Stars: Shannon Dalonzo, Justin Gordon, Simon Phillips, Eileen Dietz, James Politano, Briahn Auguillard | Written by Noah Bessey | Directed by Robert Gajic
Opening his directorial debut in an intriguing manner, Robert Gajic has a woman’s voiceover share the character’s biggest fear at losing someone she cannot imagine life without. Quick cuts on-screen show a frightened woman chased by an unseen figure as credits roll, with the juxtaposition of audible love and visual fear crafting an intrigue for what circumstances will occur. Sadly, what unfolds cannot match this initial intrigue.
Fiancées Sarah (Shannon Dalonzo) and Michael (Justin Gordon) are driving across a desert setting, passing the time with hypothetical situations. They’re journeying to visit Sarah’s ill father, as she hopes he’ll be able to attend their wedding. Their ham-fisted dialogue is interrupted by the car hitting something, despite there being no sign of whatever they hit.

A young couple drive around in circles in the desert while being pursued by a demonic driver in this tedious wannabe shocker
This lumpy, tedious horror thriller teases a big mystery as to what’s really going on for a couple who keep finding themselves back on the same stretch of highway no matter which direction they drive off in. Unfortunately, the reveal at the end is the second most hackneyed plot twist in film history. (Hint: it’s the one that isn’t “it was all a dream”.) The best way not to break your brain trying to guess is just not watch this nonsense at all.
Those who persist in ignoring this warning will be subjected to an attenuated campfire-style spooky story that starts with young lovers Sarah and Michael (Justin Gordon) driving along the stretch of Route 66 that, judging by the cactus-like vegetation, is just near Joshua Tree national park.

Has any showdown on the highway film ever come close to Steven Spielberg’s Duel? Certainly not many, and there’s a reason for that. What Spielberg understood was that to be effective a film like this has to be minimal, every shot focused on managing the tension, never distracting from the central threat. The Fearway does the opposite, claiming to be scary but suffocated by additional plotting as unnecessary as it is obvious, and with terrible acting to boot.
On their way to visit her father, who is in poor health following a series of heart attacks, Sarah (Shannon DaLonzo) and Michael (Justin Gordon) have a bizarre accident, skidding on what appears to be a patch of ice on a long desert road in the daytime. There’s a mystery here, so one starts out hoping that the film will go somewhere interesting, but instead most of the running time is spent literally.

Thorns: "Something terribly wrong is happening inside NASA’s Iron Mountain observatory. It received an image from a deep space probe from what appears to be the edge of the solar system. On screen an eclipsed planet of unknown origin. Could this be the fabled 9th planet mankind has been searching for? An eerie signal transmits over the speakers, a rhythmic drone possibly a signal from the planet? But wait, something more. Deep within the signal, a faint sinister chatter. It sounds demonic. Have we discovered life across the galaxy? Down the hall, a distraught scientist, Dr. Malik. sits on the cold restroom floor looking unkept and unshaven. He hasn’t slept in days and appears deeply unnerved. Voices in his head motivate him to the mirror where he looks deep into his eyes. Wait, what is that? Something crawling in his eye? A black shape slithers across his sclera.

Escape Through Africa, that’s a title that conjures up visions of films from a bygone era – where soldiers took on the rough terrain and vicious locals of the vast continent, usually with stiff upper lips and a bravado that time and time again was the downfall of many a character. As a dictionary-style onscreen definition explains at the start of “Gehanna: Where Death Lives,” that G-word is a long-standing term for a “most accursed place [or] destination of the wicked,” although not necessarily to be confused with Hell. An opening sequence of an old man having his face ripped off by muttering ritual practitioners in loincloths certainly doesn’t make it seem an ideal getaway spot.
Nonetheless, this English-language directorial debut for makeup FX specialist Hiroshi Katagiri sets its protagonists on a sacred burial spot they hope to turn into a commercial resort — something to which the resident spirits take great exception, natch. Trapped in an underground labyrinth, their predicament becomes all too relatable, since the movie itself strands viewers in a dimly lit purgatory that grows interminable, with little in the way of scares or excitement as relief. It’s not a total wash, but the eventually dreary mix of...

I have to admit that what drew me most to Gehenna: Where Death Lives was the appearance of Doug Jones (most recently seen in the Oscar winner The Shape Of Water) in the movie. I suspected it might be just a cameo but it was enough to at least get me interested.
We start with a group of investors head up by Lance Henriksen, in a short cameo via phone call, who are looking for the perfect spot for a new resort. When they seemingly find this, they also find a hidden Japanese bunker from World War 2, which they decide to explore. This is a horror movie, so obviously exploring an abandoned war...

"How far does this go?" Uncork'd Entertainment has released the first official trailer for a super creepy horror thriller titled Gehenna, or Gehenna: Where Death Lives in full, from Japanese director and SFX veteran Hiroshi Katagiri. This film is about a group of white tourists who travel to Saipan in the Mariana Islands, and go into a WWII bunker they think is the perfect place for a resort. Once inside, they discover there's much more to the bunker - including a very pasty old slender man, as well as the horror trope of "they must face their most private secrets." Gehenna stars Lance Henriksen, Patrick Gorman, Simon Phillips, Sean Sprawling, Eva Swan, Justin Gordon, and Katherine Wallace. Plus Doug Jones as the "Creepy Old Man" (literally what his character is listed as). I wish this looked better, but it looks so bad. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster art) for Hiroshi Katagiri's Gehenna,...

As Tricia tries to move on with her life she is haunted by terrifying visions while her sister finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house which is linked to other unexplained disappearances. It becomes clear the tunnel holds a dark secret, something lies in the shadows and Daniel may be suffering a fate far worse than death.

Back in 2011 my best of the year list was topped by Mike Flanagan's Absentia, and with his follow-up, Oculus, in theatres now, it's good to see a little love being shown to his award-winning breakthrough film as it hits UK Blu-ray for the first time.
From the Press Release:
One of the most frightening films of recent years, Mike Flanagan's critically acclaimed Absentia makes its UK Blu-ray debut courtesy of Second Sight Films. A new DVD release is on its way as well, with both hitting stores on 7 July.
Synopsis:
Tricia’s (Courtney Bell) husband, Daniel, has been missing for seven years, and with the help of her sister, Callie (Katie Parker), she finally declares him legally dead ‘in absentia.’ As Tricia tries to move on with her life, she becomes haunted by terrifying visions, while Callie is strangely drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house with links to other unexplained disappearances.

Words alone cannot begin to describe how happy we are about the following bit of news. Around here we've been raving about a little indie movie called Absentia, which is pretty damned spooky. Now, once again... the little guy makes good!
According to Variety, Fallback Plan Productions is ramping up Scare Dares, a sub-$1 million indie chiller with an inventive mobile app tie-in that aims to start shooting later this year.
Scare Dares reteams Mike Flanagan, writer/director of micro-budget horror pic Absentia, with the same producers and much of the same cast, including Courtney Bell, Katie Parker, Justin Gordon and Morgan Peter Brown.
Scare Dares, described as an "adrenalized homage to classic horror films," centers on a smartphone app that leads users to known areas of paranormal phenomena in central California. Things go wrong when a group of estranged friends kick off a reunion weekend by visiting ghostly hotspots and engaging in occult dares.

Absentia is a ghost story from director Mike Flanagan, which has received praise from many film critics. Toby McCasker at Fangoria has called the film disturbing and terrifying and now, Phase 4 Films will be making this title available through a video-on-demand feature July 1st, 2011. As a sidebar, why is this format called video-on-demand, when the delivery comes via digital? The film industry continues to mystify this reviewer. Meanwhile, a wife tries to move on from her unhappy marriage, as her husband has been missing for seven years. Are those strange sounds coming from a recess in Tricia's backyard her husband saying goodbye, or something much more sinister? Fans will have to watch this film July 1st to find out, when Absentia becomes available through various cable providers.

Mike Flanagan’s indie horror film Absentia is really quite the buzz right now and is only building momentum. Mike was cool enough to take some time and let me into his little horror world. Covering from how he got into filmmaking, to the plans for this very dark, very cool film of his. Be on the lookout for this film at cons and festivals near you, don't miss it and look for my review of Absentia coming soon! As he says, “Absentia is made for horror fans, by horror fans.” Check out my latest “Versus” with director Mike Flanagan.
Brian S- Hey Mike, first off how'd you get into filmmaking?
Mike Flanagan- My answer to that question is pretty cliched. Always loved movies, watched "Jaws" a thousand times, made my own backyard projects in 5th grade, blah blah blah. I majored in Electronic Media & Film at Towson University in Maryland,...

I ran across Mike Flanagan's Absentia on Facebook a while back and we've been following it ever since. This is what we call "the little film that could". It's a Kick Starter funded project that has actually made it to the finish line and it looks like it's going to be a killer movie, judging by the poster, images below and trailer . The film stars Katie Parker, Courtney Bell, David Levine, Morgan Brown, Justin Gordon, James Flanagan, and everybody's favorite Abe Sapien and friend of GeekTyrant, Doug Jones. Since the art of filmmaking has become accessible to the point of being able to make a movie in your own home on your PC or Mac, there has been a deluge of indie flicks hitting the market in various forms. Unfortunately, most miss a lot more than they hit, but every once in a while an indie movie will come along with just the right amount of everything and it makes the search for these gems all the more worth it. Case in point ...
We had the opportunity to screen Absentia (review here) recently, and believe us when we tell you it's like a breath of fresh air. Proof positive that with a good director and cast and a smart script, you do not need a massive budget to make a good movie. In fact, Absentia is one of the few fan-funded via Kickstarter flicks that we've come across to actually get made.

This month has been one of the best that I can remember for trailers. All the studios were desperate for their trailer to get released before the Christmas holidays and we were inundated with posts. I’ve embedded them in the order in which they were released start December 1st to 31st and if I miss any, please let me know and I’ll update the post.

I first saw, and subsequently posted, the sizzle reel for Absentia back in July and now I’ve seen the trailer I’m really looking forward to checking this great looking horror film as soon as possible.
Fallback Plan Productions is headed by the team of Morgan Peter Brown and Justin Gordon, and Absentia is their first project. Written and directed by Mike Flanagan this film is due out in next year, here’s the synopsis,
Absentia tells the story of a woman whose husband has been missing for seven years, and she must now face the grim realities of declaring him “dead in absentia.” With the help of her sister and a sympathetic detective she tries to move on with her life. But all is not what it seems to be, and disappearance does not equal death.
When I saw the sizzle reel what really jumped out at me...
