Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F unsurprisingly reunited Eddie Murphy’s Detective Axel Foley with several of his old buddies from the first three movies. But he also briefly bumped into… the villain from a completely unrelated Adam Sandler movie?
One of the oddest moments in Axel F (which was actually a lot of fun) comes when Foley and his daughter’s ex Bobby crash a helicopter onto a golf course. The conclusion of the movie’s biggest action sequence finds the two cops being confronted by an angry golfer played by none other than Christopher McDonald. While McDonald is credited simply as “Golfer,” some fans naturally assumed that he was supposed to be Happy Gilmore’s nemesis Shooter McGavin.
Sure, he could have just been playing a brand new character. Or, for that matter, Marty from Hacks, who has been known to play golf occasionally. But it seems pretty...

Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is doing the Neutron Dance atop other films in Netflix‘s library for the second consecutive week! According to Netflix, the sequel starring Eddie Murphy in one of his most iconic roles held the top spot on the English Films List with 22.2M views. Nostalgia is mighty when it comes to racking up numbers on Netflix. It helps that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is fun and features a cast of veteran actors reliving the glory days that helped make them household names. Regardless of the reason, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a hit, and Murphy deserves kudos for his efforts to make Axel’s latest case a thrilling revival.

Spoiler Warning: This story mentions major spoilers for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” now streaming on Netflix.
Axel Foley is back in Beverly Hills, and so is Eddie Murphy.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” director Mark Molloy set out to make a film with the same feeling and tone as the 1984 classic “Beverly Hills Cop” and its 1987 sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop 2.” He calls the latest film in the franchise “my love letter to the first two films.”
Molloy recruited Jahmin Assa, the film’s production designer, to pay tribute to those earlier chapters in numerous ways. Assa’s goal was to create something that made “Los Angeles feel timeless and as fresh as it did in the 1980s,” and that included shutting down city streets in Detroit and Los Angeles to finding the perfect location to execute a 1980s-style mansion shootout for the film’s third act, and crash...

Reprising his role as lovable undercover cop Axel Foley, the actor – and some full-on car-chase carnage – can’t disguise a plot several decades past its sell-by date in debut director Mark Molloy’s slickly packaged action comedy
It’s a full 40 years since maverick Detroit police detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) first found himself a fish out of water in the alien world of Beverly Hills, and 30 years since the franchise’s most recent instalment. As Foley revisits the west coast yet again for the fourth film, what’s remarkable is how little has changed. Sure, there are a few more wrinkles on the returning cast members, but the plot could have been cut and pasted from parts of any one of the previous outings.
Foley creates havoc in a Detroit-based opening action sequence, decamps to the fanciest upmarket neighbourhood in Los Angeles, causes more havoc, falls foul of his...

Eddie Murphy’s title character in the Netflix film Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has an unexpected partner for fighting crime.
The streaming service shared a new promo for the action-comedy movie on Friday that features Crazy Frog, the animated character that rose to pop culture prominence with a dance-focused rendition of the franchise’s theme music nearly two decades ago. The new promo features key scenes from the film that show Crazy Frog inserted into the action to cause extra chaos for Murphy’s character.
Netflix’s official X (formerly Twitter) account posted the video Friday with the message, “Crazy Frog And Axel Foley???” Among the accounts responding to the post was that of T-Mobile, which commented, “The Goat of ringtones.” Netflix replied, “Invented ringtones.”

It's been nearly 30 years since we last saw Axel Foley, the wisecracking Detroit cop played by Eddie Murphy, bring his street smarts to the posh streets of Beverly Hills. Now Netflix has revived the beloved franchise with the new film 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,' reuniting Murphy with original cast members Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser.
This time around, Detective Foley heads back to Beverly Hills to save his estranged daughter and district attorney (played by Taylour Paige) from potential danger while investigating a murder. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Paige’s cop ex-boyfriend, who joins in the mayhem as Foley and his pals uncover a conspiracy involving drug cartels.
How does the film stack up against the other movies in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise? Not bad, according to early IMDb user voting. Two days after premiering on Netflix, the fourth film has 15K votes with a respectable 6.7 average IMDb rating. That rating puts it above previous sequels ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ (1987) at 6.5/10 stars and 134K votes, and 1994’s maligned ‘Beverly Hills Cop III,’ which sits at 5.5 with 90K votes. Unsurprisingly, the iconic original ‘Beverly Hills Cop’—directed by Martin Brest in 1984—has the highest score, with an impressive 7.4 rating with 209K votes.
If all this talk of Eddie Murphy and ‘80s buddy cop movies has you feeling nostalgic, IMDb spoke with the cast and crew of ’Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ to get their favorite films from the ‘80s and their must-see Murphy flicks. See what director Mark Molloy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and stars Kevin Bacon, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold shared with us in the 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' Cast and Creators Watchlist....

The nostalgia for the Eddie Murphy-led beloved action-comedy franchise Beverly Hills Cop is at an all-time high, now that the actor once again returned to the silver screen as the iconic Axel Foley in Mark Molloy helmed Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. However, following the release of Murphy’s fourth installment in the franchise, Molloy dropped shocking revelations that are sure to spark controversies among the fandom.

By now, many of you have undoubtedly watched Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix. While jam-packed with easter eggs that will please fans of the series, the movie also contains an unusual cameo that left a lot of fans scratching their heads, as it seems to suggest that another highly anticipated Netflix sequel takes place in the same universe as Axel F.
That movie, of course, is Happy Gilmore 2. In Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Christopher McDonald shows up as an irate Beverly Hills golfer, with many assuming he’s, in fact, playing the famous Happy Gilmore antagonist Shooter McGavin. Indeed, he certainly looks like Shooter and acts like Shooter, so could he be playing the same guy?
Given that Netflix is behind Happy Gilmore 2 and Axel F, it seems reasonable to assume that this cameo is more than just a coincidence. Murphy and Adam Sandler both...

Mark Molloy's "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" succeeds in large part because it is unabashedly formulaic in a way many mainstream programmers are afraid to be nowadays (though we're not all fans here at /Film). Yes, superhero movies and four-quadrant family entertainments contain obligatory elements like Easter eggs for the properties' hardcore fan base and mid- or post-credit scenes to juice excitement for the next installment, but, narratively, the brand managers (i.e. filmmakers) feel a need to overdeliver. It's no longer enough to deliver a simple, well-told story. This is how ephemeral studio/streaming tentpoles wind up with bloated runtimes and obscenely inflated budgets. When viewers look up from their phones to check in on "Red Notice," they expect to see something of significance happening.

Axel F director Mark Molloy reveals that producer Jerry Bruckheimer has never seen Beverly Hills Cop III: “I didn’t do it, so you don’t need to see it.”
Barely doubling its sizeable $70m budget, Beverly Hills Cop III's box office takings suggested that audiences had thoroughly checked out of the franchise by 1994. And among the people who didn’t show up to watch the cop comedy thriller we can count Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first two films in the series.
Word of this comes from Mark Molloy, the commercials director who made his feature debut with belated sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, streaming now on Netflix. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Molloy revealed that he’s never seen the third film in the series, and had been advised not to bother watching it by producer Jerry Bruckheimer – who hasn’t seen it either.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’s Mark Molloy is now the latest in a long line of filmmakers who Jerry Bruckheimer has recruited from the world of advertising.
Having written or directed at least four commercials for Apple, the humble Australian filmmaker won’t allow himself to say that he followed in the same footsteps as fellow Bruckheimer discoveries Tony Scott and Michael Bay, but in his ongoing effort to change up the status quo, the celebrated producer has frequently found new talent through commercials and music videos. In the ‘80s, Scott was one of a handful of British commercial directors who took their unconventional styles to the States, and Bruckheimer and Don Simpson’s Top Gun (1986) served as his American debut. The massive success of that film prompted the two producing partners to quickly rehire Scott for Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), a film that Molloy channeled in Netflix’s...

First released in 1984, Martin Brest’s “Beverly Hills Cop” was one of the defining movies of its decade, and a huge stepping stone (along with “48 Hrs.” and “Trading Places”) toward stardom for Eddie Murphy. It not only spawned two sequels over the next decade, but set a template for action comedies that persists today. “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” marks the overdue fourth installment in the franchise and introduces with it a director to watch: Mark Molloy.
After beginning his career as a director of commercials for brands like Nike, Google and Apple, Molloy makes his feature debut with “Axel F,” which drew heavily from the first two “Beverly Hills Cop” films while pushing forward the story of its eponymous detective, now father to an equally-driven but estranged daughter (played by “Zola” breakout Taylour Paige).

It's been thirty years since the atrocious "Beverly Hills Cop III" seemingly killed the franchise for good, and longtime fans of the franchise can breathe a sigh of relief: The bad taste left in our mouths from that movie has finally been washed away. The brand new and long-gestating "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" may not be able to live up to the towering classic status of the first two films, but it's lightyears ahead of the third movie. Murphy feels like he still has a handle on this character and brings him into the modern world while still retaining some of what we love about him. That's a tricky balance to pull off without falling back too many times on the same exact lines we've seen before, and director Mark Molloy was instrumental in helping Murphy strike that balance.

Cue the synthesizers — Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley. It’s been nearly 30 years since we last saw the fast-talking Detroit cop, but he’s finally heading out on a new case. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Axel on patrol back in Beverly Hills, with friends both old and new — and maybe even a family member. As producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells Tudum, “Eddie’s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy –– he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously with age you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye.”
In other words: Axel’s only grown more potent in the last few decades. And so has Murphy. Director Mark Molloy tells Tudum: “Some of the funniest moments in Axel F...

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the long-awaited fourth film in Eddie Murphy’s action comedy franchise, is now streaming on Netflix. It’s a 1980s throwback that features the return of old cast members like Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Bronson Pinchot.
To help communicate the film’s nostalgic vibe, Netflix hired Benedict Coulter, the editor who made the original “Beverly Hills Cop” trailer, to cut a new trailer in the style of his ‘80s work.
The result is a fun, high-energy trailer with a remarkably different feeling than modern trailers. This one skips the “trailer starts now” teaser before the actual teaser and that ubiquitous bass drop sound effect in favor of narration (lifted from the late trailer narrator Don Lafontaine’s voiceover for “Beverly Hills Cop II”) and a familiar song playing just beneath the dialogue for the whole thing: the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” which also soundtracked the original trailer.

Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley to help celebrate the 4th of July holiday. He is returning to one of his most legendary roles in Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which is playing exclusively on Netflix. The previous entry in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop III, was released in 1994 and received mixed reviews. In the latest chapter of the Axel Foley saga, Detroit’s finest ditches the rickety rides of Wonder World to return to the streets of Beverly Hills after his daughter, Jane Saunders, is threatened.

Actors almost never become movie stars overnight. Even the born-to-dazzle likes of Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and Paul Newman needed a bit of runway to soar to that rarified Hollywood air. Eddie Murphy, however, needed just one moment in his first movie to become a generational showbiz phenomenon.
That moment arrived 38 minutes into Walter Hill's 1982 action-comedy hit "48 Hrs.," when Murphy's furloughed criminal Reggie Hammond convinces Nick Nolte's Detective Jack Cates to let him shakedown a redneck bar's racist patrons for information on the whereabouts of a cop killer. Reggie, tired of Cates insistence that it takes "bullls*** and experience" to successfully interrogate suspects, invites the officer to "Come on in and experience some of my bulls***." Armed with nothing but Cates' shield and his mouth, Reggie bullies cows a saloon full of hostile white folks into terrified silence.

Exclusive: It’s no accident that a new trailer for Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F looks and sounds a heckuva lot like the trailer for the original 1984 movie starring Eddie Murphy.
That’s because it was made by Benedict Coulter, the veteran editor who cut the first trailer for Beverly Hills Cop 40 years ago while working for Kaleidoscope Films. At the time a frustrated musician who ended up at one of those Hollywood trailer companies, Coulter was one of only a handful of artists who cut trailers for motion pictures back in the days of leg warmers, Michael Jackson wannabes and the Pointer Sisters.
Coulter’s unique style was to make kick-ass teasers with unforgettable songs (he would go on to cut the trailer for Top Gun). Netflix was so enamored with the way Coulter promoted Murphy’s breakout performance that it asked Coulter to cut a special...

The trend of "legacy sequel" films are called that for a reason. For one thing, they cannot be labeled as such if a franchise has been mostly active ever since its inception (thus most horror franchises need not apply). For another, they all tend to deal with a literal question of legacy in some fashion. Some of these films approach that question from a "What influence does someone leave on the world" perspective, but many look at it from the most relatable angle: family.
Even though, technically, "Beverly Hills Cop" isn't wholly a 1980s franchise, it effectively is. The original 1984 film, directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify Eddie Murphy as a bonafide movie star, kicked the careers of producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson into a higher gear, and showcased a score by composer Harold Faltermeyer that arguably best encapsulates the sound of the decade. The sequel, made in 1987 by Tony Scott,...

It’s been over 30 years since Eddie Murphy’s intrepid Detroit detective, Axel Foley, last graced movie screens in Beverly Hills Cop III. A much-loved franchise from the 1980s, the films followed the fish-out-of-water Axel as he traded the gritty streets of Detroit for sun-drenched Southern California, blazing his own trail to solve crimes and throwing more than a few spanners in the works of the fancy Beverly Hills Police Department along the way.
Now in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy returns once again as the wisecracking yet dedicated cop, this time bringing his rebellious energy to help his estranged lawyer daughter Jane. When masked intruders dangle her from a parking structure, Axel jumps on a plane and dusts off the signature Lions windbreaker that made him an icon to find out who’s behind the threats. Back in the golden fold are some familiar franchise faces like...

Kevin Bacon won’t forget getting the opportunity to work with Eddie Murphy on Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
While recently speaking with People magazine, the actor had nothing but praise for his co-star, saying it was a “bucket list thing to work with him. He is one of our greatest movie stars ever.”
In the Mark Molloy-directed movie, Murphy reprises his character, Detroit detective Axel Foley, four decades after the original 1984 movie, while Bacon plays Captain Grant.
Though the two legendary actors rose to fame around the same time in the 80s, with the original Beverly Hills Cop and Bacon’s Footloose coming out in the same year, they didn’t have many interactions at the time.
“Our paths never crossed in the ’80s. We never worked together. I don’t remember even having met him — I’m sure we probably did, but I don’t remember,” Bacon recalled.

Coming almost thirty years after the last installment in the franchise was released – and nearly forty years after the series debuted – Eddie Murphy returns as Detroit Detective Axel Foley in the latest release from Netflix Films – Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. What is remarkably refreshing about the not-so-young cop’s new adventure is that it may be the best of the series since it started back in 1984.
Foley’s latest case has him returning to Beverly Hills after his longtime friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) is reported missing by Foley’s estranged daughter (Taylour Paige) and Axel heads to California to find out what happened to his old friend. Once in Beverly Hills, the case of Billy’s disappearance quickly becomes the tip of an iceberg leading Axel to uncover a conspiracy that may threaten the entire Beverly Hills police force.

Eddie Murphy was a household name in the United States of America way before he forayed into films due to his standup comedy. But, if my memory isn’t failing me, he garnered international fame after his work in The Nutty Professor, Mulan, and Dr. Dolittle. And after he became the voice of Donkey in Shrek, every kid in the whole wide world became familiar with Murphy’s body of work. However, as the cinematic landscape, especially the comedy genre, started to change, and the pile of bad reviews turned into a mountain, Murphy decided to take a break. His return to the big screen wasn’t all that good. So, he took yet another break and returned with one of the best movies of all time, Dolemite Is My Name. Now, he seems to be in the mood to reprise some of his older roles. Comedy 2 America wasn’t good.

Plot: After an attempt on his daughter’s life and the disappearance of his friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) returns to Beverly Hills to do battle with a group of corrupt cops.
Review: Right off the bat, it’s clear that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F director Mark Molloy nailed the assignment. In the movie’s first scene, we see Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley driving around his beloved Detroit, cracking a smile as Glenn Frey’s “The Heat is On” fills the soundtrack. It’s not subtle, but it delivers the message loud and clear that for the first time since the second film in 1987, we can legitimately say there’s a new Beverly Hills Cop movie out, and it kicks butt. Wholeheartedly embracing an R-rating, with frequent F-bombs and surprisingly hardcore action beats, Molloy’s made a movie that will likely prove to...

Eddie Murphy cheerfully shoots his way through California’s wrong ‘uns in a charming revival of a 40-year-old franchise. Here’s our Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review.
As the first Beverly Hills Cop movie to be released after its iconic theme was covered by Crazy Frog, Axel F perhaps lands on Netflix with more baggage than most.
It’s landing straight on Netflix, for a start, in a period where the streamer’s original output hasn’t been exactly glowing (Richard Linklater’s Hit Man being a notable exception). Action-comedy The Fall Guy just failed to set the box office alight, and after years of sequels, reboots, and sequel-reboots, it’s easy to imagine that we’re approaching peak franchise-fatigue. Was anyone really asking for a Beverly Hills Cop 4?
The answer might well be no, but, now that it’s here, I’m happy to report that Beverly Hills Cop...

After the 1994 Beverly Hills Cop III, it seemed as if Eddie Murphy was done with the franchise. Within years, he trash-talked the ending. The franchise and character that helped make him a superstar needed him. Yet, with box office sensations and Oscar nominations on the horizon, Murphy entered a new era. Now, forty years after his first leading role, Murphy returns in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. However, could the comedy actor ever really come home again?

However, Billy (Judge Reinhold) calls Axel about a case involving Jane (Taylour Paige)- Axel’s daughter. By the time Axel gets to Beverly Hills, Billy has gone missing. Nostalgia, when it comes to reviving an old movie series, can be axiomatic. Every so often you see a genuine great piece of nostalgia — like “Creed” or the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot or the 2014 “Godzilla.” But then there’s the kind of nostalgia represented by “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” Plotted like a generic police-corruption thriller, lit with cruddy efficiency, pausing every 10 minutes or so for a “light” moment, the movie is no “Beverly Hills Cop.” But it’s better than the ballistic noise orgy that was “Beverly Hills Cop II” (1986) or the clunky retro mess of “Beverly Hills Cop III” (1994), so I guess we should be grateful. And I suspect that a lot of viewers who grew up in the ’80s will be.
Let’s be clear, though, about the level of nostalgia this movie is aiming for. “Axel F.” is studded with moments that are designed to be time-machine triggers,...

Eddie Murphy was only 23 when "Beverly Hills Cop" arrived in theaters in 1984, and the action comedy helped make him a superstar. Murphy's raw talent was already apparent thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live," a show he joined when he as 19. His feature debut in Walter Hill's 1982 flick "48 Hrs." took him even further, as did his follow-up movie, 1983's "Trading Places". But "Beverly Hills Cop," directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify that Murphy was the real deal; a bonafide movie star. It was a mega-hit, and almost immediately made trash-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley an iconic character. Murphy was so cool, so confident, so suave that he took the character to extreme heights, taking a high concept pitch — what if a tough city cop ended up in posh Beverly Hills? — and creating movie magic in the process. Like Eddie Murphy, Axel Foley was young, hip, and in-demand.

Driving into town in his beat-up Chevy Nova, Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) still cannot believe the sights of Beverly Hills. He looks with bewilderment at high-fashion stores, a man dressed like a rockstar, and a blonde in a Corvette who offers a playful wink despite her boyfriend in the adjoining seat. Foley ends the sequence with his infectious chuckle, out of place in Beverly Hills but not out of ideas.
When Foley returns 40 years later for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, he repeats the drive in yet another beat-up vehicle. He notices a new set of California absurdities, including a child shooting video for his Instagram modeling mother and a woman in full burka passing Tom Ford’s store. But nothing here shocks Foley these days. Nothing drives him to his classic chuckle. Instead he gives it all a knowing smile and drives on.

It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since Eddie Murphy first exploded onto the screen as one of his signature characters, Axel Foley, in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop. But even if that 22 year old is now 63, he is still on the beat and doesn’t miss a beat all these years later in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, almost seeming to have stopped time with this character who is just as funny, sharp and entertaining as ever.
The original was the top-grossing movie of its year and led to two sequels, one in 1987 and another in 1994. That’s right, we haven’t had an Axel fix for 30 years, though not for lack of trying; there were several scripts along the way, but none felt right to its star until finally bringing in producer Jerry Bruckheimer who (with late partner Don Simpson) made the first couple of films.

There are a few valid reasons to make a sequel four decades down the track from an action-comedy blockbuster that left an indelible pop-cultural imprint: 1. A smart script with a completely fresh take on a formulaic genre. 2. Writing that digs into the ways an iconic character known for his rule-breaking irreverence adjusts to the social shifts of a different century. 3. New technology that allows for more explosive thrills. 4. The nostalgia of audiences for whom the original holds enduringly fond memories. 5. Lil Nas X agrees to write and perform a song, spinning rap verses around synthmeister Harold Faltermeyer’s catchy theme tune.
Sauntering along 30 years after the third installment opened to scalding reviews and underwhelming grosses, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F justifies its existence only with points 4 and 5. Which will likely be enough to satisfy diehard fans. Directed with journeyman efficiency by first-timer Mark Molloy and written by a committee that...

A renegade cop who refuses to play by the rules or pay any mind to the ungodly amount of collateral damage he causes in the name of saving Los Angeles from its own systemic rot, Axel Foley makes so much sense as the hero of a Netflix movie that it’s hard to believe the company didn’t invent him itself. Maybe that helps to explain why “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” feels sturdier and more self-possessed than your average straight-to-streaming legacy sequel, including Eddie Murphy’s own “Coming 2 America.” Here is a story of — and about — the diminished but enduring power of a classic brand in modern Hollywood (or at least the greater Hollywood area), and the moral of that story boils down to a simple idea: Familiarity is such a powerful force that it can inspire people to forgive pretty much anything.

It’s incredibly easy to be cynical about legacy sequels after years of watching studios and streamers desperately try to squeeze every last drop of content from whatever IP they could lay their hands on, regardless of whether there’s any more story to be told or anyone interested in it being told. But watching Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, it’s incredibly hard to maintain that cynicism when Harold Faltermeyer’s iconic “Axel F” theme kicks into gear and the man it’s named for, Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), breaks out his megawatt grin.

Given the series’ hit rate so far, the prospect of a new Beverly Hills Cop sequel may not inspire much enthusiasm. It may even bring on a vague dread. Somehow, happily, the fourth film in the series is the most enjoyable since the 1984 original. Which is not to say it’s anywhere close to the quality of that film, but in keeping its ambitions simple it pulls off an entertaining couple of hours that are light, funny, and nostalgic without being overly self-conscious.
It begins, as is tradition, in Detroit, where Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is still causing trouble, managing to smash up the city in pursuit of fairly minor criminals. A drug case then takes him once more to Beverly Hills, where he crosses paths with his old colleagues Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton), as well as his estranged daughter, Jane (Taylour Paige), an attorney defending...

A few weeks ago, something absolutely incredible happened. On behalf of JoBlo.com, I was invited to attend the world premiere of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F in Beverly Hills! While there, I got to interview the entire cast, including Eddie Murphy. To give this a little context, I was born in ’81, and I grew up idolizing Murphy and watching all of the Beverly Hills Cop movies over and over. And yes, I said All – even 3. So, being invited to the glamourous premiere was pretty heady stuff. Heck, when I was there, I even got to meet another childhood hero of mine, Bronson Pinchot, from Perfect Strangers.
I’ve already posted my Eddie Murphy interview (check it out here), but today, I’m getting to post a lot more. In the video above, you can see me interviewing the whole cast, but here are my thoughts on each of them.

Mark Molloy, the director of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, stillremembers the first time he encountered Axel Foley.
“My uncle had a VHS player, which was rare where I grew up in rural Australia,” Molloy told Netflix. “He put [Beverly Hills Cop] on, and I remember lying on the carpet watching it. I was just in awe. I’d never seen a movie like it, for one. But Eddie [Murphy], Axel Foley, the jacket, LA, Beverly Hills — everything just felt so exotic to me.”
Nearly every member of the Axel F team remembers loving Beverly Hills Cop from afar. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s brother taught him how to play “Axel F,” the film’s earworm theme song, on the piano; Taylour Paige marveled at early streetwear icon Axel’s casual sense of style; Kevin Bacon watched Murphy’s star rise as Bacon caught fire in Footloose the same year. When first-time feature filmmaker Mark Molloy got the — admittedly, quite wild — phone call from super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer about the possibility of directing the long-gestating fourth film in the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, he didn’t have to do much research. After all, the long-time commercial director was a fan of the Eddie Murphy comedy franchise from way back. Like, watching the original films on VHS on the family farm kinda way back.
There was, however, one piece of legwork he opted not to undertake: Watching the third, much-maligned film in the franchise. Based on how poorly “Beverly Hills Cop III” did when it was released in 1994 (including a franchise-worst box office take of $119 million and roundly negative reviews from critics and Murphy himself), Molloy was hardly the only hardcore Axel Foley fan who skipped the whole thing.
