Jon Bernthal is getting the shit kicked out of him.

Premiering at Tiff 2017, Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me is the first major film documentary to examine Davis’ vast talent and his journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America.
Today Sammy Davis is seen primarily as part of The Rat Pack. That quartet of bad boys who sing and joke around is very much a part of time when Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were the kings of the Las Vegas scene.
But Sammy Davis Jr. was much more than that and merely by lending his black face to that group makes The Rat Pack seem like a liberal if slightly dissolute, but a filled-with-fun group. In truth, his position with Sinatra, Martin, Peter Lawford was not all that comfortable and the path Davis had already trod before landing there was not a simple or easy one.

Note: This piece was originally published on May 30, 2017, but in light of The Defenders hitting Netflix this Friday, we thought it had some thoughts worth reiterating.
Marvel and Netflix have created something truly special with their four superhero shows: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. They've established a unique, ongoing, and shared universe that not only respects each character's source material, but also builds upon and expands their lore. Fans have clearly responded, as many media outlets report that these are some of the most-popular shows on Netflix.
Daredevil is heading into its third season, while Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are each preparing for their second, but what about the fate of Iron Fist? According to SuperBroMovies, Danny Rand himself, actor Finn Jones, will soon issue a Season 2 announcement. While that's certainly welcome news for the whole Marvel/Netflix enterprise, it's probably safe to say that Iron Fist...

Demetrius Shipp Jr. looks a lot like Tupac Shakur. While in some circles that could be enough to recommend the first-time actor for the part of the beloved late rapper, it’s a casting choice indicative of much bigger issues in Benny Boom’s long-gestating biopic, “All Eyez on Me.” The casting choice suggests that a commitment to accuracy, but that doesn’t make up for many other shortcomings in a movie that does no favors to Tupac’s legacy.
Opening with a political urgency that belies a very different project, Boom’s film (penned by Jeremy Haft, Eddie Gonzalez, and Steven Bagatourian) initially reads as a timely rallying cry around Shakur’s legacy, before devolving into a paint-by-the-numbers biopic that unspools with as much energy as a Wikipedia entry. Framed in the most uninspiring way possible — with Hill Harper playing a journalist who visits Tupac in prison to reflect...

Loaded with eye-popping action sequences, cheeky humor and unexpected sweetness, the premiere of Preacher, based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, suggests that AMC’s supernatural dramedy just might turn out to be the best new show of the year. But we can debate that after you’ve worked your way through this recap and its reminders of how appealingly badass Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga were as the titular preacher, Jesse Custer, and his combustible old flame, Tulip O’Hare.

Praise be! AMC‘s Preacher (premiering Sunday, May 22, 10/9c) might be just the series that fans of The Walking Dead have been complaining for two years now that Fear the Walking Dead isn’t.
Based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, the sparky supernatural dramedy circles Jesse Custer (ultra-charismatic Dominic Cooper), a reformed bad boy around whose neck his clergyman’s collar fits like a noose. But he’s got no choice but to stick with the pulpit: He promised his ill-fated father that he’d grow up to be a good guy, “’cause there’s...

Some really cool news has come out of the Cartoon Network camp today. Variety announced that Cartoon Network's Adult Swim has some pretty awesome plans to ensure that their current, future, and past fan bases will all be entertained. One of the steps they are taking is to bring us new episodes of Samurai Jack. Earlier this year, Adult Swim announced the series revival would be coming, but this solidifies their plans, and there are a ton of other new announcements that Cn has revealed:

As a youngster, I once shook hands with Bushwhacker Luke at a house show, and was amazed to note that a) he expressed himself politely and without grunts, and b) I walked away completely un-licked. I wouldn’t discover the word “kayfabe” until years later, but that evening at the Forum, I first saw through it.
Up until then, I had bought into it completely, just the same as most kids. In terms of a watching fantasy and not knowing it, few things compared to being a young wrestling fan in the late 80’s; in those days, it was considered perfectly rational in the 10-and-under world that Hulk Hogan and Mike Tyson essentially had the same job.
Years after abandoning the notion of sentient stuffed animals and holiday home-invaders, this writer was still willing to believe that muscle-bound monster men would congregate from the outskirts of civilisation to compete in regimented sporting events.

It’s unlikely that any individual in the gaming world will ever have a song written about them, but Geoff Keighley is a good candidate for the first. That song is Linkin Park’s In the End since there’s no one that personifies this song better. For the second year in a row Keighley ran the Video Game Awards solo, having cut ties with Spike after 2013’s disaster.
To his credit, Keighley really does try with these shows. He and his team put in a lot of effort and it shows, since it went solo the VGAs have been much more game-focused than Spike ever made them, and it’s almost refreshing. The focus is the games, never mind the Pepsi product placement everywhere and, confusingly, this year’s constant mention of Go90, a product many were unfamiliar with prior to, and during the show.

Boardwalk Empire, Ep. 5.08: “Eldorado” leaves only the dust and ash of regret
That it seemed obvious for the series’ finale to send Nucky out was a bit of a given, considering the telegraphed nature of the flashback conceit which had been building for the entirety of this season. There were glimpses of hope, and chances for atonement but the clock had already run out by the time Nucky took his final stroll down the boardwalk…. click here to read the article.
‘Neverending Nightmares’ is truly neverending
Based on designer Matt Gilgenbach’s battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression, Neverending Nightmares is a psychological horror game that amplifies feelings of unease through repetition in a minimalist setting. Personally, this was the most difficult game for me to finish because of the content. There were several moments when I just had to stop and seriously question whether or not I could feasibly finish the game.

Every so often a movie comes along that’s unspeakably paralyzing and gutwrenching, causing post-credit asphyxiation after your heart jumps straight into your throat. The Treatment is exactly that kind of harrowing, haunting filmmaking that elevates typical crime-drama-storytelling into realms we’d probably be better off never exploring, yet filmmaker Hans Herbots ensures you’ll be glued to your seat whether you like it or not. Based on a novel written by Mo Hayder, U.S. audiences will quickly notice parallels between Herbots’ adaptation and Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, but The Treatment is a shocking mystery that deserves no comparison. Kudos to Herbots and company for echoing a bleak, relentless and viciously gritty drama that never shies away from making a film too emotionally jarring, plunging into darkness while never coming up for air – heroic foreign filmmaking in a time when most American movies won’t be greenlit without a fluffy,...

There were no new consoles at E3 this year, no expensive new peripherals. Nothing, at long last, to distract from the videogames. And what games! The 2014 videogame megaconvention found the three major companies adjusting to a new kind of normal: a kinder-gentler Microsoft, a swaggery Sony, a Nintendo that suddenly realized it was time to throw a Hail Mary on the Wii U. Across the board, there was a sense of experimentation. Major developers iterated old franchises in new directions. Smaller developers made bold splashes with highly independent visions.

A quarter-century ago, Kevin Costner hit a double-play, following up "Bull Durham" with "Field of Dreams" and becoming king of the sports movie. Twenty-five years later, as "Field of Dreams" marks its 25th anniversary (it was released on April 21, 1989), Costner is back with "Draft Day." The movie's about football, not baseball, and Costner's character plays in the executive suite, not on the field, but his mere presence still offers a reminder of great sports movies past.
And after all, isn't nostalgia a key element of sports movies? "Field of Dreams" makes this explicit -- we long for the sports heroes of our childhood, for a supposed long-gone golden age of our preferred sport, as a way of connecting with our past and bridging the generational divide that separates us as adults from our parents. Sports movies offer more than just the drama of winners and losers, or the journey from dream to achievement,...

TV news and notes:
- Two weeks into its midseason run and "The Walking Dead" continues to take ratings gold in the key 18-49 demo over the Winter Olympics. Though Sunday's (Feb. 16) episode was down slightly from the week prior's midseason premiere, the AMC hit pulled a 6.8 rating in the demo -- or 8.7 million viewers -- besting NBC's 4.9 rating for the Sochi Games. Of course, the Olympics earned more viewers overall, scoring 21.3 million viewers compared to AMC's 13.3 million.
- A new season of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting" premieres Tuesday, April 1. The eighth season of Duggar family adventures will follow sister Tessa as she "courts" Ben -- that's dates with the intention of marrying. It'll also follow the four eldest sisters as they write their book, and will catch up with Josh and Anna and their life in Washington, D.C.

Jon Kilik, who has been producing films big and small from New York for as long as I can remember, gave Sunday’s keynote address to open the Ifp Market. He makes some compelling points about the viability of film, countering warning cries from the likes of Steven Soderbergh, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. I’ve trimmed it a bit, but here’s the speech by Kilik, who produced the Bennett Miller-directed Foxcatcher which bows December 20, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which opens November 22, and the Spike Lee-directed Mike Tyson one-man show The Undisputed Truth, which airs on HBO next month. “I live near the Film Forum and last Saturday I went to see Jean Luc Godard’s “Contempt”, on it’s 50th anniversary. In the film, Fritz Lang plays the director of a commercial treatment of “The Odyssey”. His line near the end of the film sums...

Phew! What a ride! Two short hours later, the MTV Movie Awards are over, and it's safe to say that the 2013 version was as memorable as any. One thing's for sure: I definitely didn't write this vague, general introduction a full 45 minutes before the show even started.
It was a whirlwind 120 minutes, and even if you didn't miss a moment, you may have missed a few moments. So let's head to the replay booth and recap the best and worst of what we just saw.
Best: Snoop Lion Calling "Magic Mike" a "Beautiful Movie" on the Red Carpet
And it wasn't even awkward. America just nodded.
Somewhere Between Best And Worst: "The Only Thing I've Hosted is This Parasitic Worm."
Haha/ew.
Best: Rebel Wilson's Physical Comedy
She dominated the intro's "Pitch Perfect" reunion that was only sullied by the production staff inexplicably cutting to Kim Kardashian's botoxified...

Most Fitting Finale: Hats off to Tina Fey and Co. for wrapping up 30 Rock’s seven season run on an absurdly hilarious and surprising heartfelt note.
Most Manipulative: We all know The Bachelor’s bitchy Tierra doesn’t have a shot at walking away with Sean’s heart… and so does she. But that doesn’t mean she’s not willing to let herself be portrayed in the worst possible light in exchange for her 15 minutes of fame.
Most Shameless: In what some have called a desperate ratings stunt, this week’s episode of Glee saw the writer’s shamelessly take advantage of its most eye-pleasing collection of student bodies to date by forcing the cast to strip down to raise money so that New Directions could compete at Regionals. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Least Eloquent Response: Upon learning that folks were petitioning to have him...

I hate when movies make casting choices that are obvious attempts to court notice by the Academy Awards. Yes, Scary Movie 5, I’m looking at you.

They join other master thespians Ashley Tisdale, Erica Ash, Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, Simon Rex, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Marisa Saks, Heather Locklear, Jasmine Guy, Angie Stone, Kate Walsh, Angela “Big Ang” Raiola and Sherée Whitfield.
Tisdale also sent out the following Tweet the other day:
“Lots of cameos shooting today on #scarymovie5. Super excited!!!! #thisjobisawesome”
No shit there’s a lot of cameos. At this rate even the extras are being played by recognizable “actors”.

Chicago – To a lot of people out there, the very concept of James Toback’s “Tyson” might sound overwhelming. Spending ninety minutes with a man as intense, controversial, and even scary as Mike Tyson could have been a nightmare. But in the hands of the very talented Toback (“Bugsy,” “Fingers”), “Tyson” is a riveting portrait of a life lived in the public eye but barely understood by it.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 How does one even begin to understand someone who goes into a ring to get punched in the face? No one could possibly dissect Michael Tyson more accurately than Iron Mike himself and Toback made his most brilliant move before he even shot a frame of film, allowing the former champ to tell his own story. The summer movie season can occasionally manage to elevate a special performance in a quieter cinematic effort into the public consciousness, giving ticket-buyers something to get excited about besides giant robots, hormone-addled wizards, or hot-shot starship captains. Whether or not The Ugly Truth delivers big numbers in its debut this weekend, it will invariably launch one of its cast from obscurity into superstardom, in a performance that will be discussed for years: We speak, of course, of the mechanically enhanced underthings that deliver Katherine Heigl -- and with her, millions of delighted moviegoers -- into big-screen ecstasy. (Indeed, virtually everyone already knows the film as "The One With the Vibrating Panties.")
Movieline recently sat down for a heart-to-heart with the summer's most buzzed-about (pun most definitely intended) star. Sorry, Mike Tyson's tiger!

Given the messy spectacle that was Michael Jackson's life, one could easily imagine his memorial service, held yesterday at La's Staples Center, would be a three ring circus. What was surprising was how very subdued and touching it was at times. Some highlights included brother Jermaine's performance of his brother's favorite song, "Smile," Usher's performance of "Gone Too Soon" (the song Mj wrote in tribute to Ryan White), Brooke Shield's tearful eulogy, and perhaps most touching of all: When Jackson's daughter Paris-Michael took the microphone....

Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, the only daughter of Michael Jackson, paid her last tribute to late father, delivering a tearful goodbye speech on-stage during the public memorial service for the singer held at L.A.'s Staples Center on Tuesday, July 7. Keeping her tribute short, the little girl tried to fight back tears and said, "Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. I just want to say I love him so much."
Unable to avoid crying on stage, 11-year-old Paris turned to Janet Jackson, who was quick to embrace her. A moment later, Janet and some other family members led Paris off the stage. Paris' touching tribute was the first public statement made by any of Michael's children since the King of Pop passed away on June 25.

After winning one reality show you lost the other, how are you feeling?
Winning and losing is part of the game. One should bear defeat without losing heart like a true sportsman. Mike Tyson not necessarily will win all the boxing matches but he is the champ. Same goes for Nauman Sait! I’m an optimist and I will be back in wild card in wilder way.
