Kacey Musgraves, the esteemed Grammy-winning country singer, is celebrating her fifth studio album Deeper Wells with a tour by the same name, which commenced its journey on April 28 in Dublin, Ireland.
Hailing from the heartland of Texas and launching her career in Nashville in 2013, Musgraves made an indelible mark with her major-label debut album, Same Trailer Different Park, which garnered a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. What distinguishes Musgraves within the world of country music is her whimsical playfulness and tongue-in-cheek flamboyance.
When Musgraves burst onto the scene with her album Same Trailer, Different Park, she married a country tone with progressive lyrics, unafraid to delve into topics such as recreational drug use and casual encounters.
As Musgraves embarks on her Deeper Wells World Tour, she continues to redefine the boundaries of country music as an unapologetic trailblazer.

For the fourth year in a row, the Ambie Awards celebrated the brightest creators in the world of podcasting. On March 26, drag queen Trixie Mattel hosted a lively ceremony that honored the best audio shows across 27 categories.
The Ambies are overseen and voted on by the Podcast Academy, a group that was established just a few months before the inaugural Ambies in 2020. The show has added a handful of new categories since then and has kept pace with a podcasting industry that has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. “You all look so gorgeous which is why you excel in a medium where no one can see you,” said Mattel, a former Streamy Awards co-host, at the start of the 2024 Ambies.

For seven seasons, “Veep” painted a portrait of the Washington elite as unflattering as it was accurate. Our nation’s capital, the satire argued, is filled with neither dedicated public servants nor savvy political operators, but bumbling sycophants whose self-importance far outstrips their actual abilities. “White House Plumbers,” the new HBO limited series, extends that argument from fictional characters to actual history. Created by “Veep” writers Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory and directed by David Mandel, the “Seinfeld” alum who ran “Veep” after the departure of Armando Iannucci, “White House Plumbers” charts the awkward bromance of two men who tried and failed to break into the Watergate Hotel. The result is a shotgun marriage of “Step Brothers” and “Slow Burn.”

MGM+ has greenlit “Hollywood Black,” a new docuseries directed by Justin Simien.
Based on the book by historian Donald Bogle, this four-part docuseries tells the epic story of the actors, writers, directors and producers who fought for their place on the page, behind the camera, on the screen and in the credits. It is a definitive chronicle of a century of the Black experience in Hollywood, and a powerful reexamination of a quintessentially American story — in brilliant color.
“Hollywood, like many American industries, was built on Black culture and Black talent, even though it excluded Black people from many of its origin stories,” Simien said in a statement. “This series seeks to illuminate present-day controversies, from #OscarSoWhite to the almost regular ‘blackface reveal’ of prominent white celebrities, told through the lens of Black individuals throughout Hollywood history. It’s the most important story I’ve been able to tell to date,...

The top-to-bottom rebrand of Epix into MGM+ under Amazon’s ownership means an increase in not only scripted series but also documentary content.
R.J. Cutler’s “Murf the Surf: Jewels, Jesus and Mayhem in the USA” is the first of five docuseries that will stream on the new platform in 2023.
About Jack Roland Murphy, an infamous jewel thief turned murderer, “Murf the Surf” was commissioned by Epix three years ago after Imagine Documentaries’ president Sara Bernstein and her former co-president Justin Wilkes pitched the story to Michael Wright, former president of Epix and current head of MGM+. It’s been 50 years since the Watergate scandal broke — but thanks to today’s television landscape, it’s still part of the conversation. With a dozen films and TV shows made about the political scandal, writer Robbie Pickering set out to tell a different story with Starz’s “Gaslit” — the one of Martha Mitchell, the wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general John N. Mitchell and the first person to publicly speak out about the former president’s role in Watergate.
But heading into the topic was a heavy lift. Pickering, who is part of Variety’s Virtual TV Fest taking place June 7-9, has been obsessed with the topic for years — even more so when he listened to Slate’s “Slow Burn” podcast. Still, he felt there was still something new to tell.

“Gaslit” kicks off Sunday night on Starz, showcasing lesser known stories from those around the Watergate scandal, including outspoken whistleblower Martha Mitchell, the wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general-turned-campaign manager John Mitchell.
The drama, starring Julia Roberts as Martha and Sean Penn as John, comes from executive producer Robbie Pickering (“Mr. Robot”), who told TheWrap he had been wanting to do a story set in the Nixon era for quite some time.
“I always wanted to do a show about the culture around Nixon, and nobody was really interested for many, many years,” Pickering said. “[For] about 10 or 12 years, I tried to pitch a show like that. Then, just when I’m going to give up, the podcast ‘Slow Burn’ comes along and really centers [on] Martha Mitchell, who I knew about.

In Starz’s new Gaslit, premiering Sunday, central Watergate figure John Dean is played by Dan Stevens. In White House Plumbers, an upcoming HBO limited series, Dean is portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. And in The Last Witness: Watergate, an upcoming four-part CNN original series, Dean himself will “confront his own involvement in the biggest presidential scandal of the 20th century,” in the words of the network.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Watergate complex, the “third-rate burglary” that brought down a presidency, Hollywood is still mining the scandal for storylines, drawing on new perspectives and points of view even as many of the central figures have long passed, the notorious aspects of Watergate have faded in memory, and D.C. has been gripped by so many other moments of abuse of power that are arguably of far more consequence. (Note: January 6).

Dan Stevens decided not to sit down with John Dean, Republican lawyer in the Watergate era turned news pundit and circuit speaker, ahead of playing him in the Starz drama Gaslit.
Stevens has told the British press that he was initially keen to sit down with Dean, who still polarises opinion for his role in the Nixon-period scandal, but the actor changed his mind once word got out of the planned meeting.
“I was keen to sit down with him,” Stevens told the Guardian. “Then I was told I’d have to speak with Universal’s lawyers in advance, which I didn’t want to do; I didn’t think it would make the meal taste particularly nice.”
Stevens stars alongside Julia Roberts and an unrecognisable Sean Penn in the five-part series, based on the ‘Slow Burn’ podcast, which tells the story of Watergate, but from the fresh perspective of...

This was the response when the actor famously left Downton Abbey at its height, fearful of being typecast as a floppy-haired aristo. Now based in LA, he’s starring in everything from comedy and horror to a new series about Watergate
Dan Stevens knew little about Watergate before being cast in Gaslit, a new prestige drama about the 1970s American scandal that toppled a president and shook America. The 39-year-old actor, of early Downton Abbey fame, might now be sitting in his very own Los Angeles garden but, as with many Brits, his knowledge of the affair extended only to the most superficial stuff. “I knew it spawned the gate-suffix,” says Stevens, over Zoom. He’s wearing a jazzy Paul Smith shirt, behind him lush leaves and that Hollywood sunshine. “But you quickly realise there’s a universality to that stupid level of corruption. Many of us know parts of the story of President Richard Nixon’s fall from grace, leading to his 1974 resignation. Two years before, Nixon’s paranoid streak had led to greenlighting the 1972 so-called White House Plumbers break-in at Democratic Party offices in DC’s posh Watergate Hotel, orchestrated by Attorney General John Mitchell. As a tween, I watched the political scandal unfurl on the nightly news over family dinners, with my outraged lefty father screaming at the TV and broadcaster “Uncle” Walter Cronkite while we booed Nixon alongside him. But, as I picked my way through adolescence, I didn’t know the epic details of the story “Gaslit” reveals.
Based on the first season of Leon Neyfakh’s granular “Slow Burn” podcast, with “Mr. Robot’s” Robbie Pickering as showrunner, the eight-part limited series flips the script. It puts Mitchell’s wife Martha at its center and reexamines the scandal...

This week we’ve got a ton of brand-new content, from a prestige Apple TV+ thriller featuring a time traveling serial killer to the real-life tales of Watergate, Navalny, the Holocaust, and the making of “The Godfather.” Plus, we say goodbye to the longest-running Netflix original comedy series. As you can tell, this is a lot!
On with the television!

“Shining Girls,” based on the novel by South African author Lauren Beukes, has an ingenious premise. Jamie Bell plays a time-traveling serial killer who targets special young women (the “shining girls” of the title). In the 1980s, he leaves one girl standing, who then decides to hunt him down. Of course, that girl is Elisabeth Moss, who through roles on “Mad Men,” “Top of the Lake” and “Handmaid’s Tale”, has become one of the most exciting and emotionally acute performers working today.

“Gaslit” has a funny way of recalling a dark moment in American history. It takes a step back and asks: what if Watergate was more of a Coen brothers farce than the tense, paranoid ‘70s thrillers that came after it? That air of absurdity, of eccentric morons making plans that were far from airtight, introduces the amusing disgust of this story. Playing with historical events in an intimate lens (and based on the Slate podcast “Slow Burn”), “Gaslit” wonders what it might be like if complicit Attorney General John Mitchell just left his espionage checklist on the bedside for his wife Martha Mitchell to see, or that when the involved criminals were questioned by authorities, most of them clammed up like pre-teens caught smoking.

The first problem for Starz’s new series “Gaslit” may be in its title.
Sure, to “gaslight,” as a verb, has its origins in the 1944 film (and its earlier stage source material), all about a woman whose husband, insistent on his falsehoods, leads her to question her sanity. But its contemporary usage, as a slang term with a meaning that has drifted closer to simply “lying,” might not be how a woman in the 1970s would understand a case of marital dishonesty.
Which is not to say that Martha Mitchell, the character Julia Roberts plays here, doesn’t have a keen understanding of just what she’s up against. Martha, the real-life wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general John Mitchell, is depicted by Roberts as at once puckishly witty and as not immune to dramatizing her already dramatic circumstances. “Gaslit,” which takes a broad view of the political players...

The story of the Watergate scandal under President Richard Nixon has been told time and time again but never from this perspective. Starz’s “Gaslit” is told from the perspective of Martha Mitchell, the wife of Nixon’s Attorney General, John N. Mitchell. She was also the first person to publicly speak out about Nixon’s involvement in Watergate.
“I’ve always written southern conservative women. It’s my favorite thing, because I’m writing the church ladies I grew up with and I love them and I hate them,” creator Robbie Pickering told Variety at the world premiere at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday. “I had the world’s most worn-out VHS copy of ‘Steel Magnolias.’ Julia Roberts as Shelby!”
Roberts was at the top of the list to play Martha and Pickering admitted he “couldn’t believe” she agreed. Then came the part of John Mitchell.

“Malum in se.”
In “Gaslit,” as explained by G. Gordon Liddy, Malum in se is a Latin phrase that means “an act of evil in and of itself” — something easily recognized as wrong, no matter the framework. It works in opposition to “Malum prohibitum,” which speaks to an act that violates the laws of man. Maybe it’s not obviously illegal, but society still deems it as such. Liddy, a loyal soldier of President Richard M. Nixon, believes that the leaders who wrote these laws were thus right and good; that, as the strongest men, they had the right to shape history as they see fit; that everyone else should follow their will, for they were the purest and most righteous among us.
Sound familiar? Even before accusations of fascism were being hurled across Twitter, they were being shouted at bars, during protests, and anywhere else Americans felt it was...

“Gaslit,” the upcoming Starz limited series about Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), who blew the whistle on her husband John Mitchell (Sean Penn), Richard Nixon’s attorney general, won’t tell the same familiar story about the Watergate scandal, showrunner Robbie Pickering says.
Instead, Pickering’s goal is to “correct the record.”
“I have a 4-and-a-half-year-old daughter and I don’t want her to learn about Watergate in the same way that I learned about it,” Pickering said Wednesday during a Television Critics Association panel. “I want her to know that Martha Mitchell played an instrumental role in it, and she wasn’t just some drunk crazy lady. She was right. She was the first person to publicly blow the whistle on these people. Hopefully, we can correct the record a little bit with this show.”

We just had to do a double–take. On Feb. 2, Starz released the first teaser for their new series Gaslit, and we almost didn't recognize Sean Penn. In the drama series—which premieres April 24 and is based on the first season of the Slow Burn podcast by Leon Neyfakh—Penn stars as Richard Nixon's loyal Attorney General, John Mitchell. The teaser features a fully transformed Penn, who sports a receding hairline and a large stature. Gaslit, starring Penn, Julia Roberts, Dan Stevens and Betty Gilpin, is "a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten character of the scandal—from Nixon's bumbling, opportunistic subordinates, to the...

‘Gaslit’ Trailer: Julia Roberts Joins a Very Different Looking Sean Penn as Watergate Whistleblowers
The truth will set you free — if you’re willing to be undermined and called crazy for speaking out.
The first trailer for Starz drama series “Gaslit” shows Julia Roberts transformed into Arkansas socialite Martha Mitchell, who publicly accused President Richard Nixon of being behind the Watergate break-in. Martha’s determination to uncover the Watergate conspiracy jeopardizes the career of her husband, Attorney General John Mitchell, played by an unrecognizable Sean Penn. Accused of being “paranoid” as a “woman of a certain age,” the gaslighting only works to light a fire underneath her even more…
Premiering April 24 on Starz, “Gaslit” is based on the “insane but shockingly true story” that was featured in a first season episode of Slate’s award-winning podcast “Slow Burn.” Watch the trailer below.
“In ‘Gaslit,’ we not only have the opportunity to tell an incredible untold story in bringing Martha Mitchell’s historic role in Watergate to the forefront,...
