Borrowed from Middle Low German herkomst, herkumpst. Compare similarly borrowed ankomst (“arrival”) and tillkomst (“coming into existence, creation”). The second element -komst is from Proto-Germanic *kumþiz, but is not a native Swedish formation, rather a borrowing of the Middle Low German suffix. The native Swedish descendant of *kumþiz would be -kund.
