To understand this story, you have to first know that there is a streaming service called MGM+. I don't think I've ever met a single person who subscribes to MGM+, which may explain why some of its programming is being canceled. TV Line reports that neither The Winter King nor Beacon 23 will be returning for additional seasons.
The Winter King ran for one 10-episodes season last year. I watched it because I'm a big fan of the books it's based on: Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles, a novel trilogy about the life of King Arthur filtered through Cornwell's prodigious gift for grounded historical fiction.
By and the large, the series disappointed me. It was a spotty adaptation of Cornwell's books, and I can't imagine it exciting newcomers. I'm sad that the show wasn't better — I would have settled for longer-lived, cause there's some great stuff from the books...

On the Pilot TV podcast this week we’re dancing with dragons as two of the stars of House Of The Dragon join us on the show ahead of the Game Of Thrones spin-off's Season 2 premiere. We sent along our very own Master of Whispers Boyd Hilton to sit down for a chat with Matt Smith and Fabien Frankel, aka Prince Daemon Targaryen and master swordsman (in every sense of the word) Ser Criston Cole [approx 24:55 - 38:32]. Together they talk the *great* episode they can't talk about, speculative spin-offs, and, er, Richard Madeley.

Lena Headey made the first season of Beacon 23 quite bearable, and her absence was felt throughout season 2. It seemed like season 2 was repeating the same things over and over again, up to the point that it became irritating. I mean, there wasn’t a single thing in the entirety of the second season that was worth our time. Milan’s AI, Aleph, was repeating the same dialogue like a broken record. Harmony, on the other hand, had been the struggling AI since the beginning, with a messy character transformation in the end that doesn’t make any sense. And Halan Kai Nelson is still down with his Ptsd, the symptoms of which started to appear more in the viewers than the character itself. I am glad Beacon 23 season 2 ended, and I will surely elaborate on its finale in the best possible manner I can.

Canadian actor-brothers Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) had their stars unveiled on Scarborough’s Walk of Fame. The men were raised in the marginalized Toronto community by a single mother who emigrated to Canada from Jamaica.
“It’s really humbling and flattering to receive something like this in my hometown, at a mall where I grew up, where I shopped, it’s pretty cool,” Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter.
The local Walk of Fame honor for the fast-rising Hollywood stars is more than an exercise in collective positive thinking for an inner-city neighborhood that earlier brought to the world celebrities like Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and The Weeknd.
The brothers are at work via their Bay Mills Studios production banner — named after the community housing project they grew up in Scarborough — on a landmark TV drama set in the inner-city community that is their home away from Hollywood.

Amazon is looking to increase the amount of streaming ads it offers, and its streaming platform MGM+ could be next to see ads invade its interface.
As streaming services go, MGM+ tends to skate under the radar a bit. The streamer is owned by Amazon, but is typically an afterthought when discussing that company’s other streaming platforms like Prime Video, Freevee and even Twitch. In fact, during Amazon’s conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss its quarterly earnings report, MGM+ was not even mentioned by Amazon executives. Nevertheless, subscribers would be smart to anticipate big changes to the streamer in the near future, specifically in its decision to thus far not to include ads on the platform.
Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky told analysts his company wants to increase advertising in its streaming properties. Prime Video converted all customers to ad-supported unless they pay to go ad-free on Jan.

MGM+ has officially confirmed season two of the sci-fi thriller Beacon 23 will air on the streaming service. The series was originally set up with Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks, and a second season had already been ordered prior to season one’s premiere on MGM+ on November 12, 2023.
Seasons one and two were filmed back-to-back, but Spectrum Originals shut down in 2022 before season one aired. MGM+ snatched up the series, and their announcement confirms fans of the show based on Hugh Howey’s bestseller will return to the world of Beacon 23 in April 2024.
Zak Penn (Ready Player One) created the series and serves as an executive producer. Glen Mazzara (Damien) and Joy Blake (The Passage) are co-showrunners on the eight-episode second season and executive produce.
“Beacon 23‘s season two ups the game: more action, more mysteries, more twists, and exciting new characters,” said Glen Mazzara. “It’s a thrill ride.

In the previous episode of Beacon 23, Keir entered the space station with his two other terrorist accomplices, Saldana and Finch, to take over Beacon and find the artifact. Halan left the space station, boarding Amboyna, while Keir tried to use Aster to understand the true purpose of the artifact. Even though Finch and Saldana didn’t trust Keir, he knew that Aster was the key to this mysterious artifact, and probably by communicating with the relics, Aster would end up being a messiah to save humanity. Bart, unable to recall his previous data, which had been deleted by Solomon, decided to kill himself. In the end, Bart realized that, despite being an AI, he would always be under the control of human beings, which prompted him to make a tragic decision. MGM+ has renewed sci-fi mystery thriller series Beacon 23 for a second season. The eight-episode season 2 will premiere on the streaming service in April. The news is not a surprise. The series already had been renewed by Spectrum and AMC, where it originally had been greenlit, and MGM+ is now formally committing to air it.
Starring Stephan James and Lena Headey in Season 1, Beacon 23, based on the best-selling book by Hugh Howey, is created and executive produced by Zak Penn.

In Season Two, Beacon 23 is now little more than a prison with Aleph onboard, and The Artifact provides more questions than answers.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Beacon 23 Season 1 finale.] Did Beacon 23 just kill off Aster (Lena Headey)?! It certainly looked that way in the finale, but remember what we seen from her all season. In the finale, Aster decides she’ll go into the artifact and receive the message that she’ll share with everyone — humans and AI — and Halan (Stephan James) agrees to join her, for 24 hours and that’s it. But Keir (Marc Menchaca) says he can’t let her do that and shoots her. Is she dead? Or will her connection to the mysterious artifact that has drawn in quite a few people save her? “I will just say that I know the audience is going to have questions about, is Aster really dead? Those questions will be answered in a Season 2, if we run Season 2,” executive producer Glen Mazzara told TV Insider. “But one of the things that is fun about making the show,...

In the sixth episode of Beacon 23, the origin story of Beacon 23 introduced us to Dr. Ree Avalon, the first beacon keeper and the one who gave Bartholomew the nickname Bart. Avalon was the first human from Earth to see the artifact, created by the space silicates swimming around a light. Avalon tried to unravel the mystery surrounding the artifact, which caused her severe hallucinations. It even led Avalon to leave the space station to embark on a journey into infinite space to decode the source of this miracle. However, Avalon lost her life in the process. After Avalon, when a couple became the keepers of Beacon 23, they accidentally became pregnant and chose to give birth to the child, keeping it a secret from Isa. This child, named Parsim, grew up to be Aster Calyx, whose parents had to escape from the space station in order to evade the capture of Isa.

Director James Gunn has been named PETA’s 2023 Person of the Year. Per the animal rights organization, Gunn has been selected “for using impressive and stunningly well-crafted CGI animals to inspire tens of millions of moviegoers—who flocked to theaters to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’—to have compassion for the millions of animals killed by experimenters in laboratories.”
The third installment of “Guardians of the Galaxy” explains Rocket Raccoon’s origin story as a test subject in a lab, alongside other animals.
“By telling the story of the millions of vulnerable animals abused in experiments, James Gunn has shown himself to be a true animal guardian,” says PETA president Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is delighted to honor him for encouraging exactly what the world needs: empathy for all living beings.”

In the third episode of Beacon 23, we saw Halan being attacked by another Qta agent, Coley, who was Aster’s former lover. To save Halan, Aster killed Coley. After that, episode 4 surprisingly brought some new characters into the narrative, introducing us to one of the first Beacon keepers, Sophie, and the creator of Beacon, Milan Aleph. In the third episode of Beacon 23, we witnessed another death in Beacon. An official of Qta, Coley, who had sneaked into Beacon in search of the precious space minerals, was eventually stabbed by her colleague/lover Aster. The episode concluded with Aster saving Halan’s life, leaving us hoping that we will see their budding romance or friendship in future episodes.
