Choreographia (a Graecis χορεία 'saltatio rotunda'[1] + γραφή 'scriptura') est ars sequentiarum ballationiumque motuum designatarum in qua motus, forma, vel ambae subtiliter enumerantur. Vocabulum etiam ad designationem ipsam spectare potest itself. Choreographus est homo qui choreographias per artem choreographicam creat.

Choreography, vocabulum Anglicum 'choreographia' significans, primum in dictionario Anglico Americano annis 1960 apparuit.[2] Choreographer, etiam verbum Anglicum 'choreographus' significans, ut titulus Georgii Balanchine pro On Your Toes, spectaculo Broadway, anno 1936 primum adhibitum est.[3] Antea, credita pro ludis scaenicis et pelliculis locutiones adhibuerunt sicut "greges ab aliquo ad scaenam proditi,"[4][5] "saltationes ab aliquo ad scaenam proditae," [6][7] vel simpliciter "saltationes ab aliquo" ad significandum choreographum.[8]

Choreographia saltatoria etiam compositio saltatoria appellatur, et choreographis adhibetur in campis praeter saltationem, inter quos cheerleading, cinematographia, gymnastica, spectacula modae, patinatio, grex incedens, show choir, theatrum, natatio congrua, et productio ludorum videographicorum.
