Etymology 1

[edit]

From Late Proto-Vietic *-haːm, from Proto-Vietic *tŋ-ʔaːm, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *[t₁]ʔaam. Cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] hɐːm², Chut [Rục] təŋʔaːm¹, Halang tơ'am (molar tooth), Pacoh tang-am (back teeth; bottom molars), Danau ʔɑm¹.

Insertion of initial *h in Vietic can also be seen in *huːɲ (to kiss) (> Vietnamese hôn), *heːt (finished) (> Vietnamese hết), *hanʔ (he, she, it) (> Vietnamese hắn), *haːr (two) (> Vietnamese hai), *hoːj (foul-smelling) (> Vietnamese hôi), *hɔːŋʔ (river, brook), *haːŋʔ (to open (mouth)).

Not derived from Chinese (MC homX), OC *[ɢ]ˤ[ə]mʔ (B-S), in spite of the similar SV reading hạm.
