposed to devour Dana Carvey’s head. The dog was so ravenous for the fake injury that Carvey got into a tug-of-war to keep it attached to his noggin.

As Jesse Collins Entertainment gears up to host the second Emmy Awards of 2024, the 76th annual ceremony is set to celebrate “SNL’s” 50th anniversary, “Happy Days” and “characters you’ve loved over the years.”
After the 75th Emmys saw reunions for TV classics like “The Sopranos,” “Cheers,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “All in the Family,” among others, EPs Collins, Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay hope to lean into nostalgia in a more character-driven way this year.
“We want to celebrate ‘SNL’s’ 50th — we got a great moment there,” Jesse Collins told TheWrap in a Thursday interview ahead of the show. “‘Happy Days’ — Ron Howard and Henry Winkler,” he said, with EP Dionne Harmon adding the team built a set for their onstage reunion on Sunday. The team remained tight-lipped on “one big surprise that [they] think everybody will love.”

The world changed when Joe Biden decided to step down from the presidential race. He put forward Kamala Harris to fight against Donald Trump in the upcoming US elections.

Both Trump and Harris have a plethora of celebrities supporting (or more specifically ‘endorsing’) their campaigns. Despite the odds, the battle between the presidential candidates and celebrities endorsing parties has started.

Before Donald Trump became the president of the United States and caused whirlwinds of controversies and more, he was just another guy linked to several women. While even during his marriages the politician is alleged to have been engaged in extra-marital affairs, there were ample times when he managed to land dates with several now-famous celebrities and figures.

One of the many well-known figures he is known to have dated is the Emmy-winning actress, Candice Bergen. In several appearances and interviews, the Murphy Brown star recalled her teenage years when she landed a blind date with the now Presidential candidate Trump.

When I interviewed Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego and president and CEO Maury McIntyre on Emmy nomination day, they indicated that despite low ratings for the star-studded 75th Emmys on Fox (delayed four months to January of this year), they were thrilled with its production and the nostalgia factor you probably could expect for such a major milestone year.
The pair indicated reunions and nostalgia for TV’s past would be returning to ABC’s turn at broadcasting Sunday’s Primetime Emmys, and just their luck — that network is battling DirecTV in a carriage dispute, and there is a possibility DirecTV customers won’t see the show and likely wins for Disney’s collection of networks. Those notably include FX, which picked up 21 Creative Arts Emmys over the weekend just for Shōgun and The Bear (seven) in their respective Drama Series and Comedy Series categories.

Suits is one of the best and most popular legal dramas that managed to make the profession of lawyer cool again. Created by Aaron Korsh, the USA Network series follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who has a photographic memory and joins Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) at a prestigious law firm. The only problem with that is Mike didn’t actually go to law school and he doesn’t have a degree about which he has to lie to everyone. Suits ran for 9 brilliant seasons and ended its run in 2019. The New Yorker boarded Saturday Night Live's 50th birthday train early this week, posting its review of the show — then simply Saturday Night — from November 7, 1975, four shows into its epic run. While reviewer Michael J. Arlen would never have predicted the late-night show would run for 50 years, he did see its unsteady comedic potential.
“The truth is that it’s a funny show and has enough comic spirit behind it so that even an actress of no notable comic expertise, such as Candice Bergen, can work along easily with the program,” Arlen wrote. “Still, it’s not really the gross tonnage of jokes in the skits which makes Saturday Night worth looking at. What is attractive and unusual about the program is that it is an attempt, finally, to provide entertainment on television in a recognizable, human, non-celebrity voice — and in a voice, too, that tries to deal with...

In 1977, Dolly Parton’s career was on enough of an upward trajectory that she was performing for audiences of celebrities. At a show in New York, a number of big names turned up to watch Parton sing. While Parton is confident in her abilities, she admitted that getting in front of this crowd was a daunting task.

In 1977, Parton geared up to play three shows at New York’s Bottom Line. Back in February 1952, the fourth-ever Primetime Emmy Awards were hosted by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the married couple behind “I Love Lucy,” from the Cocoanut Grove at the now-demolished Ambassador Hotel. It was also the last time spouses oversaw the proceedings. And actually, only one duo has even hosted the Emmys this century — Michael Che and Colin Jost in 2018.

We recently hosted a poll asking which TV legend should be the next person to receive the 2025 SAG life achievement award. The overwhelming top choice was Emmy and SAG winner Jean Smart. She received 31.84% of support among the 18 candidates we offered for consideration.
When we offered a similar poll last year, double Oscar winner Barbra Streisand was the top choice, and then she was indeed selected for this honor on the Screen Actors Guild Awards. We created a separate poll earlier this month about film legends with Meryl Streep receiving the most support over Glenn Close, Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange.
The SAG-AFTRA selection committee will likely be announcing their next recipient in the near future. The 2025 ceremony will be live February 23 streaming on Netflix.

In the 1970s, Dolly Parton took the stage at a New York concert in front of an array of celebrities. Major musicians, actors, and artists eagerly waited to hear Parton perform. While Parton was her typical self onstage, cracking jokes and singing songs about her upbringing, at least one critic believed the act was overly calculated. Parton’s guitarist shared why it may have come across this way.
Dolly Parton’s guitarist said she was very nervous at a concert in New York
In 1977, Parton played three shows at New York’s Bottom Line to audiences that included people like Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and John Belushi. The crowd adored her, but one critic for the New Times believed Parton was overly concerned with “capturing attention than on rewarding it.” Parton’s guitarist, Don Roth, thought this resulted from nerves.
“I can tell you one thing,” Roth said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash.

Exclusive: Mayim Bialik’s Sad Clown Productions is gearing up to produce The Maccabees, a new feature on the historic achievements of the Yeshiva University Men’s Basketball Team, coached by Elliot Steinmetz.
Written by Matt Ritter (Chained to My Ex), the film will watch as a lawyer moonlighting as a basketball coach leads his underdog team of Jewish players to a remarkable winning streak, shattering stereotypes in the process.
Standing against the odds with a historic run, winning over 50 games in the 2019 and 2020 seasons — the longest winning streak in the history of men’s college basketball — the Yeshiva team has continued to crush stereotypes up to the present. A sturdy team that’s defied all odds while staying true to their heritage, they’ve played while enduring antisemitic slurs and created a schedule that works for their religious needs, as they observe the Sabbath, fasting days and Jewish holidays.

Forget the culture wars of today for a second. In the early '90s, one of the biggest political stories of the era was about a perceived pop culture war –- one that involved America's then vice-president and a fictional TV character. George H.W. Bush's vice president Dan Quayle seemed to almost single-handedly keep the media cycle in business thanks to a number of high profile verbal gaffes, which only seemed to escalate ahead of the 1992 presidential election. He famously spelled potato wrong during a children's spelling bee appearance on the campaign trail (a gag that turned up in an episode of "The Simpsons"), and earlier in the administration had misattributed the Holocaust to America, But none of his statements put him on the spot quite like the time he messed with "Murphy Brown."
"Murphy Brown" may not have a pop culture stronghold these days –- the wildly popular...
