Following the box office success of Batman Forever, Warner Bros. greenlit another sequel with Joel Schumacher returning as director. Val Kilmer was initially set to reprise his role but ultimately declined, citing his commitment to The Saint. It was later revealed that Kilmer and Schumacher had a strained working relationship, which may have been the real reason behind Kilmer’s decision.
George Clooney stepped in to replace Kilmer for Batman & Robin, marking Clooney’s first and, fortunately, his only major appearance as Batman (excluding any special cameos). The film also starred Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, delivering what many consider one of the worst comic book performances ever.
While Schwarzenegger’s portrayal was widely criticized and the character poorly written, his costume remains memorable. Though not accurate to the comics, it stood out enough to warrant this report dedicated to examining the iconic suit.

Due to the box office success of Batman Forever, Warner Bros. ordered another sequel with Joel Schumacher returning as director. Val Kilmer was supposed to reprise his role, but he eventually declined, citing his engagement in the movie The Saint as a reason. Still, it was revealed that Schumacher and Kilmer had a difficult working relationship, which was supposedly the real reason why he declined to return.
This is when George Clooney stepped in, replacing Kilmer for the movie Batman & Robin, which was his first and, thankfully, last appearance (except you know which – I won’t spoil it) in the role. The movie featured Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze in what is considered to be one of the worst comic book performances of all time.
Schwarzenegger was a mismatch for the role and the character was horribly written, which absolutely ruined one of Batman’s greatest villains.

If there was a decade that truly helped to shape the future of the crime thriller genre, it was undoubtedly the 1990s. The era churned out numerous movies that have become the benchmark for how to craft a movie about the hunt for a serial killer, or flashing femme fatales with a penchant for murder. Movies such as The Silence of the Lambs, Misery, Se7en and Basic Instinct set a benchmark for not only quality in the crime flick, but also by delivering iconic sequences that are synonymous within the genre. Lambs had Anthony Hopkins’ wonderful Chianti sipping performance, Misery gleefully smashed ankles, Se7en had the tragic head in a box scene, while Basic Instinct allowed Sharon Stone to show more than just her acting ability. The point is, by the time the movie we’re focusing on in this episode was released in 1999, audiences had preconceived expectations, thanks...

With blockbusters like Top Gun (1986) and Tombstone (1993) under his belt, when Val Kilmer was approached with the offer to play the fan-favorite character Batman in Joel Schumacher’s 1995 movie Batman Forever, the actor accepted the part without even reading the script. There have been several actors who have portrayed the hit DC hero, Batman, in different live-action projects. While some left an indelible mark on the character, others were not as well received. But Val Kilmer’s portrayal of the titular character is one of the most underrated portrayals of the Dark Knight.

Alec Mills, who served as a camera operator on five James Bond films before graduating to cinematographer on the Timothy Dalton-starring The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, has died. He was 91.
Mills died Monday, his son, Simon Mills, announced. He battled dementia and was living in an assisted care home in Denham, Buckinghamshire, England, he said.

After enjoying significant success on the small screen – hello Roger Moore! – the TV series The Saint made the jump to blockbuster cinema in the back end of the 1990s. That was when Val Kilmer took on the role of Simon Templar, the career choice given at the time for him exiting what became Batman & Robin.
Phillip Noyce directed The Saint, but plans for a big screen franchise were muted by the less than stellar box office receipts, and the lack of a bunch of people at Paramount Pictures clamouring for a sequel.
Still, as properties such as The Equalizer have more elegantly turned into cinema hits, so a fresh take on The Saint has been bubbling along for a while. At one stage, as he told this very outlet,...

It’s been a hot minute since we heard an update about an upcoming remake of The Saint starring Regé-Jean Page. Still, Deadline is here to blow the dust off this project with word that Doug Liman is officially directing The Saint remake. In addition to his starring role, Page will executive produce with Lorenzo Dibonaventura, Brad Krevoy, and the late Robert Evans.
Plot details for The Saint remake remain a mystery. However, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani are working on the script. The Saint is based on the 1920s book series that follows Simon Templar, also known as The Saint. Often described as a Robin Hood-like criminal and thief for hire, Simon can usually be found traveling the globe and looking for adventure. As I said, plot details on the new project are confidential at this time, though sources indicate that the team is working around the clock to reimagine the character.

Paramount has signed “The Bourne Identity” filmmaker Doug Liman to direct the upcoming crime thriller “The Saint,” which will star Regé-Jean Page in a new imagining of the 1920s book series created by Leslie Charteris.

‘The Saint Of Second Chances’ Review: Brilliant Netflix Documentary About A Failing Man’s Redemption
It wouldn’t be wrong of me to say Netflix’s greatest strength is the way they tell real-life stories. Their latest documentary, The Saint of Second Chances, is not only another glorious testament to that; it is probably one of the best documentaries to come out of Netflix yet. The selling point about the documentary is its accessibility. Whether you are a fan of baseball or not, you are bound to enjoy this Jeff Malmberg and Morgan Neville-directed documentary. It is extremely entertaining, very engaging, and brilliantly made from the start to the finish.
Every baseball aficionado probably knows about the infamous “Disco Demolition”, which happened way back on July 12, 1979. It was the brainchild of Mike Veeck, who was in charge of the PR and promotional activities of the Chicago White Sox. The idea seemed like a brilliant one in terms of bringing in the bucks from a full-house stadium,...

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

Actors often go to great lengths to prepare for roles, whether it be changing their body shape or dyeing their hair. Regé-Jean Page is no exception to this rule. The Bridgerton star has been in the spotlight for quite a while now and was even recently named “The most handsome man in the world” by the New York Post. His career has soared to new levels, and now he is opening up about a serious issue. Let’s talk about just how Page got his rear in shape for his role in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Born in 1990 in London, Page became interested in acting at a young age. After studying at the National Youth Theatre, Rotten Tomatoes reports that the handsome actor appeared in several theatrical performances before going on to attend the prestigious Drama Centre London. In a 2020 interview with the New York Times Magazine, actor Val Kilmer acknowledged his unfortunate reputation for being "difficult." Although possessed of movie star good looks, handily backed up by a great deal of talent and devotion to his craft, Kilmer often found himself butting heads with executives and studio honchos over his perceived ego. He admitted that had "alienated the head of every major studio," but only out of an attempt to empower actors and directors over studios, and, in his words, "attempt to breathe Suzukian life into a myriad of Hollywood moments." He further confessed as much in Ting Poo's and Leo Scott's 2021 biographical documentary "Val," when he admitted to behaving poorly. He then amended that more accurate adverbs might be "bizarrely" and "brazenly."
But for years, Kilmer couldn't shake his rep. Many stories of Kilmer's bad behavior notoriously came from the utter clusterf*** that was John Frankenheimer...

The history of Batman on film is well established at this point. Aside from his 1966 outing, we've had the Tim Burton era, the age of Joel Schumacher, the Christopher Nolan trilogy, and most recently, Matt Reeves' "The Batman." But things could have looked very different. Once Tim Burton's 1992 sequel and "weird experiment," "Batman Returns" proved successful, the director prepared to helm the next entry in the franchise. As he recounted in a making-of featurette, he actually met with Warner Bros. and pitched them his idea for a third film, before recognizing the lack of enthusiasm among the studio execs and saying, "You don't want me to make another one, do you?"
Burton was right. Warners didn't want him to make another one — especially since he'd upset the very demographic they and the toy companies were trying to target. Instead, the studio brought in Joel Schumacher to direct 1995's "Batman Forever,...

If you're a Batman fan who spends any time online, you'll no doubt have come across debates over the "definitive Batman." When Matt Reeves' "The Batman" debuted in 2022, the internet was abuzz with fans claiming we'd finally got a Batman who was true to the character's more grounded origins. But almost 20 years prior, when "Batman Begins" debuted, fan sites celebrated Christopher Nolan's 2005 depiction of the Caped Crusader as the ultimate grounded vision. Even we at /Film have attempted some, nicely nuanced if I may say, interjections in this arena, arguing why "Batman: The Animated Series" is the definitive incarnation of the Dark Knight.
At this point, I think we should all agree that there is no definitive Batman. These legendary pop culture figures have lasting appeal precisely because they lend themselves to multiple interpretations. Whether it's James Bond or Superman, we continue to come back to these characters because...

To begin to understand the byzantine nature of Mexican culture, look no further than the town of Tulancingo, home to Mesoamerican pyramids built in 1000 B.C. and the statue of El Santo erected in 1985.

HBO has secured another ratings hit with their new video game adaptation “The Last of Us,” and while it’s as exciting and epic as the original video game, it also has the distinction of having a Latino leading man. Chilean actor Pedro Pascal plays the protagonist Joel, who is tasked with trekking across the horrific landscape to help find a cure with young Ellie in tow.
With a Latino actor leading such a massive hit for the horror genre, it got us thinking about other great Latino Horror Heroes from pop culture. Here are five of our favorites.

Sean Connery in the role of James Bond is the very definition of a tough act to follow. Most actors who have the good fortune to portray a character on screen for the first time become associated with that character by default, but Connery did more than perfectly portray novelist and creator Ian Fleming's British spy — he defined the character completely, turning Bond into an icon.
Connery was rakishly handsome, effortlessly charming, and devilishly witty while also being able to tap into 007's coldness. His performance did the heavy lifting in explaining how a man with a license to kill is able to operate on a daily basis, and slyly offset the kitschy tone of the films by giving a grounded darkness to the character. When Connery briefly exited the role, Eon Productions recast Bond with George Lazenby, who was only afforded one at-bat in 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Val Kilmer grew up a Batman fan. He recalled to The Hollywood Reporter how he got to sit in the Batmobile as a second grader when his father took him to the set of the TV series in the '60s. So, when director Joel Schumacher tapped him to replace Michael Keaton as the titular superhero for 1995's "Batman Forever," it was a childhood dream come true. Kilmer would be paired with stars such as Jim Carrey as an unhinged Riddler, Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face and Nicole Kidman as Bruce Wayne's love interest, Dr. Chase Meridian. For Kilmer, the dream quickly became a nightmare.
In the '90s, the "Top Gun" actor had developed a reputation for being difficult to work with, so much so that in '96 Entertainment Weekly devoted an entire piece detailing his erratic behavior on film sets titled "Val Kilmer Makes Enemies in Hollywood." Hollywood...

Tributes have been pouring in after Palmer’s death.
“Baby Driver” director Edgar Wright tweeted a reference to Palmer’s role in “Reginald Perrin”: “The flight path gag wiping out the lines of Reggie Perrin’s brother-in-law is one of my favourite running gags in comedy.

We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.
For you romance lovers out there, meanwhile, Australia and Four Weddings and A Funeral drop the same day, and family audiences can enjoy Cats & Dogs,...

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!
