I’m going to tell you something that will instantly rattle a millennial body to its core: “Glee,” the Fox musical dramedy that became a phenomenon before becoming a dark cultural tale, premiered 15 years ago, on May 19, 2009.
To make you feel slightly better about the passage of time, that date is a bit of a cheat: Because Fox suspected it had an honest-to-goodness hit on its hands, the network premiered the first episode after the “American Idol” Season 8 finale in May, before beginning the full season a few months later in September.
Still, May 19 was the day the world first was re-reminded of the wonder of “Don’t Stop Believin,’” witnessed the instantly iconic combo of cringe and charisma that was Rachel Berry/Lea Michele, and considered the shocking declaration that someone could be both an athlete and a singer.
If you aren’t a recovering Gleek, one of the...

The "Glee" cast and crew recently reunited in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. On Aug. 23, stars including Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Kevin McHale, as well as writers, producers, and choreographers for the hit television series joined the picket line in Burbank, CA. Marching alongside former coworkers, the group made sure to include a special shoutout to the late Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the show and died after a tragic boating accident in July 2020.
At the protests, a few of the picketers carried signage displaying famous one-liners from "Glee." Morris's sign featured Santana and her quote, "The only straight I am is straight-up broke," while former crew member Meg Doyle held up another screen grab of Santana saying, "I'm about to go all Lima Heights." Ushkowitz's sign also showed a snap of her character Tina Cohen-Chang saying, "I'm dehydrated from all the striking.

“The Price of Glee”, a three-part limited documentary, is pulling back the curtain on the cultural phenomenon that was “Glee”.
When the high school musical series from Ryan Murphy first debuted in 2009, it quickly broke down barriers, set records and changed the music and TV industry. It also made super stars out of its ensemble cast, including Cory Monteith, Mark Salling and Naya Rivera, whose lives were eventually cut short in very different, very tragic ways, leaving a dark cloud looming over the series that became rocked by scandals, gossip and more.
In the series, which premieres Monday, Jan. 16 on ID and discovery+, relatives and friends of the “Glee” cast, including Rivera’s father George and Monteith’s roommate Justin Neill, as well as those who were on set or covered the production during its six-season run, are speaking out.

Ryan Murphy’s Glee was an inexplicable phenomenon in its early years. A darkly comedic musical series set in a high school glee club didn’t sound like it would pull nearly 10 million viewers an episode, but the show was a runaway success for Fox from the start.
In the decade since it debuted, however, Glee has had a tumultuous public image. The show’s quality burnt out fast, trying to keep up with what was popular on the radio as well as what the fans wanted from the series and its characters.

Naya Rivera is being remembered on her birthday by her Glee co-star and friend Heather Morris. Rivera would have turned 36 years old on Thursday. Posting on Instagram stories, the 35-year-old actress, dancer, model, and mother of two posted the sweet tribute to her late friend. The post is white text on a somber black background and reads, “Happy Birthday, bebe. Today is hard. Missing you everyday, but today especially.” (Credit: Heather Morris via Instagram) Rivera died in July 2020 after she had been reported missing following a boating trip with her son, who was 4 years old during the excursion. Her body was discovered after authorities conducted a days-long search effort, and she had placed her son Josey back on the boat before she drowned. Josey told investigators his mother helped him onto the boat and then he looked back and saw her disappear into the water. She died at age 33. Rivera’s ex-husband,...

Ryan Dorsey has penned an emotional message, remembering his late ex-wife Naya Rivera on what would have been her 36th birthday.

The glut of shows being pulled from streaming services continues.
Starz has pulled a trio of titles – Dangerous Liaisons, Becoming Elizabeth and Step Up from its streaming service. All three titles have been canceled but it’s another example of a company taking finished shows off their own service.
It comes after HBO Max pulled series such as Westworld, The Nevers, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife as well as a slew of reality shows including FBoy Island and a raft of animated titles from its service last year.
Over the weekend, HBO Max also pulled a number of episodes of the original Looney Tunes, including seasons 16 to 31, as well as three seasons of The Flintstones. These shows were removed after their licenses expired.
The strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery was in part formed by tax write offs that it could gain after the merger, as well as interest...

Starz has canceled the “Step Up’ series after just one season on the network, Variety has confirmed.
Produced by Lionsgate TV, the first two seasons of the show were released on YouTube. Starz revived the show in 2020 after it was left in limbo when YouTube took a step back from producing original scripted content. At the time, news of the move seemed a sensible transition considering that Lionsgate is Starz’ parent company.
According to the series description, the musical drama followed the students and faculty of High Water, “an incubator for new artistic talent where founder Sage Odom (Ne-yo) and his partner Collette Jones (Christina Milian) struggle to maintain their empire.”
In Season 3, viewers witnessed Sage, Colette and their relationship challenged as they faced criminal charges, financial ruin, and powerful political enemies who wanted to destroy Sage and High Water. The Season 3 finale, which will now serve as the series finale,...

Exclusive: There will be no fourth season of Step Up (fka Step Up: High Water). Starz has canceled the drama series after its one-season run on the network. The upcoming Season 3 finale, slated to premiere next week, serving as a series finale.
The first two seasons of the Lionsgate TV TV-produced Step Up ran on YouTube. After the Google-owned company in 2019 pulled out of the original scripted business, leaving the series in limbo, Lionsgate-owned Starz stepped in and picked it up for a third season.
The cancellation of Step Up follows Starz’s cancellation yesterday of another Lionsgate TV-produced series, Dangerous Liaisons, reversing its early Season 2 renewal.
Lionsgate has been scrutinizing its balance sheets as the company is preparing to spin off its studio from Starz next year though sources indicated that the cancellations are largely product of fiscal austerity in a very tough economic environment as media companies are stepping up cost-cutting measures.

Glee star Kevin McHale is not interested in ID Discovery's docuseries The Price of Glee.
The actor took to social media late last week after a Twitter user shared an article about the docuseries that said "key" cast members would appear.

“This was the nice version, [for the record]. Don’t make me speak on this again," the star said in a follow-up tweet.
A trailer for The Price of Glee dropped last week. The first footage for the three-part limited series delved into the deaths of cast members Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, and Mark Salling.
“In May 2009, 10 young actors made their TV debut on ‘Glee,'” the clip for the event teased.

Heather Morris is opening up about her eating disorder, and how her late “Glee” co-star, Naya Rivera, came to her aid.
In a new appearance on the “And That’s What You Really Missed” podcast Thursday, hosted by her former co-stars Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale, Morris recalled a particular occasion in which Rivera followed her into her dressing room to confront her.
“I had developed an eating disorder. I stopped getting my period. I was so in my head about food and what it was doing for me,” Morris shared, noting that things escalated when the success of the Fox musical comedy led to a concert tour in 2010. While she didn’t specify her eating order, Morris said that she would often look at the food being served to her cast on tour but not eat — something Rivera noticed.

Ryan Murphy has suggested that Glee may have been on the air for too long, with the death of Cory Monteith being the most opportune time to conclude.
Murphy recently sat down for an interview on the podcast “And That’s What You Really Missed”. On the episode, Ryan Murphy reflected on the history of Glee, particularly the show’s run and how it probably should have ended following the untimely death of Cory Monteith. “If I had to do it again, we would’ve stopped for a very long time and probably not come back… I would be like, ‘That’s the end.’… Because you can’t really recover from something like that… It wasn’t, like, a normal death where someone is sick, and you can see them. It happened so quickly with no warning.”

Is Ryan Murphy ready to return to “Glee”?
The Emmy winner and showrunner behind Netflix’s “The Watcher” and controversial serial killer anthology series “Monster” revealed that he is tempted to revisit the beloved musical series.
“I’m at the phase now with that show, you know, where it’s like, well, there’s been enough time. Like, maybe we should really re-examine it as a brand,” Murphy said on the “And That’s What You Really Missed” podcast (via ScreenRant). “You know, should we do a reboot of it in some way? Should we do a Broadway musical of it in some way?”
Murphy continued, “Like, it’s sort of like an interesting legacy that I’m interested in doing in a positive way after sort of pausing for a while. But I don’t know. I just love what it says and what it did. And there will...

Some movies and shows have such troubled and problematic cast members that it’s almost too hard to go back and rewatch. One such show is Fox’s Glee. Now, Discovery+ has announced that they will release a docuseries about the many controversies surrounding smash TV series Glee.
Deadline recounts numerous controversies around Glee, the most famous being the death of Cory Monteith, who was found dead from a heroin overdose in 2013 not long before production on season five was set to begin. His character, Finn Hudson, was killed off; Monteith was honored in the season’s third episode.
Monteith’s girlfriend, Lea Michele (glee club superstar Rachel), was later accused of bullying by co-star Samantha Marie Ware, who had a short run in the final season as classmate Jane.
Other notable instances the child pornography arrest and 2018 suicide of Mark Salling, who played jock Puck, and the accidental drowning...
