CBS’ update on Matlock brought in a strong audience for its premiere on Sept. 22. The legal drama starring Kathy Bates — which shares a name and basic premise with the 1980s-90s series starring Andy Griffith, but not much else — brought in 7.73 million viewers for its debut. NBC Overtakes CBS
A big summer — and specifically, the Paris Olympics — helped NBC claim the 52-week ratings crown for the 2023-24 season, per data released Sept. 20. While CBS topped the September-May season, NBC averaged about 4.9 million primetime viewers for all of 2023-24, beating out the 4.7 million for CBS. ABC ranks third at 3.9 million viewers, while Fox averaged 2.8 million. NBC improved by 7 percent compared to the 2022-23 season, and ABC rose by 4 percent, while CBS (-6 percent) and Fox (-24 percent) declined. Among the key ad-sales demographic of adults 18-49, NBC led the 52-week season with a 0.72 rating, equivalent to about 950,000 viewers in that age range.

TV Use by Platform In August
Overall TV use rose by 8 percent from July to August, again fueled by the 14 days of Olympics coverage. Streaming (41 percent of all usage) and cable (26.3 percent) both declined by 0.4 points, and other TV use — including gaming and physical media playback — fell from 11.6 percent in July to 10.7 percent, according to Nielsen's latest Gauge report on Sept. 17.
