Indenting because I didn't close table

[edit]

I found that I was causing problems when I didn't use "</div>". In fact, I needed to add "|}" like you said. I knew there was something else but I never asked. I won't be going back and fixing all those templates that now end with "</div>", but if I can fix the ones I have posted recently, I will. Thanks again.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:24, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what templates to which you are referring. Are you referring to a page in the Template namespace, or a page in any namespace that you are transcluding using {{page name}}? If so, it would be a good idea to ensure that it properly closes any <div> elements and any tables. isaacl (talk) 02:27, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
... and it would be nice if you would fix up any missing closing tags or table characters in comments you left on user talk pages, particularly for new editors, who are even more likely than you to not be able to figure out what happened. isaacl (talk) 02:42, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just didn't know because somehow I copied the template incorrectly. See here. And what I had been doing wasn't enough, it turned out.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 16:16, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm aware of the conversation in which I responded to you. I don't know how you made this edit. Did you enter {{subst:some template name|some parameters}}? If so, then the template {{some template name}} should balance all opening and closing tags, as well as opening and closing table characters. Did you copy and paste the wikitext from somewhere else and make modifications? Typically, to avoid confusion with pages in the Template namespace, it's better not to call this a template. In either case, it would be nice if you would fix any issues you created on other user talk pages, since they're probably also confused about what happened. isaacl (talk) 16:27, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would be nice, but it would be too hard to go back in my contributions and find all the cases where I used this particular template. To answer the question about why I found one problem and not the other, I had to go back a year. Fortunately, it's mostly IPs and others who never come back and never get any other messages. My goal is to get caught up and immediately notify these IPs if no one else does or they don't respond after asking a Teahouse question.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:54, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I didn't ask any questions about why you found any problems. My apologies; I can't give any more guidance without knowing what you did to place that text on the user talk page, as I don't know if there is a page in the template namespace, or some other page that is generally used via transclusion, that needs to be fixed. Best of luck in not leaving elements unclosed on any page. isaacl (talk) 21:52, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I was just letting you know what my problem was before, and that you told me how to solve it. My other solution may have been needed but didn't work. There was a bot and I was trying to copy what the bot did, but someone forgot to keep the bot working. I know if I'm new to a site and I don't know how to get back to where I asked for advice, I'd like someone to help me.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:57, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just find it curious that you tried to answer a question I didn't ask, but didn't try to answer any of the questions I did. But that's all right. Happy editing! isaacl (talk) 22:01, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to answer the question, but all I remember is I copied the text posted by a bot and replaced its signature with mine. Somewhere I messed up.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 15:52, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The bot probably transcluded a page from the Template namespace (or possibly a subpage of the Teahouse page?) using the {{subst:...}} syntax. It would be better for you to do the same, since the template presumably is properly closing all elements. You can try doing a search of the Template namespace for some of the text in the message box to find out which template was being used, or perhaps even easier, just ask someone at the Teahouse talk page. isaacl (talk) 16:39, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replying here regarding the first editor, as I know recognition distribution is one of your favourite Wikipedia tasks: to me, preparing the recognition text and infobox is the time-consuming aspect of the process. So personally that's where I'd seek assistance if I wanted to share the workload. But as the defacto person in charge of the process, it's pretty much up to you—if you like doing the prep work and just need help with delivery and maintenance updates (hall of fame and list of recipients), you could farm that aspect out. I found the task of finding interesting images tricky; I enjoyed the writing (which is my forte). isaacl (talk) 16:39, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
