Emerald Fennell has cast her first film since Saltburn, as she takes on adaptation of Wuthering Heights. More here.
Despite being one of the greatest novels written in the English language (apart from The Da Vinci Code), it’s probably fair to say that we’ve never had a definitive screen version of Wuthering Heights. Sure, you might well have a favourite Heathcliff, whether that’s Timothy Dalton, Tom Hardy or otherwise, but given just how iconic the novel is, we’ve yet to see a version that fully does it justice.
Enter Emerald Fennell then. The director behind Promising Young Woman and Saltburn is tackling Emily Brontë’s seminal gothic romance, or as the immortal British sitcom, Peep Show once called it, ‘not a love story but a clucking cluck story’.
Or words similar to that effect, anyway.

Renowned filmmaker Emerald Fennell will direct a new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s famous 1847 novel “Wuthering Heights.” Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to star as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, the passionate yet destructive lovers at the center of the Gothic romance. Production is scheduled for 2025 in the United Kingdom.
Fennell revealed the project last July on social media and secured Robbie and Elordi for the lead roles. Robbie previously worked with Fennell on the hit films “Promising Young Woman” and “Saltburn,” earning her an Oscar for the former. Out on the wily, windy moors... Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights is starting to take shape. Having announced back in July that her follow-up to last year's spicy satire Saltburn will be a fresh take on Emily Brontë's literary classic, everybody's favourite British provoc-auteur has it seems found her Cathy and Heathcliff — and found them down under, no less. Per Deadline's reporting, Aussie stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to take on the roles of the doomed lovers in Fennell's upcoming film, which is currently in pre-production and eyeing a 2025 UK shoot.
For Elordi, who'll be following in Tom Hardy, James Howson, and Ralph Fiennes' footsteps to bring Brontë's Byronic hero to life here, Wuthering Heights will be a quick reunion with his Saltburn director. And given the themes of that similarly Gothic tale — passion, revenge, obsession, death — and Elordi's tragic part to play within it,...

When we were in the housing development, it had a kind of rigid quality to it because we wanted it to feel confining. Director Guillermo del Toro has been spending this year working on one of his dream projects, an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale Frankenstein that is set up at the Netflix streaming service. Frankenstein is believed to have started filming on February 12th – and even though the production was only expected to last about five months, wrapping up on July 5th, somehow it’s still going! We had heard that filming would take place in Ontario, Canada, and possibly in London, England, but cameras are currently rolling in Edinburgh, Scotland, parts of which have been made to look like Victorian England. Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar has become one of the most beloved auteurs in international cinema with his unique brand of delicious melodramas. His latest film, The Room Next Door, is his first feature in English (following his short Strange Way of Life). Starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, Almodóvar’s film has a ton of very strong elements, and while they don’t all come together as well as one would hope, his latest work is still engaging and compelling.
The Room Next Door Review
Based on the novel What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez, The Room Next Door follows two longtime friends who, after having drifted apart, are drawn back together when one of them receives a terminal diagnosis and decides to end their own life. Throughout their final days together, they reminisce about the past and their relationships, trying to make amends with each other and themselves.

Australian filmmaker Michael Gracey’s The Greatest Showman earned much love from audiences when it debuted seven years ago, and his return might just be one of the most ambitious movie musicals in years. Better Man swings for the fences, for better or worse, and while its intentions are noble, its execution is mixed at best.
Better Man Review
Better Man is a musical telling the story of British musician Robbie Williams, following him from his days in the boy band Take That to later branching out into a successful solo career in the late ‘90s. Although Williams is not as notable as some other British musicians who have recently gotten this treatment, like Freddie Mercury and Elton John, his story (at least as it is told here) follows pretty much the same beats.
The ensemble features solid performances from actors like Damon Herriman, Steve Pemberton, Kate Mulvany, and Karina Banno.

Critics Don’t Care about the Whopping Amount of Time Netflix Took to Greenlight Joey King’s ‘Uglies’
The highly anticipated Netflix movie, Uglies, based on Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 novel, has left fans and critics underwhelmed. Despite being Joey King’s passion project, which she pitched to Netflix for years, the film’s execution failed to deliver.
Critics and reviewers weren’t so impressed with the unengaging plot, ranking this movie abysmally at the bottom. The actress expressed her love for the books, stating she had been pitching the movie to the streaming platform for years. Unfortunately, this toil of several years failed to reflect on screen and the film’s review took a nosedive.

Directed by McG, Uglies stars Joey King as Tally Youngblood in a dystopian world. Based on the book of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, the film was very much a passion project for the young actress.

Paul Schrader may think that Glen Powell is the next Paul Newman, but the “Oh, Canada” filmmaker is making it clear that Jacob Elordi could follow in Richard Gere’s filmic footsteps.
Schrader cast Elordi as the younger version of Gere’s lead character in “Oh, Canada,” which premiered in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and went on to screen at TIFF.
However, Schrader is now suggesting that Elordi might have even beat out Gere for “American Gigolo” if they had been contemporaries.
“I saw his performance on Zoom and, if this was 40 years ago, this is the guy I would have cast for ‘American Gigolo,'” Schrader told The Hollywood Reporter of Elordi’s audition for “Oh, Canada.”
“American Gigolo” was led by Gere and released in 1980. The film later received a short-lived TV adaptation with Jon Bernthal starring.

In recent years, we have seen a revitalization in the viability of adaptations of adult fiction books. Where the Crawdads Sing was huge in 2022, and just this year, It Ends With Us has become one of the year’s biggest successes. On Swift Horses seems poised to continue that trend, starring some of the buzziest actors working in Hollywood today in a compelling, unexpectedly nuanced romantic drama.
On Swift Horses Review
Based on the popular novel by Shannon Pufahl, On Swift Horses follows a small-town waitress (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her husband’s brother (Jacob Elordi) as they find excitement and unexpected love in the worlds of gambling. As the movie begins, it seems likely to be a relatively standard love triangle melodrama, but it quickly shows itself to have much deeper nuance.
Unfortunately, it would not be possible to discuss the themes the film explores without spoiling its “twist.” Although...

Oh, Canada director Paul Schrader didn’t think long before deciding to reunite with Richard Gere, 44 years after they made American Gigolo together, for his latest movie about a dying draft dodger and doc maker looking to set the record on his life straight in one final interview.
In Schrader’s latest movie, which is having a North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Gere plays Leonard Fife, an American who fled to Montreal to avoid the Vietnam War and eventually became celebrated as a documentary director.
But now facing terminal cancer, Fife rises from his deathbed and looks into a movie camera himself to recall key moments in his life and its many failings and lies. “Any number of actors could knock this out of the park. It’s a great role,” Schrader told The Hollywood Reporter about his movie adaptation of Russell Banks’ 2021 novel Foregone.

Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro is in the UK shooting his long-awaited Frankenstein movie. He's assembled an incredible cast which includes Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster, Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, with Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Lars Mikkelsen, Charles Dance, and Ralph Ineson among others.
The project, which is expected to be a Netflix exclusive, originally starred The Amazing Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield as the monster before the actor was forced to pull out due to scheduling conflicts caused by last year's Hollywood strikes.
Now, though, we have a first look at Isaac on set as Isaac's Victor; as expected, this is indeed a period piece and will be presented in del Toro's own unique style. Plot details for the movie have not been revealed, though we know the filmmaker penned the screenplay alongside J. Miles Dale, who served as a producer on del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities for Netflix.

More than a decade has gone by since the Twilight Saga ran its course on the big screen, with five movies telling the story of the four books in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. So, of course, it’s time for a franchise revival! While there are some side stories and reimaginings that could still be brought to the screen in live action, that’s not the way things are going right now. Earlier this year, we heard that Lionsgate was developing a Twilight animated series, and now that series is set up at the Netflix streaming service! Netflix also revealed that this animated series is an adaptation of the Midnight Sun novel.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, September 9. His adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey as the two showcase just how ruinous an addictive, life-altering love can be.
In the film, there’s a graphic sex scene involving Craig and Starkey, where the camera starts on them undressing, then pivots out the window. In “Call Me By Your Name,” Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer begin having sex, only for the camera to gear toward the window and cut to another scene. However, with “Queer,” instead of cutting to another scene, it cuts to Craig and Starkey going at it harder than any sex scene Guadagnino has portrayed.
When we asked Guadagnino if the “Queer” scene was rebuking criticisms of the “Call Me By Your Name” sex scenes, at the TIFF premiere, he told us,...

It’s been some time since we’ve had such a ridiculously attractive lineup of buzzworthy young actors as the quartet starring in Daniel Minahan’s On Swift Horses. Daisy Edgar-Jones, the tremendously talented star of Twisters and Normal People, is Muriel, a young woman in 1950s Kansas. Her soon-to-be husband, Lee, is played by Will Poulter, who has shined in everything from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to Kathryn Bigelow’s underrated Detroit. Returning from Korea––and making his introduction to Muriel shirtless, reclining on a car––is Lee’s brother, Julius. Yes, friends: the devil-may-care Julius is played by Jacob Elordi. I have not even gotten to the characters played by Babylon’s Diego Calva and Sasha Calle, a.k.a., the best thing about The Flash.
It’s somehow fitting that the film featuring this group is a soapy slice of ’50s melodrama, one ultimately centered...

Toronto – Queer characters hiding their true selves in the 1950s and early 1960s America is becoming something of its own subgenre. There is already Todd Haynes’ acclaimed melodrama “Carol,” Tom Ford’s “A Single Man,” Bill Condon’s “Gods and Monsters,” and a whole storyline in Stephen Daldry’s “The Hours.” All four of those films also have something in common, they are revered contemporary classics. It gives us no pleasure to report that Daniel Minahan’s “On Swift Horses,” an adaptation of Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel, won’t join those particular films in critical or audience acclaim.

After directing episodes for “Six Feet Under,” “Game of Thrones,” and, most recently, “Fellow Travelers,” Daniel Minahan returns to direct his first feature film in over 20 years. “On Swift Horses” stars a powerhouse cast that includes Jacob Elordi, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Diego Calva, Will Poulter and Sasha Calle. The film is based on the queer novel by Shannon Pufahl, and centers on newlyweds Muriel and Lee who are beginning a new life when he returns from the Korean War.
The chemistry among all the characters has been teased as palpable and infectious. While most of the promotional first look images thus far have teased both Edgar-Jones’ and Elordi’s characters together, she says that they don’t have a ton of scenes together and that building chemistry with him “was not too difficult.”
“It was really important that in those scenes that you felt that [chemistry],” she told IndieWire at the film’s premiere at TIFF.

Rolling into cinemas is Daniel Minahan’s On Swift Roads, a heartstring-tugging ride back to 1950s America where not everything is as simple as the surface suggests. Helming his first big screen feature since 2001, Minahan adapts Shannon Pufahl’s novel to peer beneath the hoods of seemingly straightforward postwar lives. As the director pilots this tour through repressive eras past, a standout cast hit all the right emotional notes.
We’re introduced to Muriel, dutifully playing the part of small town wife, and Julius, a gambler drifting wherever the wind blows. But cracks soon emerge in their façades. Muriel finds herself drawn elsewhere despite vowing before God and country, while Julius connects with like-minded souls at the fringes. By Sunday morning US acquisitions activity at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was starting to grind through the gears.

The Toronto International Film Festival hosted the world premieres of two new films starring breakout “Euphoria” actors Jacob Elordi and Sydney Sweeney. Elordi stars in the LGBTQ drama “On Swift Horses” about a 1950s love triangle. Sweeney takes the lead role in the survival thriller “Eden” directed by renowned filmmaker Ron Howard.
“On Swift Horses” tells the story of newlyweds Muriel and Lee, and Lee’s younger brother Julius. The story takes an unexpected turn when Julius begins a romantic relationship with a casino worker named Henry while visiting Las Vegas. Director Dan Minahan gave actors Elordi and Diego Calva, who plays Henry, freedom to develop their on-screen chemistry. Calva said they spent a week intensely preparing in a motel room. Elordi embraced the challenge of playing the complex Julius. He studied Paul Newman films to inspire his portrayal and enjoyed exploring life on the road as a cowboy character.

On Swift Horses begins by showing us two images: sex and a deck of cards.
Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is making love to Lee (Will Poulter), a soldier on leave from Korea. Meanwhile, Lee’s brother Julius (Jacob Elordi) has already been discharged from the war and is on his way to meet them both in Kansas, with only his bag and those cards. It’s almost Christmas and Lee wants Muriel to marry him, but she still hasn’t given her answer. Even so, the mood between them is light and fun. When Julius arrives, for a moment, they are one big happy family in Muriel’s cozy, secluded home, which she inherited from her mother. Spacious, lived-in and lovingly decorated for the holidays, it’s the exact kind of house one could imagine raising a family in. But Lee has dreams of California, and he wants Muriel and Julius...
