Denzel Washington has two war films opening for Christmas — one written by a certain Will Shakespeare about a fellow named Macbeth in which Washington plays the title role, and another which he directed only. The latter, A Journal for Jordan, is Washington’s fourth outing behind the camera and is as sincere and unquestioningly patriotic as anything made during the 1940s.
In this sense, it’s an odd and oddly timed film, one that emerges at a moment when the world is far more preoccupied by the danger of a global pandemic than by a misguided war — the one in Iraq — that most Americans would just as soon forget, if, indeed, they haven’t already. The chemistry between stars Michael B. Jordan, playing a very hunky straight arrow, and his vibrant co-star Chantá Adams sets things percolating from time to time, but this is a film that asks no questions...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive tracks from Marcelo Zarvos’ A Journal for Jordan score, which is set for release tomorrow via Sony Music Masterworks—ahead of the Sony Pictures title’s release in theaters on December 25.
The latest film directed by two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is based on the true story of First Sergeant Charles Monroe King (Michael B. Jordan), a soldier deployed to Iraq who begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son. Back at home, senior New York Times editor Dana Canedy (Chanté Adams) revisits the story of her unlikely, life-altering relationship with King and his enduring devotion to her and their child.
The romantic drama scripted by Virgil Williams marked Zarvos’ second collaboration with Washington, on the heels of his Oscar-winning August Wilson adaptation, Fences. The composer says that for this “story about love, sacrifice and family that spans 20 years,...

“It wasn’t what I was expecting” is perhaps the cheapest piece of criticism that can be lobbed at a work of art, but in the case of, oh, a fact-based melodrama that pulls from both a) real life and b) the memoir written about it, some basic expectations are inevitable. Denzel Washington’s “A Journal for Jordan” certainly has a straightforward enough premise — per its own synopsis, it’s “based on the true story of First Sergeant Charles Monroe King (Michael B. Jordan) a soldier deployed to Iraq who begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son” — but the end result is that audiences might worry they’ve stepped into the wrong theater. No, it’s not what you’re expecting, and what it is isn’t very good, either.

"Always be courageous in everything you do, but never be afraid to cry." Sony Pics has revealed a second official trailer for A Journal for Jordan, the latest film directed by actor Denzel Washington following Fences. We posted the first trailer not too long ago and it doesn't look so good. Based on the true story of a soldier deployed to Iraq who keeps a journal of love and advice for his infant son. He finishes the journal before he is killed in action. The film spends time with Charles and Dana as they fall in love and discuss life, but also seems to imagine him still around her after he's gone, too. A Journal for Jordan stars Michael B. Jordan as Charles, and Chanté Adams as Dana, with Tamara Tunie, Robert Wisdom, Vanessa Aspillaga, and Jalon Christian. Opening in theaters exclusively on Christmas Day later this year. This is...
