In Sunday’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the comic host delved into one of the main talking points having come out of this month’s presidential debate: that of the GOP ticket’s parroting of a baseless racist dog whistle regarding the Haitian immigrant community in Springfield, Ohio.
Oliver began the segment by playing Donald Trump’s much-memed and discussed clip where he falsely claimed that Haitians were eating pets, a notion that running mate Jd Vance had circulated (and since walked back) and that originated in neo-Nazi groups.
In playing a video of Vance discussing the discredited conspiracy theory, the VP candidate is seen mispronouncing the Caribbean nation as “Haitia.”
Not missing a beat, the talk show host quipped, “First, there is only one Haiti-related mispronunciation we recognize in this house, and it’s Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, delivering the iconic line: ‘And so...

When we think of monsters on this channel, most of the time its from a fictional, mythical, or legendary monster like the Mummy, Wolfman, Dracula, or Frankenstein’s Monster. On this specific show, however, a Monster can take on a whole new meaning. I joke that half of these episodes will be about reportedly true possessions and while that will probably hold fast, there is another type of monster we have discussed a few times. The guy that loosely inspired the Scream killings, Henry from Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and today’s subject Aileen Wuornos. The movie made about her is literally called Monster and put director Patty Jenkins and star Charlize Theron, at least in terms of her being seen as an A list actor who can actually act, on the map. It’s a straightforward telling of a murderer that of course adds nuance and even...

Selma Blair’s teen son Arthur has crossed a major first off his list: he’s finally watched one of his mom’s movie’s, something Blair told People she’s tried — and failed — to get him to do for years. Unfortunately, she added, the 13-year-old watched “Cruel Intentions.”
Blair explained, “I mean, I’ve tried, he’s never watched. But with a girl, he’ll watch ‘Cruel Intentions,’ and I was like, ‘Oh dear.'”
Arthur also mimicked an explicit gesture that her character performed in the movie. “He’s like, ‘Mom, what was that?’ Because my character Cecile does it. It was naughty. It was naughty, is my point.”
Ultimately, she continued, her son liked the film.
The 1999 teen drama also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon in a young adult retelling of the 1782 novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.” Phillippe played Sebastian Valmont, a New York...

Shailene Woodley has been tapped to play the rock icon Janis Joplin in a new biopic.
Variety reports that Woodley has joined the cast of the film and will produce as well. The yet-to-be-named biopic is being funded by a $2.5 million tax credit from the state of California’s Film Commission, and per Variety, will have a $10 million budget for “qualified expenditures.”
We don’t know much else about the film, but Woodley wrote in a statement that she’s excited to tell Joplin’s story in California specifically. “California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” she wrote.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: A new Janis Joplin biopic is in the works. And this time it’s Shailene Woodley who’s attached to play the legendary singer and musician.
The project was revealed — oddly enough — in a press release issued by the California Film Commission announcing which movies and TV shows would receive its coveted tax credits. As such, the details are pretty scant. Woodley is set to star and produce, and the production company backing the film is Temple Hill Entertainment, which has done the Twilight movies,...

Without hyperbole, Michael Patrick Jann ("The State") and Lona Williams' ("Sugar & Spice") mockumentary comedy film about a small-town Minnesota beauty pageant is my favorite comedy film, ever. As a former teenage Midwest beauty queen myself, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" speaks to me on a religious level. My blood is not red, it is Mount Rose, and I am an American Teen Princess Pageant girl for life. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. It's a shame because the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams (her debut role!), Alexandra Holden, Nora Dunn, Mo Gaffney, Will Sasso, Matt Malloy, Mike McShane, Mindy Sterling, Sam McMurray, and...

For those of us who have been here for a decade or two, it’s remarkable to consider both how much and how little the city of Los Angeles has changed over the years. There are still plenty of the old landmarks—the Hollywood Sign, Pink’s Hot Dogs, that dude who rollerblades around is white robes and plays guitar on the Venice boardwalk—while other, seemingly indestructible, institutions have tragically bitten the dust.
So! With local issues perpetually at the forefront of our mind this week, here now are ten films that remind us of life in Los Angeles during a very particular and only recently bygone era: the ’90s and early 2000s. These films are honest portrayals of what livin’ la vida loca LA-style is all about, whether they’re a glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, the realities of showbiz or struggles within SoCal’s toughest ‘hoods.

Elisabeth Moss has spilled some tea on the behind-the-scenes of the 1999 film Girl, Interrupted.
Moss starred alongside Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Brittany Murphy in the Oscar-winning drama about a women’s psychiatric facility.
The future Handmaid’s Tale actress was just 15 years old when she played Polly Clark, a teenager with schizophrenia who also has visible scarring from facial burns.
In an interview on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Moss said that the on-screen tension between characters meant that the cast naturally became divided when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“There were two kinds of camps. There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp,” she said. The divisions were “based on what was on camera.”
“I was in the Winona Ryder camp. The Angelina Jolie camp was really cool. I was intimidated by the Angelina Jolie camp. I had no thoughts of...

Elisabeth Moss fully committed to one of her earliest roles in Oscar-winning film “Girl, Interrupted.” So was the prosthetics team.
The future “Mad Men” star Moss was so unrecognizable in her prosthetics, even the film crew believed she was an actual burn victim, Moss said during the “Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa” podcast. In the 1999 film, a teenage Moss played Polly “Torch” Clark, a girl with schizophrenia who ended up with facial scars after getting caught in a fire.
Moss’s facial prosthetics would take “about three hours every morning,” she said. Due to how long the process took, Moss would wear the prosthetics even when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“I would forget that I had [the prosthetics] on,” she said. “You wouldn’t take it off at lunch or anything. I would go with [co-star] Winona [Ryder], because we became kind of good friends, I would go with...

In 2001, Anne Hathaway starred as Mia Thermopolis, heir to the throne and Princess of Genovia, in the American coming-of-age teen comedy film The Princess Diaries.
Her grandmother in the film, reigning Queen of Genovia Clarisse Renaldi, was played by Dame Julie Andrews.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] “As if!” It may be hard to believe it (especially if you just look at Paul Rudd), but it’s been 28 years since Clueless was released. The 1995 film (loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma) followed Cher (Alicia Silverstone), a shallow, rich, and socially successful high school student in Beverly Hills as she tried matchmaking those around her, to various results. Among them: new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) and the popular Elton (Jeremy Sisto). The only problem? He’s more interested in Cher… who’s busy falling for her ex-stepbrother Josh (Rudd). When Sisto stopped by TV Insider to talk about FBI this past spring, we had to ask him to look back on his audition for Clueless. “Initially, they had asked me to read for Josh,” he revealed. “I think I wanted to make fun of these rich kids, which I probably resented from my own childhood.

1999 is often considered one of the greatest years in Hollywood history. From "The Matrix" to "Fight Club," many films released that year remain important cultural touchstones. The 1990s was also one of the most prolific eras for independent filmmaking; the classics from this decade run the gamut from funny, to tragic, to downright strange. Those three words provide a succinct description of the 1999 classic "Girl, Interrupted," a film that still resonates today, especially with the younger generations of young women.
"Girl, Interrupted" is based on Susanna Kaysen's memoir of the same name, and follows an 18-year-old girl who checks herself into a psychiatric hospital in 1967. While there, Susanna (Winona Ryder) meets a group of eclectic women who make her question where insanity truly lies: inside the mental institution, or outside of its walls? Some of the brightest stars of the late '90s play Susanna's fellow residents, including Angelina Jolie...

Stacey Dash and Elisa Donovan from 1995’s Clueless are opening up about where they think their characters would be in a possible remake.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight at ’90s Con over the weekend, Dash said it “would be up to Amy [Heckerling, the original movie’s director]” as to whether the cast would get back together for another take on the ’90s staple.

Pink was once a frontrunner for the role of Janis Joplin in a biopic about the classic rock musician’s life. The pop star recently revealed why she thinks the movie was never made, despite countless attempts by various filmmakers over the last few decades.

All the way back in 2004, P!nk was slated to star in a Janis Joplin biopic from director Penelope Spheeris that never saw the light of day. So you can count on Howard Stern to get her reflecting on the contentious matter nearly 20 years later.
The project was tentatively titled “The Gospel According to Janis” and featured a years-in-the-making script co-written by Spheeris (“Wayne’s World”) and Brad Vanderburg. It would have marked P!nk’s screen acting debut in a starring role; when she was cast, Spheeris called it “the most gratifying moment in my film career.” So what happened?
With the gift of hindsight, the Grammy-winning singer in part blamed Hollywood sexism for why the project — and others like it — still hasn’t been made.
“I think that it’s a lot harder to get a biopic done about a female, that’s why we don’t have that many,...

Super Bowl commercials are often a haven of reunions and nostalgia grabs. In years past, they’ve seen the likes of Matthew Broderick return to play himself, similar to his famous Ferris Bueller character. Recently, Zach Galligan reunited with Gizmo for a commercial. Last night, Alicia Silverstone stepped back into her Cher attire for a Clueless tribute for a Super Bowl commercial for Rakuten, Deadline reports.
The Big Game TV Spot depicted Cher Horowitz in her former debate class, being interrupted by her rival, Amber, which sees Eliza Donovan back in the film role as well. The spot mirrors a similar scene in the 1995 Amy Heckerling comedy in which Cher gives a presentation in Mr. Hall’s debate class against the opposing party represented by Amber. In the twist for the TV spot, it’s not the same class, but a modern-day school class.

Now that Hulu is reviving King of the Hill for new episodes, it’s time to book a return ticket to Arlen. And we have 10 episodes to get you going! The original King of the Hill aired on Fox between 1997 and 2009 as viewers followed the hijinks of the Hill family — Hank Hill (Mike Judge) and Peggy Hill (Kathy Najimy), son Bobby (Pamela Adlon), and niece Luanne (Brittany Murphy) — and their friends and neighbors. And for the forthcoming revival, much of the King of the Hill voice cast is returning, with Judge and his co-creator Greg Daniels returning as executive producers alongside Saladin Patterson (The Wonder Years), who will also be a showrunner. If you’re yearning for a King of the Hill binge-watch before the show returns, the show’s original 13-season run is streaming on Hulu. Ashton Kutcher is shooting for a revival, it seems, reprising his role as Kelso for guest spots on That ‘90s Show and headlining his first movie in a decade. Out of the spotlight or under criticism, Kutcher maintains that his mantra is, “Invest in enduring happiness.”
Ashton Kutcher became an easy target as a doofy leading man in buddy comedies like Dude, Where’s My Car? and a series of rom-coms like Just Married (alongside Brittany Murphy), No Strings Attached (alongside Natalie Portman) and Valentine’s Day (alongside seemingly everybody). Even with dramatic turns, as in 2004’s The Butterfly Effect and 2013 biopic Jobs, Kutcher hasn’t exactly had a lot of praise thrown his way. Still, building off of his mantra and previous words of hope, it’s clear the actor is more of an inspiration that many might give him credit for.

Alicia Silverstone has returned to her film roots 27 years after Clueless hit theaters and changed the fashion world. In honor of Super Bowl Lvii, the shopping site Rakuten chose one of the 1995 film’s most iconic scenes to recreate in an ad. Not only did Alicia return to embody Cher Horowitz, but Elisa Donovan also donned her fashionable best to play Cher’s rival, Amber Mariens. Here are the details.

Clueless was a film that captured the essence of 1990s glam fashion. The New York Times wrote that grunge fashion dominated the industry during that period. This was replicated in the film by several characters, including Brittany Murphy’s Tai. The bright, bold colors worn by the lead female characters caused a sensation due to their take on a typical schoolgirl uniform, punched up a notch.

When it came to primetime adult animated sitcoms of the '90s and early '00s, "King of the Hill" was somewhat of an outlier. It was steeped in suburban realism, trusting the audience to find the humor in co-creator Mike Judge's observational, mundane sensibility. While the show's contemporaries like "Family Guy" or "The Simpsons" (which sparked competition with the show over its use of guest stars) embraced a cartoony wackiness, "King of the Hill" adopted a relaxed, comfortable tone. And who better to command that tone than a character like Hank Hill (Judge)?
For one thing, Hank was an unusual choice to lead a sitcom. Where "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" made a point of their lead patriarchs being very dumb and oblivious, Hank was smart and competent. Superficially, he probably looked a little boring, and there was little about Hank that would seem to lend itself to comedy.

King of the Hill is coming back to TV, thanks to a Hulu revival, with most of the original cast returning — but there’s one character who’s conspicuously missing.
Hank, Peggy, Bobby, Bill, Dale and Boomhauer will all be back and voiced by the same actors from the original 1997-2009 Fox run of the animated comedy. Hank’s niece Luanne is understandably absent, since Brittany Murphy tragically passed away in 2009. But Hank’s nemesis Kahn, the status-chasing Laotian dad who moved in next door, is nowhere to be found in the revival. And there’s an obvious reason why: Kahn was an Asian character,...

"King of the Hill" is coming back. TVLine reports that the much-loved Fox animated sitcom is returning with many key cast and crew members already on board, though this time it'll be with a series order on Hulu. Though the series originally ended in 2009 after 13 seasons, its new iteration will follow propane salesman Hank Hill (Mike Judge) and his family and neighbors in the present day.
In addition to co-creator and star Judge's return as both Hank and his mumbling friend Boomhauer, the series will also include Kathy Najimy's Peggy, Pamela Adlon's Bobby, Stephen Root's Bill, and Johnny Hardwick's Dale. Key castmate Toby Huss, who played Hank's belligerent father Cotton, is absent from the lineup, likely since Cotton finally kicked the bucket in the show's twelfth season. Huss, however, also voiced the Laotian character Kahn, so his absence from the initial cast list makes me wonder...

“King of the Hill” is officially returning. Hulu ordered a revival of the beloved Fox animated series.
Created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, “King of the Hill” is an animated sitcom about the Hills, a working-class family in the fictional town of Arlen, Texas, and their neighbors and friends. Judge led the voice cast of the original series, which ran from 1997 to 2009 on Fox for 13 seasons, as Hill family patriarch Hank. Other cast members included Kathy Najimy as Hank’s wife, Peggy, Stephen Root as their neighbor Bill, Pamela Adlon as their teen son Bobby, Johnny Hardwick as the local conspiracy theorist Dale, and Lauren Tom as Minh and her daughter Connie. Most of the original cast is expected to return for the revival; the main cast of the original series also included Brittany Murphy, who died in 2009, as the Hill’s niece Luanne.
