Tim Burton says it was like Michael Keaton was "possessed by a demon" when he reprised his role as Beetlejuice. The 72-year-old Hollywood star is returning to the iconic role for the upcoming sequel to the 1988 horror comedy, 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice', and the director and his co-stars found it surreal how he jumped right back into his alter ego like it was yesterday after 36 years. The 'Edward Scissorhands' filmmaker told Empire magazine: “It was like he was possessed by a demon, because he just went right back into it.Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz) said: “It was insane. Insane.” Jenna Ortega (Astrid Deetz) chimed in: “It was like an animal with a gun had just walked into the room. To watch him physically change and appear and Michael Keaton to be gone, and for me to be dealing with this Beetlejuice guy…It blew my mind.”The 'Jack Frost...

David Barrington Holt, who established and ran the first Creature Shop on the West Coast for The Jim Henson Company during his two-plus decades with the firm, has died. He was 78.
Holt died March 13 of complications from cancer at his home in Los Angeles, his son, Chris Holt, announced.
Holt started out with the Henson Co. in 1986 as deputy supervisor of its Creature Shop in the U.K. and was promoted to creative supervisor. He moved to Los Angeles in 1993 to set up a Creature Shop and produce the 1991-94 Disney-abc series Dinosaurs.
In L.A., Holt had creative oversight of shop operations including puppetry, animatronics, effects, performers, administrative matters and R&d, with developments in the field of real-time 3D CG animation.
He was instrumental in the creation of the Henson Performance Control System, which allowed a single performer to operate complex, computer-driven puppets in the same manner as though they were physical.

As temperatures plummet and blankets of snow envelop the landscape, winter horror movies become the perfect escape for those seeking thrills intertwined with the frosty air. Within this chilly realm, we find a particular sub-genre that harmonizes the starkness of winter with the dread of the cold-blooded killer – figures defined by their emotionless, relentless pursuit of victims, often leaving a trail as chilling as the season itself. These ruthless antagonists embody the essence of winter horror movies, their actions mirroring the merciless bite of the colder months.
From snowy suspense to icy massacres, let’s explore the top films where the winter season and heartless homicidal villains provide a double dose of fright.
20th Century Studios 10. Maniac Cop 2 (1990)

All Jack Frost Films Ever Made(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Santa Claus is and will always be the face of Yuletide. He’s an old, polite, white-bearded man who gives everyone gifts; what’s not to love there? So, it is safe to say no one can replace the good old Santa Claus. However, there are some Christmas figures that do not nearly get as much love from the world as Santa, despite being as interesting, if not more, than Father Christmas. One such character is Jack Frost.
While technically not a ‘Christmas figure,’ Jack Frost has always been associated with the festival. He’s essentially the face of winter, the personification of cold, and the guy who gives everyone the frosty fingers and snowed-in days. The first recorded mention of Jack Frost in literature was in 1734 in a book called “Round About Our Coal Fire, or Christmas Entertainments.”

An inverted Christmas tree with as many missed opportunities as you’d find toppled ornaments, “It’s a Wonderful Knife” begins where most slashers end. Our final girl dispatches and unmasks the killer in just a cool 15 minutes before a title card announces the cutlery pun-turned-feature film in earnest. It’s then that director Tyler MacIntyre really gets to work, reimagining the black-and-white holiday classic from 1946 as a middling 2023 slasher satire doomed to fade from memory with the calendar year.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Natasha Henstridge of the first two Species movies and John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars, among other credits, has signed on to star in Cinderella’s Revenge, which gives the classic fairy tale a horror twist. Filming is already underway in the UK, with Andy Edwards (Zombie Spring Breakers) directing for Sobini Films.
Starring Lauren Staerck (Curse of Jack Frost) as Cinderella, this take on the fairy tale will show us what happens when Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters and stepmother push her too far, leading her to swap her glass slippers in pursuit of blood-soaked vengeance with the help of her Fairy Godmother.
My immediate assumption was that Henstridge would be playing the wicked stepmother, but she’s actually taking on the role of the Fairy Godmother.

The Christmas season is advertised as a time for "peace on earth" and "goodwill toward men," but for a lot of us, the holidays are little more than a headache and a half. It's hard not to feel like such a Grinch this time of year when everyone else seems to be filled with joy, but fortunately, there are movies to help us anti-sentimentality Scrooges feel a little less alone. We've talked before on /Film about some of the best alternative Christmas movies (that aren't "Die Hard"), but we've never broken down why these films are so important. I might be acting overdramatic by calling these films "non-sentimental," as there's plenty of sentiment to be found in any story (as long as you know where to look), but I think we can all agree that the sentiment of something like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" is in stark contrast to Bob Clark's "Black Christmas.

Whether they teach us lessons about responsible mischief or protecting the environment, the whimsical stories of famed children's author Dr. Seuss were built to last. His characters, most of whom share an impeccable disposition for rhyming, exist in a fantastical world of make-believe, where traditional lessons become adventures. Of Seuss' many, many characters, few are as ingrained into the pop culture zeitgeist than that of the Grinch. Given what time of year it is, you've likely heard the famous Thurl Ravenscroft song plenty of times already.

A headline in last Tuesday’s Hollywood Reporter stated: “Phyllis Carlyle, Influential Talent Manager and Producer, Dies at 80.” For those who worked with Phyllis, this description is somewhat simplistic.
There are many successful female managers today. In the late 1980s and early ’90s, there were very few.
From 1990 to 1993, I was Phyllis’ assistant. That she died this September of leukemia, but the news came out two and a half months later, reminded me of the famous Beatles lyric, “Eleanor Rigby, died in a church and was buried along with her name. Nobody came.”
Phyllis was the first person in the business who believed in me. I had just graduated from AFI. I didn’t want to be a manager, but I did want to learn how to navigate the industry. Mastering how to handle the non-stop agenda of her workday was sturdy preparation...

Paul Coker Jr., whose character and production designs for the classic Rankin/Bass stop-motion and animated holiday specials and his many years as one of Mad magazine’s “Usual Gang Of Idiots” endeared him to generations of fans, died following a brief illness at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on July 23. He was 93.
His death was confirmed to Deadline by his stepdaughter Lee Smithson Burd. “Paul was lucid and had his remarkable sense of humor until the end,” Smithson Burd said.

Exclusive: Kino Lorber has acquired worldwide rights to Afrofuturist sci-fi punk musical Neptune Frost, co-directed by poet, musician and actor Saul Williams and playwright-director Anisia Uzeyman.
The film had its world premiere last summer in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival before screening at Toronto and NYFF during the fall. Neptune Frost was recently invited to screen in Sundance’s selective Spotlight section. Actor Ezra Miller, theater producer Stephen Hendel and Lin-Manuel Miranda are among the film’s producers.
The film takes place amid the hilltops of Burundi, where a collective of computer hackers emerges from a mining community, the result of a romance between a miner and an intersex runaway. Set between states of being—past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience—Neptune Frost is a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.

Do you feel that chill in the air? Winter has once again descended to encase us in her cold, deathly embrace. But, of course, winter does not come alone. She brings with her a golem made from the very snow she produces to freeze us down to our bones. This avatar mocks us by shaping itself in a distorted facsimile of the human form cobbled together with coal, carrots, and despair. I refer, of course, to the snowman, the ultimate bodhisattva of the season of death.
Human beings often try to make sense of life’s horrors through story, and in the late ’90s not one, but two films dared plunge the depths of the uncanny dread induced by snowmen. And such was the terrifying nature of both films that they each earned the title Jack Frost.

Joseph Cross to Direct Movie Adaptation of Louise Candlish’s Novel ‘The Other Passenger’ (Exclusive)
Louise Candlish’s best-selling novel “The Other Passenger” is getting the feature film treatment.
Actor-turned-director Joseph Cross has nabbed film rights and plans to direct the movie adaptation. Cross will also produce the film through his company, Moving Image Productions, alongside Lucas Evans. No actors are attached yet.
Candlish’s book, which is a hit in the U.K., will be published in the United States in July 2021 by Simon & Schuster. The logline for the book reads: “Rocked by a traumatic incident on the commuter train, Jamie travels to work by river bus with his younger neighbor Kit. It’s the lifestyle change he badly needs — until the morning Kit doesn’t show up for the boat and Jamie is met at his stop by the police. Kit’s wife Melia has reported him missing and the police say another passenger saw Kit and Jamie arguing on the boat home the night before.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Billy Dee Williams, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and more in today's daily Link Tank!
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will further reveal the backstory of John Boyega's Finn.
Rey’s origins might be the biggest mystery in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but Finn is almost as much of a blank slate. When we first met John Boyega’s character in The Force Awakens he was “Fn-2187,” a stormtrooper on the run from the First Order, and that’s pretty much all we ever learned about him. Now, it turns out Episode IX will fill in the blanks of Finn’s traumatic past, though fans of the video game Star Wars: Battlefront II may already know most of the sordid details.

Star Wars actor Billy Dee Williams revealed that he is gender neutral in an interview.

The trailer suggests Michael Fassbender’s Jo Nesbø adaptation is a high-tension, dread-laden thriller with one problem: it’s full of snowmen
The Snowman, which is due for release in October, absolutely drips with pedigree. It’s based on a Jo Nesbø thriller about a serial killer with a disturbingly unique calling card: he leaves snowmen next to his victims. Originally due to be directed by Martin Scorsese, it’s a movie from film-maker Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) that stars Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Jk Simmons, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Toby Jones, with a score composed by Jonny Greenwood. The message is clear: this is a serious film made by serious people. As its new trailer demonstrates, The Snowman is intended to be taken very seriously indeed.
That said, it’s got loads of snowmen in it. Loads of them. Which is a risk,...

Over the last several years, Michael Keaton has enjoyed a career renaissance, rising from the trappings of second-rate family films and thrillers (like Jack Frost or Herbie: Fully Loaded) like a majestic phoenix from the ashes. His wings were once clipped, but now he soars, picking off critically acclaimed acting roles like a bird of prey.
The avian similes are fitting because of Keaton’s winged character choices as of late, such as in Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) — which scored the actor an Oscar nomination — and now the Vulture in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Across these two...

Kevin Spacey turns into a cat. Christopher Walken. We take a closer look at the Kafka-esque comedy, Nine Lives..
“When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from troubled dreams, he found himself changed into a monstrous cockroach in his bed.”
See related Nintendo Famicom Mini: examining Japan's tiny console
So goes the first line in Franz Kafka’s classic short story, Metamorphosis - a tiny, existential drama subject to all kinds of interpretations since its publication in 1915. Even that famous opening line is open to interpretation, as this Guardian piece points out: did Kafka really mean that poor, unfortunate Gregor woke up as a cockroach, another kind of insect, or something else entirely? The German phrase he uses, “Ungeheuren Ungeziefer” loosely translates to “enormous vermin.”
Whatever Gregor becomes, it’s something pitiful and helpless; he can no longer work, and gradually, he’s shunned by his own family.

Refuse to take a killer snowman seriously at your own risk! Jack Frost went straight to VHS in 1997 and has established quite the cult reputation. On a routine prisoner transport, a massive car accident results in a serial killer, Jack Frost (Scott MacDonald), being genetically mutated into a ravenous mutant killer snowman who runs around stalking a small, isolated town during a snowstorm. Traveling with the snowdrifts, Jack seeks a revenge on the local sheriff who ended his first long reign of terror. His new rampage leaves a trail of (often hilarious) murders in his wake.

[Originally appeared in the December 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] ’Tis the season to be nicer, more forgiving and charitable toward those less fortunate. Keeping these ideals in mind, this month is the perfect opportunity to celebrate my favorite terrible (but so terrible that I can’t help but love it) holiday film of all-time: Santa’s Slay.
Directed by David Steiman (who has yet to helm another film since—poor guy), Santa’s Slay stars Bill Goldberg as a murderous Kris Kringle. He returns to the sleepy town of Hell Township with revenge on his mind, after being forced to be nice to children for a thousand years when he lost a bet with an angel a millennium ago. There’s a bit of Santa-related mythology thrown in, but what makes Santa’s Slay worthwhile is all the over-the-top raucous action and pitch-black humor.

Donald Trump vs. Starbucks' War on Christmas. The War on Christmas: The movies that come to mind We're still in November, but the War on Christmas – according to online buzz, a second cousin once removed of the War on Cops – has begun. Weeping and gritting of teeth has seized certain population segments in the U.S.A. (and perhaps other countries as well) after Fox News, that beacon of intellectual freedom at the end of the cable news tunnel, announced that … Starbucks' holiday season cups are a) red b) devoid of Christmas decorations. Could it be a satanic conspiracy disguised as politically correct inclusiveness? The result of a communist takeover at the Seattle-headquartered company? Cruel and unusual Christian persecution in the form of paper cups? Your guess is as good as mine. Far-right Republican icon, U.S. presidential candidate, and 2015 political circus ringmaster Donald Trump seems to think that Starbucks...

Donning the cape and tights to play a big screen superhero was often seen as career suicide for actors. This idea is mined to brilliant effect in Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman, with a former comic book star looking to relaunch his career with an ambitious Broadway play.
Adding extra spice to Birdman is the casting of Michael Keaton, himself a former Batman whose post-tights career has been somewhat hit and miss. This film, however, is a stunning reminder of just how good an actor Keaton is and proof that careers don't end when on-screen superpowers fade away.

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

In his new form, Jack makes his way back to the town of Snowmanton (yes, really) to kill the Sheriff Tiler (Christopher Allport) that arrested him.

Honestly, we wish visions of sugar plums danced in our heads, because every December we are haunted. The holiday season is a spooky time! Naughty lists, lumps of coal, made-for-tv movies starring Rob Lowe—when you think, about it there are a lot of yuletide messages of "don't mess up or you'll be wrapped in chains and/or burned." Sure, there is lots of merriment too, but let's take a moment to recognize the frightening side of these fearful festivities. And please don't take this as an excuse to insult your mother's fruitcake, because a Grim Reaper ghost will probably call you out on it. 1. The Santa Clause is 20 years old today—and while the series spawned a trilogy of family-friendly holiday films, we can't forget the franchise's dark origins. Tim Allen's Scott Calvin becomes Santa Claus by accidentally causing the original St. Nick to fall to his doom. Sure, the film pushes a "seeing is believing" message and includes plenty of warm and fuzzy holiday cheer—but it still starts off with the death of Santa Claus. The Santa Clause isn't the only movie to put a dark spin on the holiday season; there's a long and storied cinematic history of strange, bleak,...

Even though Kevin Smith already announced he’d be directing his own Christmas horror anthology Anti-Klaus, originally titled Comes The Krampus, Legendary has decided one movie about the hellish Bizzaro Santa Claus wasn’t enough – so they greenlit their own! Yup, throwing their hat into the holiday horror ring, Trick ‘R Treat director Michael Dougherty has been tapped to direct Krampus, a “a twisted horror comedy” said to be reminiscent of Dougherty’s Halloween anthology Trick ‘R Treat.
Dougherty has been hired to direct and co-write the project along with scribes Todd Casey and Zach Shields, a decision that will surely upset Trick ‘R Treat fans who have been patiently waiting for their long-teased sequel. While it was announced back in October that Dougherty would in fact be writing and directing Trick ‘R Treat 2, his involvement with Krampus is sure to push back any sequel work he’d previously planned.

This afternoon at 2.50pm we shall see how Channel 5 copes with the profane, graphic, sexual antics of Tim Burton's cult film
• Michael Keaton to return in Beetlejuice sequel with Tim Burton
"Let's turn on the juice and see what shakes loose" – Beetlejuice
Today, Channel 5 is broadcasting a timely showing of Tim Burton's 1988 classic Beetlejuice. Why so timely? Because just last week its star Michael Keaton suggested that Burton was keen on the idea of a sequel. All of which makes this the perfect time to assess whether or not Beetlejuice 2 needs to happen. Or at least it would, were Channel 5 not broadcasting it in the middle of the day. This is Beetlejuice, after all – scary, sweary, faintly graphic, prostitute-starring Beetlejuice. It might have been turned into a cartoon at one point but, still, Beetlejuice is a little too adult for Channel 5's Jumanji slot, isn't it?
So who...

So who...

This is another edition of Short Starts, where we present a weekly short film(s) from the start of a filmmaker or actor’s career. Whatever your feelings are about the new RoboCop remake, there’s no denying that it’s great to see Michael Keaton up on the big screen again with such a prominent role. The actor hasn’t been in a lot of movies over the past decade, and in those he has done he’s mostly played some young starlet’s father. Or he’s merely provided his voice for a few minor Pixar characters. And now in 2014 alone we get to see him stand out in three movies, including RoboCop, next month’s Need for Speed and, best of all, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman, in which he’ll star, reflexively, as a washed-up actor best known for having portrayed a superhero in the movies. If...

Will finally begins to suspect that people are … hiding stuff from him.
Harder, Ari!
It’s a Tad day! And he’s looking good. And here comes Will … and so does he. Is Tad rubbing off on Will? Aside from in fanfic.
Gabi is having a Flashback Nightmare. Wow, two for the price of one. She wakes up screaming, But luckily Sonny is there with his calming plaid. It soothes everything.
Ej is taking a hike down by the river, and he orders Sami to go with him. He’s wearing … jeans … and an … outdoorsey jacket, and he’s carrying … sport moccasins. And he’s got scruff. If he grows an ugly, scraggly beard and starts talking about “sin,” i’m done with this show.
Will is talking to Tad about the secret he thinks Gabi and Sonny are keeping from him. Tad tells him maybe the surprise party is back on,...

While snowmen were once the source of much happiness for me, that all changed with a childhood viewing of the movie Jack Frost. In an instant, the magic and joy was replaced with sheer terror and icy cold chills, which still run up my spin to this day.
Oh, and I'm not talking about the 1997 horror movie Jack Frost. I'm of course talking about the other one, where Michael Keaton dies and then comes back to life as his son's snowman. Chills, I tell you. Chills.
Ever since the winter of 2011, it's become an annual holiday tradition for a man named Brian to dress up as a particularly evil looking snowman and terrorize the busy streets of Boston, whispering creepy things at passersby and jumping out to scare them. They think his clever costume is merely a harmless decoration, you see, and Brian has a whole lot of fun with that.

What do punk rock, a Washington Post reporter and books have in common?
For the most part, nothing -- except for books by Washington Post reporters about punk rock.
That's exactly what "Hard Art, DC 1979" is -- a book featuring photos from four concerts during the early days of the District's hardcord punk scene taken in, you guessed it, 1979.
The photos were taken by Lucian Perkins, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist at The Washington Post, and the book also includes essays by D.C. rockers Alec MacKaye, the younger brother of Fugazi's Ian MacKaye, and Henry Rollins, who may be more famous for his acting than his musical chops (he's appeared in the films "Jack Frost" and "Jackass The Movie," among others).
Perkins was only an intern at The Washington Post when he began snapping photos of D.C. punk bands performing at small venues across the city. MacKaye...

Moviefone's New Release of the Week "Life of Pi" What's It About? The best-selling novel about Pi, a 16-year-old boy who survives a shipwreck and is stranded in the ocean with a hyena, orangutan, wounded zebra, and Bengal tiger, is finally brought to the screen by Ang Lee. See It Because: While an ambitious undertaking, Lee's masterful storytelling and spellbinding cinematography made believers out of even the most devout "Pi" fans -- and it's easy to see why Lee and the movie's visual artists were rewarded with heaps of Oscars. Watch Ang Lee talk about working with a real tiger, in an exclusive clip from "Life of Pi" (video at the top of this post). Moviefone's Blu-ray of the Week "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" 25th Anniversary Edition What's It About? Disney's landmark Hollywood noir -- set in 1940s "Toon Town" -- is just as madcap and amazing to watch now...

When we first saw the trailer for Dreamworks' new animated epic "Rise of the Guardians" and beheld the nondenominational team-up of Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman and Jack Frost, we wondered how on God's green earth this had never been done before.
It turns out all the ingredients were right there for an "Avengers"-style franchise crossover movie and, just to rub it in the studios' faces, we've assembled a first-class poster mock-up by Old Red Jalopy to prove it.
As you can see, they could have had Tim Allen of Disney's "Santa Clause" franchise leading the way along with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson from 2010's "The Tooth Fairy," Michael Keaton of 1998's nightmarish family film bomb "Jack Frost," Thomas Haden Church as Sandman from 2007's "Spider-Man 3" and Anna Faris as our favorite Playboy centerfold, "The House Bunny."
You can probably imagine the billions in merchandising revenue...
