Os Cetotheriidae (cetotéridos) son unha familia de baleas da suborde Mysticeti (as que teñen na boca os filamentos chamados baleas ou barbas en vez de dentes).[1] Esta familia críase que existira desde o Oligoceno tardío ao Plistoceno temperán, cando se extinguiu. Porén, algúns estudos filoxenéticos dirixidos por Fordyce & Marx 2013 atoparon que a especie viva balea anana (Caperea marginata) forma parte tamén dos Cetotheriidae, polo que sería o único membro actual da familia; pero outros autores disputan esta clasificación ou consideran os Neobalaenidae como un grupo irmán de Cetotheriidae.
Taxonomía
[editar | editar a fonte]Despois da súa descrición por Brant en 1872, os Cetotheriidae foron utilizados como un caixón de xastre para as baleas misticetas que non se podían asignar ás familias de baleas hoxe existentes.[2]
Comparando a morfoloxía cranial e mandibular de 23 taxons (incluíndo os arqueocetos tardíos e os misticetos fósiles e actuais),[3] Bouetel & Muizon 2006 atoparon que os Cetotheriidae no seu senso tradicional eran polifiléticos. Baseándose en dez caracteres craniais, chegaron á conclusión de que dos doce misticetos fósiles con baleas na boca incluídos no grupo, seis formaban un grupo monofilético, os Cetotheriidae sensu stricto.[4]
Varios estudos filoxenéticos desde o de Bouetel & Muizon 2006 apoian a monofilia dun pequeno grupo central de Cetotheriidae sensu stricto, misticetos arcaicos cun cranio que ten "un longo proceso ascendente do maxilar con bordo lateral diverxente na parte anterior que se interdixita co frontal" e algúns outros caracteres.[5] Este grupo está limitado a Cetotherium rathkii, Metopocetus durinasus, Mixocetus elysius, Herpetocetus scaldiensis, H. transatlanticus, H. bramblei, Nannocetus eremus, e Piscobalaena nana.[6] Os restantes xéneros situados na familia son considerados Cetotheriidae sensu lato e adoitan denominarse os 'cetoteros' (cethoteres).[5]
Bisconti, Lambert & Bosselaers 2013 consideraron o primitivo 'cetotero' Joumocetus o taxon máis basal da súa nova superfamilia Thalassotherii (Cetotheriidae s.l., Cetotheriidae s.s., Eschrichtiidae (balea gris) e Balaenopteridae (rorcuais) e suxeriron que o termo "Cetotheriidae s.l." debería ser renomeado como "talasoterios basais" ou "troncais".[7] Fordyce & Marx 2013 atoparon que a balea anana formaba un clado ben establecido con Eschrichtiidae e Balaenopteridae baseándose en datos moleculares, e que, dentro dos 'cetoteros', está máis estreitamente relacionado cos herpetocetinos (Herpetocetus e Nannocetus).[8] Porén, Bisconti et al. 2013, encontraron que, baseándose en datos moleculares, estaba máis estreitamente relacionado con Balaenidae (as baleas de Groenlandia e francas), pero engadiu que se esperaba que espécimes adicionais resolvesen estes resultados conflitivos en poucos anos.[9]
